The Playstation Vita Catch-All

I put about 150 hours into 7, not because I think it's better than any others, but because it was the only good PS1 game out at the time. When you're a high school sophomore, with more time on your hands than you know what to do with, that's kinda what happens.

This Mutant Blobs game sounds like something I should investigate. I'm half-way through Escape Plan, so might be wanting something soon.

Oh trust me, I put in a sad number of hours as well. I was in high school as well or so. How is escape plan? I loved mutant blobs.

C'mon iPhone, what's with the doubles?

I like Escape Plan. It's a puzzler along the lines of Cut The Rope, if you've played that. Your goal is simply to get to the exit alive, and you are scored on how many gestures you take to accomplish that. It's got a good art style and some clever black humor, and it's quick so it plays very well on commutes. I recommend it if you're a fan of puzzle games, and it'll have a lot of replay value if you enjoy trying to beat your own score.

Atlus just announced price reductions on a lot (if not all) of their PSP games to get you to purchase it for your Vita. Those waiting for p3p, now's the time!

Oddly, I can only find it on the ps3 store at the moment.

Yeah, the only game that shows up on my Vita PSN store is Persona 2 portable, and it's still $30 so it's not a great discount. P3P is definitely worth any price though, great game.

Here's the ad for anyone interested:

For games that don't show up on the Vita store, you should be able to buy them via PS3 or PC and transfer them over. I haven't heard of any Atlus games being incompatible.

Is there a good reason why Persona 2 is the most expensive of the lot? I remember hearing nothing but good things about Persona 3, but haven't heard much of anything about number two.

It's just the most recently released, I think.

FWIW I haven't been able to push very far into either Persona 3 or 4, and have nothing but good memories about 2 from way back on the PS1.

Is there any compelling reason to start at Persona 1, or can I jump in at 3? Does it definitely run on Vita?

Edit: Hmmm. The sale doesn't seem to extend to the EU store. Persona 3 shows on vita, albeit at £27.99. Persona 2 and 3 double pack is £39.99. Persona 2 on its own is £27.99. Number 1 is only £7.99.

There aren't any plot hooks or anything, the games are stand-alone experiences. Some share the same world, or imply such. I haven't played the remake, but unless they did some serious updating of the mechanics (they may have!) it would not have aged well.

Didn't see the honking great poster! It hadn't loaded when I skimmed down the page.

Personally, I would skip 1 and 2 completely. There's no real story connection, just some basic tropes and gameplay mechanics. 1 and 2 are pretty archaic by modern standards, even as remakes, pretty much nostalgia trips only.

I posted this in the JRPG thread but it might be relevant to you also:

It may be too late depending how invested you are in the UK store (Vita seems to make it impossible to store games from PSN stores in different regions on the same card) but you should switch to the US store if at all possible. US prices after currency conversion are typically much cheaper than any other region and you get access to all the good sales. I remember buying my first couple of games on the Australian store when I got a PS3 but then I compared the prices (30-40% more expensive), switched to the US store and never looked back.

Persona 1 seems like it might be an outlier at only 8 pounds. Also, considering how weak the pound and euro have been recently I'm not sure if the UK/European stores are quite as big a rip off as the Australian store.

This is true, with the sole exception that 2 was never released outside Japan before this. That's the main hook to P2 on PSP, if you're a persona fan then this is the only way to get a localized version.

Man, that is a ton of game at some seriously good prices. P3P for $20 is a steal, and Yggra Union is supposed to be a great game too. Damn you, Atlus! You're about to fill my memory card!

Definitely go straight to 3, if you're new to the series.

Yup! Just downloaded it via ps3 store and transferred it via the cable. Works fine!

Thanks for the advice guys.

I bought Persona 3 Portable. Unfortunately, I seem to have a problem actually getting it onto my Vita.

The only game currently installed is WipEout 2048, taking 1613 MB of the 3822 MB available on my 4 GB card. Tha should leave me with 2 GB. When I go to System Information, it tells me that I only have 1016 MB available. There are no other games or apps on the card, and the Application Data Management section in settings doesn't show anything either. There are no photos, videos, movies or anything else. All I can find is WipEout and the 4.5MB for Uncharted, which I have on a cartridge.

Any ideas as to where the missing gig might be?

I'll be grabbing P3P as well; though I'm going to take a little while longer, since I'm converting some Best Buy reward points into a PSN card.

Did you try formatting it after backing up the data? Could be some cruft in there from... something. Demos?

I was hoping to avoid formatting. I already lost my wipeout save data once moving it around. Ah well, no choice, I suppose!

Half of Persona 2 made it to the US PS1, Eternal Punishment I believe. Does the PSP remake include both halves?

No, the PSP version is only Innocent Sin, the first half of the game that was never released outside Japan. The second half, Eternal Punishment, was recently announced for PSP as a remake here in Japan so it will probably make its way over at some point.

I don't have a Vita yet but I'm wondering if there are a lot of system files that need to be stored on the card? Certainly the 360 HDD seems to have several gigabytes preallocated to system files.

spider_j wrote:

That's probably saved games and saved system prefs.

Escape Plan is done. Good times, though I expected it to be longer. I can see myself going back to get 3 stars on all the levels, but I'm not sure if I'll try the challenge of beating the game in fewer than 20 deaths combined between Lil and Laarg.

I think I'll finally try the Gravity Rush demo I downloaded, then either finish Maverick Hunter X or buy Person 3 and play it with the alternate protagonist.

I didn't realize gravity rush had a demo! Onto the store I go!

Well, it doesn't have a US demo. It has a demo for Hong Kong, and you can download it by restoring your Vita to a Hong Kong PSN account. Then once it's downloaded, you can restore your Vita back to your US PSN account, and the app will run just fine. That's what I did.

So on the recommendation of many, I picked up Mutant Blobs Attack the other day and have been playing it on my lunch hour. It is simply criminal that this game doesn't have a demo because holy crap is it awesome! Just oozes charm from every corner and the gameplay is super solid. Your character which has the rainbow eyebrow that's in the perpetual state of annoyance is so hilariously cute. Didn't know it was developed in Canada either. If you've got a Vita and have even the slightest like for platformers, get this.

Yeah. I was a huge booster of Kirby's Epic Yarn and Kirby Mass Attack last year. For my money, though, this is one of the best 2D platformers I've played in years. Wild.

Is anyone else looking at the upcoming releases and losing confidence in, for me at least, what felt like a promising purchase?

I see these big games on the horizon:
-Mortal Kombat, Early May
-Resistance: Burning Skies, Late May
-Gravity Rush, Mid June
-LittleBigPlanet, TBD 2012
-Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection, TBD 2012
-Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee HD, TBD 2012
-Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD, TBD 2012
-Street Fighter x Tekken, TBD 2012
-Super Monkey Ball, TBD 2012
-Zone of the Enders HD Collection, TBD 2012
-Phantasy Star Online 2, TBD 2013

Besides Gravity Rush, there's not much I can get that excited about. I want a good multiplayer game, but there doesn't seem to be one on the horizon besides PSO2. Even that though I'm skeptical about because it looks like it's failing to evolve.
