Movember 2011

Good afternoon Goodjerdom!

This November, I'll be sporting a 'stache in support of Movember. For those of you not familiar with Movember, it's a campaign to raise awareness and funds for men's health issues, prostate cancer in particular. Why focus on men’s health issues? Check out some facts below.

* 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime
* A man is diagnosed with prostate cancer every 2.2 minutes
* 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime
* 24% of men are less likely to go the doctor compared to women

In order to gain visibility for this campaign, participating gentlemen will grow a moustache for the month of November. Starting out clean-shaven on November 1st, the gentlemen (also known as Mo Bros), will cultivate a healthy, hairy upper lip for the entire month.

Donations to Movember benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation and Livestrong.

You can check out my MoSpace, join my team, or make a donation at:

I'll be updating this space as November progresses, and I hope some of you will join the cause.

Good for you! Do Van Dykes count? I'm not sure I could pull off a 'stache.

Rules state that: a) your mustache cannot connect to your chin (a goatee) and b) that your mustache cannot connect to your sideburns (a beard). Given that, I think a Van Dyke is ok (I'm actually thinking of going that route).

Given that my remaining grandfather is in rough shape from stage 4 cancer (starting in the prostate, spreading to the colon and bladder, maybe elsewhere), I'm considering this pretty strongly. I'd have to give up the beard, though.

According to Wikipedia, Movember originated in little old Adelaide, my home town. I suppose that means I should participate, but I just know I'd look terrible with a half-arsed geek mo'.

How about some Front Page exposure?

Same for me, with the added fact that I look like a sexual predator with a mustache. As the father of a young daughter (soon to be 2!), I think that the mustache look is no good for old Sally.

I was going to do no-shave-November, but I like this better. Should we supply weekly photos?

I did this last year with a team of coworkers. As much as I support the charity, I will not be participating in growing a stache this year. My wife absolutely detests the mustache only look and last November was a very cold month in my house.....but good on you that do participate!

Thanks wordy!

Wife and I decided: I'll go 'stache only, but I won't be able to hit up friends for donations (I'm already hitting them up for Chicago Loot Drop). Anyone need a mo-bro?

Wait, so you want me to shave this:

So that I can grow a mustache?

yes.

At 37 years old, I still can't grow a beard, but a mustache I can do. So, I will!

Who are you, Al F****in' Swearinger?

Great idea Bennard! I'm inspired, so I'm going to do it. I've created an official GWJ Movember page if anyone wants to join me in the horrifying prospect of shaving my precious beard. I'll probably toss something onto the front page as well.

Went ahead and shaved this morning. Tried out a few variations to get a preview of how the month is going to go.

I just showed this thread to my wife. She thought it was a really neat idea, but forbid me from participating. Her quote - "you have to pose for baby pictures with Cora (our 2nd daughter, who is due in 3 weeks), and I don't want you looking like a perv."

I'm confused: do I shave tomorrow or do I shave Tuesday?

Pervs have ruined mustaches for all of us. BASTARDS!!!

I'm in - I've shaved pretty recently, so no great loss at the starting point. It'll be a little weird just having a mustache, though.

Start with a bare lip. I think that means I shave it all late tonight or early tomorrow morning.

Goatee removed this AM. So it begins.

Stubble de-stubbled. I'm on this stache like a rash.. or maybe I just need better shaving cream.

I feel like a porn star with this thing.

"I've come to clean ze pool"

Is it bad that I'm already looking forward to the end of the month so I can shave this thing off? Only had it 3 days and it's already annoying.

I'm jealous. I last shaved Halloween morning, and I still barely qualify as having dark peach fuzz on my upper lip. Heck, I'm not sure my wife has even NOTICED that I'm participating in Movember yet.

I'm in a similar situation Merphle. Greatness takes time, I keep reminding myself.

Also, I intend to get progress photos going hopefully tomorrow. Originally intended daily shots, but I don't even have a day 1 shot.

I got started late, but shaved my goatee last night. The reaction from my two daughters was one of abject horror. Hannah (9) just keeps staring at me saying, "Your face is naked!"

I've got like a fleet of caterpillars invading my upper lip. Guys at work said I'll look like wolverine in 3 more days. I hate the thing. Still, it's for a good cause and it gets a laugh out of a bunch of people. I've gotta upload photos sometime. I'm not really the kinda person to upload my pic for the internet, but we'll see how I go.

Mine is dark stubble. It'll go mustache-y all of a sudden, probably around Monday or so.
