The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Catch-All

It was a nice feeling when it came up and auto detected ultra high settings. Breath taking the views are. Oh and those early complaints about controls? They must have been on crack. First you're able to change them to what you want and everything is real fluid.

Should be playing after work, finally got my amazon shipping email after 1am!

Maybe this is a dumb question, but does anyone know how to smelt iron into steel? First thing I did after hitting the first town was hit the nearby mine, and I took the Craft Steel perk from Smithing as my level 2 perk. Don't see anywhere at the blacksmith's to make steel ingots, though.

Figuring out how to [F] favorite something and then quickly switch to is using the [Q] button solved 50% of my complaints about the menu. And when you actually press a button it snaps and zips around like butter.

The rest will need work, and yes it's unbelievable that they didn't put more thought into it. But the rest of the experience just overwhelms it and turns it into a niggle.

I definitely need to tweak settings manually, because something about the game fatigues my eyes and it's not just the awesome vistas. Maybe I just need to push the monitor back a few inches.

I ran into the same problem. I had all these iron and steel ore pieces but couldn't turn them into ingots. I looked up online and apparently you have to use an smelter to change the ore into ingots. Apparently the first place you'll find one is the first big city you get to. I'm not sure what city that is, but that is what the online forum said.

Do any of you know how torturous it is to leave my computer at home, decrypting the files on Steam, and then to have to come into work for a full day, reading the fun that ya'll are having? Please at least tell me that the game is crappy and that I'm not missing anything special. At least that way I can get through my day with my sanity intact.

I'm in the same boat. I was pre-loading last night after my wife surprised me and bought this for me for my birthday (it is so nice to have a partner who supports my hobby I <3 you wifey) and I was debating what to do. I'm sitting there at 9:00pm contemplating whether to stare at my computer screen for 3 hours and then stay up all night playing Skyrim when I realized that I am old and need to delay gratification sometimes.

I was so hyped about the game I couldn't really concentrate on anything else so I just went to bed a 9:00pm so I would get a sh*t-ton of sleep to be fuly refreshed for some marathon Skyrim action.

I do have family stuff to do this weekend but I'm definitely looking forward to dipping my toes into the game.

I'm hoping my rig can max it out. I have a gtx 470 OC'd, a decent quad core, 8gb RAM, and a WD 1Tb HD. I'll be running in 1680-1050 so hopefully with some tweaking (vsync off and possibly lower the AA a bit) I'll be able to max it. I can't wait to fiddle with setting as I stare off into the vast wilderness.

Pro tip that wasn't quite explained. After you bring up the "favourites" menu hit a number to assign a hotkey to that particular weapon/magic/jedi skill. This made the UI much less cumbersome for me.

As well the mouse acceleration is kinda garbage and makes the mouse feel laggy. You can turn it off by changing bMouseAcceleration=1 to bMouseAcceleration=0 in the SkyrimPrefs.ini file found in \Users[Username]\My Documents\My Games\Skyrim

Well this should solve most complaints then.

Why oh why can't companies support wide screen out of the box? Is it too much to ask for them to adjust the menus etc?

Tagged.

Detected High for me (GTX 460), but then put AA at 8x. Don't think so. Dropping that down to 4x and bumping other things up to Ultra sounds like a better idea.

Have played for 5 mins, and seems like a 360 controller on the PC is the way to go at the moment. Anyone agree/disagree?

Agreed. Unfortunately.

If anyone is getting queasy it is really easy to set your FOV. Just open up the console type FOV and the number you want. I am using 90 at this time on a 1980x1080 display.

same fatigue here. Like mouse look is a tad jittery. Something. Looking around messes with my eyes and equilibrium a bit.

Performance seems good, though I should measure FPS.
Auto detect set me to High.
Core i3 530 (NOT Sandybridge)
4g RAM
Sapphire 5770 1gig

Looks great, runs good, just feel mildly disoriented when panning view.

Edit: already tried fov at 95, 90, 85.

