The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Mod Thread

Thanks for affirming the correctness of my decision. Oh man, this is gonna be a deep rabbit hole. Downloading everything from that list now. I've got 2 4GB 680s, so this is going to be interesting. I will post some screenshots if I get some good results.

Edit: The FAQ at Dead End Thrills is extremely interesting. He is using 2 670s which isn't ridiculous. He does this 2160p render and downscale to 1080p thing. I won't be able to do that.

Holy crap! I just started looking through the community section on the Dead End Thrills website. This is going to be a terribly deep rabbit hole. If I can get this stuff figured out, I may have to start a game photography thread on GWJ.

This is supersampling, and yes you can.

Eeek! This is a terribly awesome rabbit hole.

Well, I installed all of the mods on the most recent list of Dead End Thrills, and it runs great at 1920x1080. I'm not sure if I have any compatibility issues. The XCE - Xenius Characer Enhancement mod has you disable the default high res texture pack and then go into the skyrim.ini file and add the .esb files. So, I think that's working.

I started a new character, though, and the game just randomly crashes to desktop right after the first dragon shows up (right after you have created your character and are about to get your top chopped).

I loaded up an old save, and that seems to be running okay. I haven't put a serious amount of time into it, though.

So I installed a bunch of graphical mods from Steam today Enhanced Cities, Enhanced Trees, something for the weather, and something for the night sky. I think the weather one made the night time much darker and I have to say I really like what it does to the ambiance of the game. It was a rainy night with heavy cloud cover when I was riding to Morthal from Whiterun, in the mountains an Ancient Dragon attacked me, I haven't been that tense in this game for a long time. Stuck out in the open with an Ancient dragon when I can't see two feet in front of me due to the darkness.

The next night it was a clear night and it was slightly easier to see, then when the borealis appeared everything had this green tint. It was awesome.

I booted up Skyrim today before work, figuring I'll jump back in and pick up with whatever character I had going. Title screen pops up, game crashes. I do this a few more times. No luck. I update every driver my computer has, verify the integrity of the game files, check for sound card issues, and finally realized it's probably one of my mods - one of my 80 mods. I de-activated them all, and wouldn't you know it, it loads to the main menu without a problem. Great. Now I get to go through each mod and figure out which one doesn't want to cooperate.

last one installed / updated? go from there

If you haven't added any since you last played, it might be a mod that's interfering with content from a newer patch, or possibly a bad load order.

Check as many of them as you can to make sure they're up to date too. Steam Workshop should do that automatically. If you got them from the Nexus, the Nexus Mod Manager will check them for you.

...and hope your problem isn't a bug introduced in the latest update to one of them?

I also did some updates to lighting the other day and was happy with the experience in dungeon being much darker. I now have to use either a torch or the candle light spell or I can see what's up ahead unless there is a really good light source. kinda cool actually.

Is the Skyrim HD 2K/4K available anymore? None of the downloads on Nexus work (I get a message saying the files don't exist). Fortunately I have version 1.1, but I'd like to update it since he has added a lot more areas.

Also, if I need to change the load order on graphical mods, do I need to delete and re-download them due to one overwriting part of another, or would deactivating and then reactivating them do the trick?

Has anyone tried any of the survival mods such as having to eat/drink, wear proper clothing, etc?

I've been thinking about rolling a new character using these mods and was wondering if these were well implemented or if you've tried any specific ones and have recommendations?

I'm always interested in these, but have never found one that seemed to be very robust. Hopefully someone else has!

I think it depends what you're looking for. There are a number of good mods, but they're still pretty general and are implemented in a world that lets you do things like swim in the ocean while heavily encumbered and wearing full plate armor. I carry a tent around for effect, but haven't gone so far as to install a mod that actually required its use.

Nice link. Thanks. I've looked at a bunch of mods such as Frostfall and I'm encouraged by the fact that a few mods seemingly play well together such as camping, cloaks, and cooking food.

