WoW 5.0 - Mists of Pandaria

Like others, the way dailies have infiltrated even further into the core aspect of the game has really put me off. They really do feel just like busywork chores. I've never been a raider, but I've enjoyed endgame dungeon running, knowing that in addition to drops I was gradually gathering points to spend on goodies. Now that those goodies are gated behinded mandated rep grinds, it just really leaves a sour taste in my mouth. This game is getting old, they should really be going the opposite direction, giving more freedom at endgame instead of this rigid structure. I know a lot of more casual players like myself are going to look at these rep grinds and just say, forget it, I've played this game for years and there are too many other options out there.

Also from my perspective, their insistence on telling a linear story with the questing is just a mistake. It enforces a linear progression on questing that becomes another repetitive chore when you want to level an alt. They need to be offering more choices, more freedom, not less. Imagine being able to level an alt and do whole different quest hubs or zones in different orders. What do you lose, a linear story that most players really don't give a crap about anyway, and you gain a whole lot of variety when leveling multiple characters.

I've been thinking this since BC

Yep, I expect my sub to go poof once my main hits 90. I have no interest in a second job.

I don't see the gear gate as really hampering progress. Between heroics, scenarios and crafting, I should be able to hit 460, which will get me into raids. Gear from that should be able to get me into better raids. My only holdup is my own sloth; I'm distracted by dailies because I want all those mounts.

I agree with you on linear progression, AC. It's fine for one toon. I've enjoyed the story so far, and thought the quests are generally clever and well done. But I've got two more toons I'd like to get to 90, and I'd like to be able to pick a path that my main hasn't already worn knee-high wagon ruts in.

Having to send those toons through the same set of dailies ... /shudder.

For those who have been interested and who haven't partaken yet, Blizzard has announced that on Black Friday, people will be able to purchase physical copies of Mists of Pandaria at selected retailers for a mere $20. (The rest of the expansions will be similarly discounted as well.)

Blizzard's article on the matter is here.

Note that one of the retailers in question is Amazon, so it should be possible to get this deal without actually having to venture outside.

Thanks! Just ordered two copies, though you can only do one per order. That's a pretty sweet deal!

Amazon Price Matched Best Buy.
MoP $15

Limit is 3 for this one.

Welp, the wife finally made a decision and surprised me that she bit the bullet on buying Mists of Pandaria from Amazon over the Black Friday crazyness. So she bought 2 copies of MoP for both of us to play together again and see if we can get back into it. I've been wanting to dabble back into an MMO (I've been waffling between Mists and GW2 for awhile now, she finally made my decision for me, yay for awesome wives!) and am happy to finally return. I just had a question for you fine folks:

Before me and her re-sub, I was wondering if this approach might work: Could any of you fine folk throw her account a scroll of rez before the actual copy of MoP comes from Amazon? Apparently when she ordered the games, they either ran out of stock on hand or something, it says it will be 1-3 weeks before the game is shipped. In between that time I would love to get back on our accounts and dabble around with my characters and get back into the game before diving into Mists, and this would be a good reason to.

If someone could private message me about sending a scroll of resurrection to her email I would be super grateful and you would most definitely get the rewards since we are planning to stay around for at least a couple months! Then she is going to send me one from her account after she gets one so we can be back up and running.

TL;DR version, anyone got a scroll of rez they are interested in passing my way? Just send me a private message or let me know if you're interested. Thanks guys!

PM sent. The game rocks now, love what they did with MoP

I can't help on the scroll of rez thing, but welcome back to the fold, fellow future addict.

I just hit 80 last weekend (woo hoo!) and if I can help either of you out with some quests or anything, let me know! My toon is a shadow priest named Mimble and I collect pretty rocks and kill stuff for their skins.

I should go ahead and put in this thread: Thanks to Keldar for the scroll of rez, my wife went ahead and got it and sent one my way, so we're all good on my end. Thanks so much, I can't express how much the GWJ community rocks!

I'm sure I will be kicking around and either transferring one of my many 80-85's over to where everyone is or just rolling a new Panda over there to Blackhand. Either way, thanks for the quick fix everybody. Hope to report back with tales of addiction and woe soon

5.1 incoming. Tuesday, sez Wowhead.

On the topic of gating endgame content in MOP, I wholeheartedly agree. What's worse is that once I reach Revered with say the Golden Lotus, I am then capped to earning 1,000 Valor Points a week. From my estimates, it'll take roughly 2 months to get revered with all the factions selling purples. Buying all the purples will cost around 20,500 VP, so that's 5 months of averaging 170 VP a day. Or a heroic and 18 daily quests every day.
And you can't even mix and choose to just supplement your ilvl gaps if you actually do have time for nonsense like LFR, because half those items are locked away at the end of the gear grind, namely bringing Golden Lotus AND another faction to Revered.
I'd rather them bringing raid atonement back and locking raids and instances behind reputation.

That being said, has anyone tried LFR yet? I may dabble next weekend, but I am pretty much expecting ninja looting, elitism, gear snobbery, unbearably offensive chat and everyithing else PUGs used to be plagued with.

Repent of your raiding ways, all ye sinners!

The ninja looting thing is gone, since each individual player's roll for loot is independent. The game rolls to determine whether you get something, then gives you something appropriate for the spec you queued/were selected for (regardless of whether you already have the item). It's good in a way, since the days of everyone needing everything is gone, but it's also bad in a way since you cannot gear up an alt-spec without running the alt-spec.