Current status as of 10:45 on 11/11/11. I'd say someone has a hit.

Most COD players aren't on PC but that is comforting to see.

I really want to play this so bad but I just have no time to play BF3 and this... Christmas vacation get here soon.

What's shocking (to me) is that the third-highest concurrent players is Football Manager 2012. I mean, I know I enjoy it, but ErikTheRed was not wrong when he said "Oh, so it's like Dwarf Fortress for soccer".

Also: awake and heading back in.

Playing on Xbox. Is anyone else having this issue?

The menus often hang for a moment and are completely unresponsive. Most notably the Favorites
menu amd the Level Up menu will freeze, sometimes as long as 10 seconds, or so. I installed the game to cut down on the load times go in and out of buildings and don't know if this is the problem. I know Halo 3 had issues like this when you installed it. I'll try uninstalling and see what happens, but just wondering if I'm a unique case, here.

One of my co-workers told me he killed the first chicken he saw in the game.

Spoiler:

The townfolk proceeded to mob him.

There is a way to clear xbox game's cache, I would do that first. I don't have a link handy but will try to find one.

The reason Halo 3 had those issues was b/c the game was streaming from the disc to the hard drive ahead of time while you were actively playing. It was clever programing that cut down on load times from the disc. Unfortunately it was right before Microsoft offered installs. When it was installed on the hard drive it essentially would stream from the disc image on the hard drive to another part of the hard drive which would cause slowdowns for obvious reasons. I would find it hard to believe that Skyrim would use the same technique knowing that disc installs exist and not having in issue with installs on previous games.

Tagging.

I wish I had known this was controller-enabled, then I probably would have just gone straight for the PC copy rather than 360 now and leaning to the possibility of double-dipping later. My RSI is lightening up and I just don't want to spend a lot of time on M&K right now. Oh well, achievements!

I have no idea why I went to the midnight release party last night rather than just buying on Steam. GameSpot had an exclusive map but otherwise it was not worth waiting in the cold for 30 minutes to get the game.

Or maybe Steam has just made me that lazy.

nipping to local gamestation after work; plenty in stock and same price as amazon

edit: in uk so work finishes in 6 minutes

I did EXACTLY the same thing.

Game Stop was PACKED last night. Got the collector's edition against my better judgement, but the art book is pimp and I actually like the wall the dragon is standing on, from a distance anyway. Media blackout worked for me with this game because EVERYTHING is amazing to me. This game makes Oblivion look like an NES game.

Hmm...I guess as a ESDF user I'm screwed when it comes to adding things to my favorite list while in the menu. Tried all the keys and nothing works while I have F bound to Strafe Right.

This reminds me of a similar problem in Dead Island where picking up weapons was bound to F even if you keybind it to something else in the menu.

Maybe I need to look through the Skyrim Data files to see if I can find where it's hardcoded. Pity the Steam forums are down, they might be helpful right now.

My copy is out for delivery, so I'm tagging to follow the thread.

I keep changing my mind about what sort of character to use first. Now I'm thinking a hefty 2H axe wielding valkyrie sort, specializing in 2H, Heavy Armor, Smithing and Alchemy/Speech. I think she was thrown in jail for disturbing the peace when somebody got a little too friendly in the bar.

I was playing Battlefield 3 last night and I saw a couple of Goodjers on my friends list playing the game. I got so excited that the game shipped a day early that I ran outside in the middle of the night looking for the UPS package.

Sadly, it was not there.

When I went home at lunch I rolled up a snazzy Redguard. The game plays well with an Xbox controller attached to my living room PC setup. One nice thing about 'consolization' is that my PC games look dandy on my HDTV.

I won't get to do any playing until much later this evening, and then maybe not at all on Saturday, but I am excited to see if this is an Elder Scrolls I can finally get deep into.

I think something's not quite right with the lighting for me. There's too much bloom on things, I think.

Also, I'm glad this plays well with a controller as my shoulder is still giving me issues and using a controller makes it so I can play, yay!

Thanks Goo!
