The Playstation Vita Catch-All

It's also very telling of just how bad the Vita is doing. Hopefully this can encourage sales.

I don't agree. I'm not saying the Vita is doing good, but Mortal Kombat being offered for free on PS+ is not an indication of the health of the system. Sony *just* launched PS+ for Vita, they're trying to get people to sign up for the service. In addition, Mortal Kombat has already been discounted twice, and been on sale at least 3 times, which are all calls made by Warner Bros. not Sony.

Sony has been pretty generous with Plus, giving out even their marquee games like LittleBigPlanet and Infamous 2. I think they've just realized that the stable income that comes from having people subscribed to PS Plus is better than the hope that year-old games will still have strong sales.

Do we have any idea how the Vita is doing? Seems like there's been a jump (speaking anecdotally) since the various sales this last couple of weeks.

It did really well in Japan recently, but we all know how insular their sales can be based on game releases.

I'll be very interested to see how much of a sales boost it got from the Black Friday deals. If it was big, I bet Sony will boast about it.

You should at least be able to find the game on the store again and download it that way. It should have a little red shopping bag buy it showing that you already purchased it.

Hum, I "bought" Wipeout and Jet Set Radio as free PS+ downloads but they don't appear in my "Download List" on the Vita store ... anybody knows what's up with that?

Usually games we get free with PS+ or from purchases will appear there in the order they were bought/downloaded

It pains me that CTR and the R-Type games still aren't on that list of supported PSone games.

Also, I had a bunch of PSP games sitting on my PS3 (left over from past shopping sprees for my PSP Go) but the only one that showed up in the transfer utility was the one that I downloaded onto my PS3 earlier that night (FFTactics). I know that at least some of them are in the list of "officially supported" PSP games for vita (P3P, Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman, etc). Any insights?

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthre... is the best list of compatibility I've found.

Ah, thanks a bunch. I guess this is the secret sauce that should have been up front:

If you download the games from the store on the PS3 and you DON'T install them so that they're still represented as bubbles, then you can transfer them on the PSVita.

I guess have to go re-download a bunch of games

And here's that bragging I was talking about. Half-million PS3s sold, and 160 thousand Vitas. That's not shabby at all.

Honestly? That's good for the PS3, but for the Vita, that's a death knell.

I think they will have to come down in price. I would have thought the package-in bundles would have given them a leg up, but I guess not.

Agreed.

PlayStation Vita sales, on the other hand, didn’t fare as well. Sony say they sold 160,000 PlayStation Vita systems during Black Friday week. The boost came from three aggressive $200 Vita bundles with either Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified, Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, or Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes included.

For comparison, the Nintendo 3DS sold 250,000 units during Black Friday week and the Nintendo DS sold 275,000 units during the same period. The 3DS was sold with a Super Mario 3D Land bundle for $170. Sony did not provide Black Friday sales figures for the PSP.

Nintendo sold 525 thousand devices. Getting outsold by Nintendo by 4-5 times has been pretty much a weekly occurrence. The Vita has struggled to outsell the PSP, actually.

That tells me that there's a price point that would move people. And it's probably even below $200. $150? I'd be curious to see how the Vita would do with a dramatic price cut.

It might move units at $200 or lower, but it's still being sold at a loss at it's current MSRP. I don't think Sony's in a financial position where they can sell millions of units at a huge loss.

If they make up that loss in PS+ subscriptions, the story will be very different. I think the big win out of that Siliconera article is not the PS3, it's PS+. 259% growth of PS+ subscriptions last week alone is huge. Even if a large portion of that is people getting the free year with their PS3, that could wind up being a lot of conversions to paying subscribers.

I'm not sure Sony would have released those numbers if they weren't kind of pleased.

I forget, how long has the 3DS been out and how long has the Vita been out? I know the 3DS has been out longer. How many 3DSes were sold last Black Friday?

We replaced our Vita when the cost was essentially $140, since the only reason my wife wanted one was to play ACIII.

Sony just announced the 3G Vita with a year of Plus, Unit 13, and 4 gig card for $299.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012/...

So in other words 7 free games and a memory card. For some reason I think people are going to complain about the price.

For a look at how the numbers have been going each week look here.

If Sony's plan is to compete with Nintendo, they already failed.

A more expensive bundle isn't going to move systems faster Sony. *facepalm*

If I'm reading it right the Vita had over 50% increase with the 3DS at 9%. That's probably what Sony really wants people to see.

I'll avoid addressing that so I don't look like a raging fanboy.

3DS has been out since early 2011. Vita released earlier this year.

I'm not 100% sure, but it looks like the 3DS sold 400K or so units during Black Friday week last year. This was the same week Super Mario 3D Land launched, which boosted sales considerably.

That was post price drop to right? What were the 3DS numbers before that.

That was roughly two months after the price drop. Sales were poor before then, but I don't know the exact numbers.

That doesn't really answer my question. From what I can tell by googling, Nintendo did not release 3DS sales figures for 2011's last black Friday. They just brought up the Wii and Skyward Sword Figures (over 500,000 each). All they said was that the sales of the 3DS rose 325% compared to the week of November 6th, whatever that means.

I don't know if all of these figures are North America only or what. So, Wikipedia says the 3DS was released March 27, 2011 and the Vita was released Feb. 22, 2012. So, an apples to apples sales figure comparison doesn't exactly work because the 3DS has had about a year's head start building up its brand. At least Sony sold enough Vitas to release some sales figures.

I don't really care all that much about all of this. I just don't think we need to say the sky is falling yet, though.

Edit: Threw in a link...

Too late.

The 3DS outsold Vita 615K to 141K, 421K to 89K, 373K to 59K, 269K to 58K, and 226K to 42K over the last five weeks. You have to be one hell of raging fanboy to think Sony likes these numbers. It especially bad when the DS has also outsold the Vita in four of those weeks. It's been neck and neck until last week, when the DS nearly 333K units to the Vita's 141K.

tuffalobuffalo wrote:

This. My main gripe is that people immediately jump to this being the end of the Vita, calling it the death knell (no, I'm not calling out Tanglebones here specifically, others have said the same thing earlier in the thread), and I just don't see it.

Yeah, this is not the super amazing first 9 months for the Vita that Sony had hoped for, but it's not the first time this has happened, both to Sony and others. The PS3 had an incredibly rocky start, as did the 3DS. If you want apples to apples, here it is:

3DS launch sales - 374,764
Vita launch sales - 321,407

Just because the system is not flying off shelves does not mean it's a failure.

Nintendo sold 891,302 3DS's last last year over the Black Friday week. They also sold 340K DS's. Sony chimed in with 189,577 PSP's. Seriously, Sony is playing in a different game, selling to a different market.

By and large, most folks stop playing handhelds once mom and dad stop forcing them to travel with them. Portables sell to young kids. Sony will go broke if they try to match Nintendo's sales but targeting more mature gamers. And from all accounts, Sony is going broke.

ahrezmendi wrote:

This is most certainly true. But I don't see a reasonable outlook in which Sony even approaches Nintendo's numbers. Can Sony be profitable will Nintendo outsells the vita by 3 to 4 times each week? That's the question.