The elitism and offensive chat is certainly still there on occasion (at least on my server), but there's not much that Blizzard can do about that...

So I want to dabble in the Alliance side of things a bit and recovered my GWJ drood. Spend 3h lveling Archeology the other day and another riding all over Jade Forest to finally get Spear of Xuen. Comparing the first quest reward in Jade Forest with this beast of a staff (best agility blue in game, usable by level 85 as well and upgradeable) makes me chuckle.

Big ups to Blizzard for running that $20 for Mists on the Blizzard store. My Amazon order from Black Friday still hadn't shipped, so me and the wife cancelled that and are now rolling our first Panda Monks. September of 2012, you are a fun distraction!

Attention miners and flower pickers: Ore and herb spawn rates have been nerfed by about 50 percent.

Which explains why I'm stopping to mine Ghost Iron every 30 seconds instead of every 15.

Relatedly: If anyone gets into the Brawler's Guild, hook a brother up!

It's been a very long time since I played WoW, but +1400 stamina? Holy stat inflation batman!

It's weird and also getting to the point where the numbers are so ridiculous that it is hard to take seriously anymore...

Fall and lose a quarter of your health? 41,000 damage!

Feels like a weird disconnect IMO.

Blizzard mumbled something about a possible stat smush before 5.0 came out but nothing ever came of it.

In any case, pay attention to percentages. Yeah, the raw numbers are bloated, but it still takes about as long to kill stuff as it always has.

Still loving the game again. Glad I got back into it. I have so many ways that WoW is pulling my attention. I never actually leveled anyone through the new stuff that was introduced in Cataclysm and am split between just rerolling, leveling a Panda Monk or just going with my 85 that's on a different server than the GWJ guild.

BTW, thanks for the guild invite on muh low level Drood! Hope to be around leveling more this weekend

You'll level really fast, Leo. The guild bonus helps. Quests give a ton of XP. The instance queue is shorter at lower levels than it is at 90. (For DPS, at least. Monk tanks?) If you want to go faster, blow some gold on the BOA gear you get through the guild vendor.

And, yeah, the new Azeroth zones are much improved from Vanilla. My only quibble is that you outlevel each zone long before you exhaust the quests.

On a related side note that also wasn't mentioned in the patch notes, you can now randomly find Golden Lotus when you pick any type of herb, such as how Frost Lotus and such used to work. Keldaeric grabbed some Tea Leaves because they were just hanging out next to him anyway after he killed some monkeys, and much to my surprise looted three (3) lotuses along with them, all in the same spawn.

Note that you do not get the "Lotus Luck Bonus Loot" buff when you find them this way - you have to get the actual Golden Lotus spawn itself for that. At least it's easier to get them now for those who aren't farming mass quantities of Harmonies yet, though.

Blizzard sent me an invitation for 10 days of free game time and a trial of MoP. Just a head's up for people.

Keldar wrote:

Which is how it should have been all along. I have seen just one GL since the game dropped. One. Admittedly I don't spend much time picking herbs. But the drop rate was out of line.

In related news, gem prices seem to have doubled overnight. I'm guessing that folks are reacting to the news of the ore nerf, which is a good thing for my JC. But there was so much ore before that even a 50 percent nerf isn't going to make much difference in supply, at least not right away. I mined up a couple of stacks doing my Halfhill dailies, and I skipped about every fourth node.

There's still no solution to the what-to-do-with-all-these-green-quality gems. For the moment, I'm making them into rings or necklaces. I'll sell the blue procs on the AH. I'll vendor the greens -- it's a net of about 6G per item. If anyone on Blackhand needs any to disenchant, pst. I've got plenty. If anyone has a better idea on what to do with the gems, pst that, too.

One additional thing to note for leveling monks in case you miss it like I did. At level 20 you get a quest to use your teleport (think Moonglade) to Kun-Lai Summit for training. Once you complete the first training, you get +50% exp for 1 hour and a nice item. It also unlocks a daily to give you the +50% exp boost for 1 hour. Basically, the first hour on your monk any day should have a +50% exp boost, which applies both to kills/explores and quests. There are additional quests (so far, my monk is only 56 or so) at 30, 40, 50 that each give you the boost (so 2 hours that day) along with a level appropriate item.

I've been making the rings and necklaces and DEing them all, which is why my enchanter is swimming in mats (I think I'm close to 2k dust at this point). I believe that if you get a crit proc cutting the green gems, they're as good as the blue cut, but that hasn't been enough to get me to do that either. I keep thinking about getting a side business going selling enchants on the AH, but just don't have the time to figure that all out.

Yes, a perfect green gem has the same stats as the equivalent blue. I've basically been holding onto them until I need a gem of that color, then cut the green gems until I get a Perfect and then use that. The nice thing about that is that you start with all the green recipes, so you don't need to do any of the research to get a specific cut - you just need a little luck to get the proc to trigger.

Alchemists can also transmute green gems directly into blue ones with a Lotus. This may not be cost-effective if you prefer playing the market, but it does mean that you won't have to prospect quite as much ore, because green gems and blue ones become essentially the same thing. Then you can use the Ghost Iron for something else (like transmuting it into Trillium and then into Living Steel).