I guess what I'm looking for is realistic weather that affects your character, having to wear appropriate clothing and stay warm, and having to eat. What I'm not sure of is how these mods implement notifying you of being too cold for instance. Guess I'll just dive in and check a bunch out.

I'll report back for anyone who is interested.

I run with this one

Imp's More Complex Needs

This one's a bit too hardcore for my personal play style, but more than ten-thousand downloaders have loved its changes, so don't take my word for it!

Imp's More Complex Needs integrates a complete nutrition system to Skyrim, requiring careful tracking of caloric intake (which is hard enough to manage in the real world), water, proteins, and other basic nutrients. The mod ships with both a 'complex' (twelve trackable elements) and 'basic' (five trackable elements) mode, hopefully making things a little less intrusive for players who don't aspire to be nutritional coaches.

Penalties will be incurred whenever one of the nutritional levels drops below a preset value, so keep careful track of your feeding routine. Thankfully, the mod includes a timescale adjuster, making it possible to prolong the effects of food or water and reducing the intrusiveness of the mod.

I Also use Frostfall

Frostfall's most notable updates are the inclusion of hypothermia, camping equipment (several other mods do this, too), cold water survival, and factors in several character-specific attributes to determine each of these components. Cold weather survival, for instance, will use worn clothing, the weather, time of day, encumbrance, shelter, and more to determine how long your Dovahkiin can fight the biting winds.

In spirit of ultimate immersion and realism, Frostfall adds craftable camping equipment for increased survivability in the event of an unexpected blizzard, torches will provide some level of heat, weathersense rings -- acting like mood rings -- will change color as the weather grows worse, camp fires provide warmth (now adding a reason for wood cutting), and cloaks from the Cloaks of Skyrim will also keep you warm.

I'm a masochist

I've had trouble with woodcutting so far. I'm carrying a woodcutter's axe, but the camping script I use doesn't seem to recognize it. I might have to try a different script.

I believe it's generally via text on the screen (top corner).

The one I used had a thin film of ice form on you.

OK, so I just got this on PC and have been building up my list of mods that I want. I've been using the Steam Workshop instead of nexus though as I feel it's easier to subscribe and unsubscribe to mods there. But I noticed that in order to get SKYUI working, I need the script extender... which launches the game.

My question is, if I use that to launch the game, will it still check my subscribed mods?

Seriously, just commit and use the Nexus mod manager. Far easier, and the workshop does a lot of weird and buggy things.

If I remember correctly SkyUI still works fine without the script extender except for the ability to search through your items.

The main problem with using SkyUI without SKSE having the warning text on every screen. I've never encountered a problem without it. The search box may not work but I've never tried to use it anyway.

No, it won't. It will skip the Skyrim launcher (which checks mods) and directly call tesv.exe instead.

I have two shortcuts for Skyrim. I renamed the main shortcut "Skyrim Launcher" which I fire up every once in a while to update/manage mods. Then I shut it down and run the Skyrim script extender shortcut to play the game. It seems kludgy, but I find that I don't need to check for mod updates all the time. Launching the game from the script extender shortcut is much faster.

Ok, thanks. That's what I figured. I grabbed SkyUI but haven't had a chance to play it yet as I was doing the good husband thing. I'll hopefully get some time tonight and stick with the method that you use.

Well I manually installed mods for F3 and F:New Vegas so it's not a real hard stretch to go to the mod manager, but I don't know, I just like that I can subscribe using the workshop and it just works. The only problem is the high quality map isn't on the workshop. Grrr. May have to install that one manually.

Prozac is right, BlackSabre. The Nexus really is superior for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that the problem of mod theft is practically nonexistent there.

Mod theft?

I don't really have a problem with the nexus. Like I said, I used it extensively for Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I'm just enjoying the simplicity of the workshop.

People on the Workshop uploading mods that are not their own and taking credit for them.
