Terraria

We destroyed three Shadow Orbs last night. The Eater of Worlds spawned. We panicked. We used our Mirrior-hearth thing and GTFO'd.

A meteorite landed, but it is all the way over in the ocean. Quite inconvenient.

Got nothing of note last night really, besides the Musket.

I'm having trouble with monsters showing in one spot, and then as soon as I hit them, they move to a different spot (seemingly where they entered my FoV). It makes killing the two bosses we've encountered so far a breeze, but it is rather agitating. Anyone know of a fix to this?

Also, we're going to kill Skeletron this week. What is after that? I realize that I can go into the dungeon, but what is the purpose of getting better loot if there are no more bosses to kill?

It sounds like somekind of server lag but if you are hosting I doubt it would be on your side

Generally once you get a demonite pick and stronger armor it's dungeon/jungle and after the dungeon you can go to island and hell because you'll need keys for the chests there(dungeon loot). The hellstone mining became more challenging in 1.06 because now it drops magma when you mine it so getting obsidian skin potions is practically a requirement because it's much easier to mine hellstone while having the ability to ignore magma.

You should start a fireblossom and waterleaf farm (they need to submerge them with the correct liquid to get seeds). Getting obsidian isn't too bad - you can either tunnel water into magma making a "natural" generator. The other common way to get obsidian is to create an artificial generator which exploit some of the game mechanics to clone water and magma. You'll also need obsidian for hellstone bars but the recipe isn't as bad as it used to be .I think it used to be 6 hellstone + 2 obsidian and now it's 4+1 (in my first two games I had to mine over 1000 hellstone to get all the items I wanted).

The hellstone sword is pretty nice(big ,damaging and a ton of light when swang) and the armor is the highest protection available and it got melee bonuses. The bow is also the best in the game but I'm currently using the "best" pistol in the game which is more continent.

I'm still having a blast with this game.

I'll have a fresh IGWJD server up and running at Penguincon over the weekend. I'll post the info once I get my PC up and running at the hotel on Thursday. Would be cool to get 8 peeps together and roam around the world.

Seriously! Lawk ignores them as well, I can not. (Yet somehow his bags are always full and mine are not)

So I never made a 1.06 world. When the patch dropped I was on my first playthrough and was nearly at the end of my world exploration. So, with this update on 1.1, the visual style has gotten me interested. I just wish they'd put it out now.

Looks like I will be back in. With the glow it reminds me of Centipede.

Purty.

I dunno, though, I put SO much time into the pre-1.06 version of this game that I think I might be better off waiting a year or so and jumping back in when they're a few more patches in and everything is totally new to me.

With all the new items we've seen, I'm thinking 1.1 will make it feel totally new.

8 ppl? It got extended? Things have changed a lot since i played (1.0..3?)

Oh my, this looks awesome! Actual backgrounds! Mountains!

I think I will continue my tradition of letting the game rest between major releases and starting over from scratch.

Woot! New Screenshots featuring new Mechanics/Weapons utilizing Gel!

The aim for the 1.1 update is December 1st.
They have also released the Terraria Soundtrack featuring 5 new songs from the upcoming update:

Oh my god... is he using a flamethrower on Unicorns?? This game just go so much more awesome.

I don't think I'm going to touch this until that patch though, and start fresh.

Same here. I'm sure 21 days of Skyrim will be enough, right?

RIGHT?

Yeah, if you don't sleep.

Game's not finished until I can bed the Dryad. Or the nurse. Maybe both at once?

Go back to Dragon Age!

Looks like there's a Terraria-style game out for iOS called Junk Jack.

From the looks of it 1.1 is gonna be awesome! I'm not sure how many check in with the dev blog, but much will change come dec 1st. Looking ahead, I believe I will have that day off and will be willing to host a fresh map running hardmode on that day but only for brand new characters. Look for my Steam announcement on the 1st if interested.

Here is a video about the upcoming 1.1 update:

EDIT: And here is the official 1.1 trailer:

So, after reading the tips in pcgamer, my son decided to no be creeped out by the zombies. It's his new favorite game.

Is there a good guide for 2 players for getting set up in a fresh world, perhaps taking you up to some armor and better-than-wood weapons?

I played this game some upon release, thought "neat", then shelved it. But I am extremely impressed with the 1.1 trailer video. Really, that's just damn impressive how far the game has come since I last saw it. They've put a ton of work into it. I'll certainly be breaking it out again next Thursday.

I've started from scratch a few times .You don't necessarily need to use the wiki - the guide gives you all the recipes if you show him one of the ingredients. The tricky part is making certain craft stations. You have to put a bottle on a table for to make potions and to make certain items you need a chair by the crafting bench. There is a new station ,saw mill( I think) which is required for a few items and you have to use a loom for certain things.

First thing you should do is chop a lot of wood. Then you should make a wooden sword (better than short sword if you ask me), and a hammer. You should then start building a house with decent sized rooms so NPCs would have a place to stay (check the wiki for requirements) . A wood bow is also a good starting weapon . For armor use "don't get hit armor" ;). You should also get sand for glass and bottles to make potions (health initially). At a later stage , when you get seeds from blooming flowers you can start a garden using clay pots in order to get a good supply of utility potions.

It's generally better to go down because the content underground is not too difficult (except for the very bottom ). If you follow natural caves down you usually find chests along the way. It's generally better to use treasure finding potions (this is why a garden is useful). The beginning has a whole lot of ore mining and collecting resources (including chests using a hammer) . You should use copper for armor (not too useful for anything else) and silver and up for weapons/tools. Gold pick is a great upgrade and gold sword is very good while a silver sword can be upgraded to something else. once you get more or you can upgrade to better armor (takes 65~ bars to make while weapons and tools are cheaper).

You can look at gameplay videos on Youtube but it's not really necessary. Just go ahead and play . softcore characters have very small consequence for death (half of your money drops) so you can make a ton of mistakes and lose very little ( especially if you put money in a piggy-bank/chest).

I recommend starting from scratch every time. Having no grappling hook and a copper pick makes for a totally different game than having gold armour and a vine whip.

However, you should go ahead and give your new characters a molten hamaxe. I never liked how long it took to bust down walls when I was reconfiguring my house.

I don't have any of that stuff. Never gotten past the first crappy wood "home" as a zombie shelter. I've made a forge-oven thingy and we have a workbench and anvil.
We've got bows and wood swords, hammers, axes.

That's about it.

Actually, now we have a 3-story house. Mostly just because, not that we know how to lure NPCs or anything. Just building more tiny floors.

All you gotta do is dig. All sorts of interesting stuff down there. Oh and don't throw away your silver and gold armour, you will need them later.

We made a new house, bigger, and stone. While we were off exploring, a merchant showed up. We need more spider silk. Boy wants to make a bed.

So copper broadswords, merchant, 2 houses, anvil, loom, 2 forges, 2 workbenches, and no clues.

But we are having fun playing together, father & son.
Winging it.
Just like parenthood.

As you dig farther down you will get higher and higher quality metals.

As you go farther west and east you will see new biomes that have different types of resources. Show them all to your guide to see what you can do.

For sand and silk, that can also be found underground in different places.

FYI the new patch should be dropping around Noon EST. I might start up a server again this evening for new characters.

There are now three types of traps that are generated underground. Watch your step!

Placing objects on grass will now destroy the grass.
The crafting menu now scales to fit the size of the screen.

Added a new mechanical system! Holding a mechanical item will display the wire grid to create interesting new devices.
