Crazy, 2D, side-scrolling Minecraft-type game with multiplayer: Terraria.
Grab your tools and go! You can do many things in Terraria: make weapons and fight off a variety of enemies in numerous biomes, dig deep underground to find accessories, money, and other useful things, gather wood, stone, ores, and other resources to create everything you need to make the world your own and defend it. Build a house, a fort, even a castle, and people will move in to live there and perhaps even sell you different wares to assist you on your journey. But beware, there are even more challenges awaiting you... Are you up to the task?
Available on Steam as of today. Edit: $10 or a 4-pack for $30.

There's a Let's Play of this on youtube that the developers did. This looks really fun.
For some reason, this appeals to me a lot more than Minecraft did. Maybe because there's more of a "game" in it? Maybe because the 2D art is easier on the eyes? I'm looking forward to seeing your impressions.
I have to admit, I am intrigued. It looks like it might be interesting and fun, but I do have my reservations.
Here's the first episode of the Let's Play:
Not sure what you can do with coins yet.
According to the LP, if you have a second room in your house with a table and chair, a merchant will spawn when you have enough money.
I like it so far (about a half hour in).
It definitely feels like you are more focused on exploring and fighting than Minecraft.
Which I like. I haven't played the mp yet, but I can see where you're going to have to stay in groups in order to get anything done (which is a little different than Minecraft's mp where basically it's more "see what I just built!" or "lets build this!". Nothing wrong with that, but I've been waiting for Minecraft to up the difficulty so it's a pleasant change).
It doesn't feel like a 2d Minecraft clone, but more like it's own thing.
Oh and if you watched the video you know that you can build grappling hooks...which is cool.
Here is a list of things that aren't working the way they want yet:

The biggest of which is
Multiplayer Hosting
Hosting a server in the release build will not use steams built in server system, and requires you to port forward and use IP addresses to connect. You CAN start two clients of Terraria at once on a single PC from steam and use one of those to launch your server and the other to launch a client. However, it is not possible to use ONE steam account to launch a server on one PC and a client on another PC at this time, as steam will think two users are using the same account at two separate locations, which is not allowed. Also, until the stand alone servers are usable, the limit of 8 players per server will remain intact.
What you can Expect : We will be creating a stand alone server launcher within the next few weeks. And we will be integrating steams Server lists and removing the cap of 8 players per server.

Ok, 41 minutes in, here's what I've found (in no particular order):
...* I can consistently crash the game by going into full screen mode (Win 7 64-bit).
...* You can customize the look (colour) of your character, including hair, eyes, and clothes. However, I don't think you can change skin colour (might have missed it).
I picked this up also, to fix the fullscreen mode you have to press Alt+Enter (the devs said they are working on a real fix) but this worked for me.
And yes, you can change you skin color.
Just picked this up as part of a four-pack with some friends. Looking forward to getting some time in on it.
Picked it up and I'm having trouble changing any settings. Anytime I do and back out of the menu it crashes.
Also why does it do a first time set up every time you run it?
....WIERD
Its like Minecraft, Castlevania and Soldat had a baby.
Did you guys see it's the top seller and most played game on Steam atm? Gotta love indie instant hits!
I just bought it but nursing my baby boy so I'll play later.
anyone wanna trade this for Half-Life 2?
I got an extra copy of HL2 I wish to trade for this
it is so Minecraftttt

Good luck with that. I haven't been able to give away my copy of HL2 ever since I got an extra one from the Orange Box.
I almost got a Tropico Gold in exchange for Half-Life 2
but the person disappeared and stopped replying me before we could even add each other on Steam :/
The progression and greater emphasis on fighting is pulling me in to this game in a way that Minecraft was never able to.

I would tip my hat at you if you could even find someone willing to take HL2 for free.
I think the block size is just a little too small in relation to the character sprites- I often find myself getting stuck on areas I visually should be able to fit through, but can't due to just a few pixels. It makes mining more of a chore than it needs to be.
Ohhh gawd this game is addicting! I played till 3:30 this morning; made waking up for work at 7:30 a chore to say the least.
What counts as the "endgame" for singleplayer? Building stuff is fun but I can't see it keeping me interested for long.

Well I don't know for sure, but I do know there are several boss monsters you can summon, lots of different biomes, like underground jungles and floating islands, and NPCs that you can recruit as you progress.
The Terraria wiki can give you a feel for how much content it has.

I'm enjoying the tinkering and exploring in this so far, but it's a strange style for a sandbox. All this combat sure keeps me busy!
Tagging for future reference. Sounds very intriguing and would like to pick it up on the cheap one day.
This game is nuts. Forget all the "2D Minecraft" comparisons. It isn't about building stuff, it's about scavenging parts to construct better gear, so you can explore further and find even better stuff, and so forth. And I'm not talking just the usual progression of wood, to stone, to metal. That does exist in the early game, but once you get through the basic materials you're just getting started. You start at sword-and-bow technology and progress to all kinds of crazy stuff. There are unique items scattered throughout the world in chests, and finding one is very exciting, given that there appears to be no way to figure out where the chests are in the vast underground caves (maybe there's a chest seeking item you can find. Who knows?).
It's difficult to put into words the scale of this game. There are distinct areas of the map that feature different enemies and goodies, both on the surface and underground, and every time you think that you've seen all the different biomes, you run into a new one. I brought up the wiki to verify something and had to close it lest I learn too much and spoil the discovery, but even clicking through a couple of pages I could see that I'm nowhere near anything resembling end-game content after 8 hours of play.
Can't wait to try the multiplayer. I hope these guys make a boatload of cash.

Erik how did you take that 'screenshot' (for lack of a better word) of that map?
Wow, ok... that map is probably the thing that'll get me to buy this, that just looks so... explorable.
Edit: You know, this makes me think, I believe we'll be praising Minecraft 10 years down the track, not because it's an awesome game (not saying it isn't), but because it launched the unnamed Minecraft-clone genre and all the interesting games within it. I think it'll be like Doom in that respect.

No I stole it from someone on the Steam forums. There are a few people who have made screenshots of their maps, but I am not sure how it it done.
