"Orcs Must Die!" Catch-All

Combos. For example: lightning storm + tar trap + brimstone + grinder + spikes + arrow trap + archers + shooting crossbow at feet ... all concentrated in one small spot.

You have to hit orcs with lots of different things very quickly.

I got gifted this game 3 times yesterday by goodjers.

You people are animals. Also: Who wants a copy?

I took the plunge and finally got my hands on it! I don't think there's too much on the indie slide of things that I'm actually waiting for the sales for now...

Before I touch this, I'd like to become a boss in Dungeon Defenders.

I would like a copy!

This is correct.

Don't read the spoiler if you like figuring game strats out yourself but...

Spoiler:

I try and make my kill box as concentrated as possible. Overlapping trap/lightning storm kills for major combos are the way to high scores. My setup usually includes tar, grinder, mace, floor fire, and coin(this counts as a trap) all overlapping on to one or two squares (with a lightning storm) so when an orc dies on that square it gives me a 4-7 combo. If the space is too small for coin I go with poison spikes because brimstone kills things to fast to get the full trap combo bonus many times.

So I'm not normally a multiplayer kind of person but what I do like are the friends list leaderboards, so if anyone wants to add me on Steam to make that more fun for me that would be awesome. I say for me because I'm probably not going to be racking up any super high scores that entertain anyone else.

I think I did.

Coincidentally, can this game be multi-played?

Evilseed gifted this to me when it was on sale earlier this week (thanks again, man!). I have no idea what I am doing in the game, but it is pretty damn fun!

Oops - double post for awesomeness!

3 levels left for me to complete the game on WarMage difficulty with 5 stars throughout. Once that is done, I only have 2 achievements to get: The one for 30k orcs, and the one for for finishing the game on Nightmare difficulty.

The 30k orcs I may grind my way though. Not sure if I will go for the nightmare cheevo.

So, if you finish the game once, and unlock all the traps... when you restart on a harder difficulty, do you get to use all the traps, or do you start with a limited set again?

When you finish Warmage difficulty you keep everything you have unlocked and all the upgrades you have chosen. The new set of hard maps also provide skulls you can spend, so you can upgrade what you missed the first time.

I'm not sure I want to try the last level any more.

Just finished The Squeeze.

Spoiler:

Used the traditional z-pattern of barricades, tar traps and swinging mace.

With most of them, you start out by barricading the one where they first come through. In this case, I did it backwards. First I grabbed the coin weaver for traps. Then I started out the basics of the trap on the bottom level. Front of the barricades and the tar. Made sure that I had enough money to place a couple of brimstone traps at the door of the top hall and away I went. Then, as the money started pouring in, I completed the bottom while sprinkling more brimstone traps on the top. As I got more money, I added archers, and another modified mace barricade on the top. The only thing left for me to do was to check to make sure that fire/ice ogres weren't coming and provide assists when they showed up.

Now I am looking at Stairs of Doom.

Spoiler:

I should be able to do this one pretty easily as long as I get the barricades set up quick enough. From a quick first glance, the kobolds come out of the right, then the left. So I need to remember to build my mace trap on that side first. Also need to remember about the suicide kobolds and make sure to draw them to the side that has the brimstone traps.

I'm just starting out, but I want to change my profile name. Is there any way to do that, or should I just replay the first few levels on a new profile?

Or I could just realize that the high score list is using my Steam profile name, not my in-game profile name.

The 360 will be getting some DLC tomorrow.

Awesome.

Sorry if this has been mentioned already but is anyone having an issues with the spring trap launching enemies into the lava or other areas and the enemy doesn't actually die? Eventually the game will figure it out and kill them but it's screwing up my times and preventing 5 skulls.

Yes. Occasionally I had to find them and shoot them with the crossbow. Not just spring trap either, as I almost never used it. I sometimes used the wind belt to push large clumps into acid/lava, and it would do it quite often.

There's one level with a random unreachable ledge that the spring trap would occasionally launch guys on to. I would pick them off with the crossbow but the rest it seems like you're helpless. Bummer.

After a crap-ton of tries at 5-skulling "finale" (360 version) I have decided to say "screw it", and be happy with how I did.

I am getting way, way too frustrated with this game right now.

Yeah, it's not worth it. It's my only non 5-star level.

Also, went into the DLC and got my butt kicked a few times in a row on the first level. Think I'm done.

I have no idea how to keep up with that first level of the DLC.

Although I am tempted to cheese my way to 5 skull the last level. I think that if I grab the gauntlet from the DLC, combined with the electrical gauntlet, I can get a crapton of overlapping lightning storms going on at the same time that should take care of most, if not all, of the guys that come through, and I would just have to deal with the ogres.

Thanks to a Steam fallabaloo I've got an extra copy of Orcs Must Die from LocknLoad of GWJ. - Thanks by the way.

Who wants? Just PM me or post it here.

So I finally figured out the ideal way for me to 5 skull to beat Finale, which I just did.

Spoiler:

My loadout was the following:

Slow trap
Arrow wall
Barricades
Archers
Swinging mace
Freeze ring
Lightning ring
Coin generator
Fungus patch (the one that turns things to your side)

Here are the rough techniques I used:
Initial setup - North doors
Steel Weaver - coin bonus
Wall of arrow walls on the left hand side
2 coin generators underneath
I then went to the east doors and placed barricades on the southern set of stairs, with coin generators at the base of each stairs
1 (A – North) Orcs

As soon as the Orcs start coming out, drop a lightning storm. Then run to the other set of stairs, and drop a fungus patch underneath the ogre. They run slower, so you should be able to get it. Take care of any remaining orcs with the lightning ring/crossbow

2 (B – East) Orcs, Kobold Sappers (repeat)

Run to here and place as 2 arrow traps on each side, by the coin generators. Drop a lightning storm and then wait. Make sure to leave enough energy to take care of the sappers. They will come out of the south door first, then the north door. If you are quick enough with the crossbow, you can get a nice chain reaction going that will kill the entire line at once.

3 (C – South) Orcs & Archers
4 (D – West) Orcs

These two are pretty trivial. Put as many arrow walls and coin generators as you can. Don't be afraid to spend a lot of time up near the rift spamming lightning bolt at those that come up the stairs

Break
Note that, to the best of my knowledge, time isn't counted during the breaks. Set up as much of the following as you can during the break:

In front of C doors, drop a fungus patch in front of each door to catch the ogres. In front of A doors, sell one of the coin generators and drop a fungus patch in front of the left door to catch the Gnoll hunter coming out in wave 6. You probably want to upgrade your arrow walls to spring faster now and, if you have the coin, to do more damage through the steel weaver. Make sure that you save up enough money for the gnoll hunters in wave 6. Optional: In the corners on the eastern side of the square of hallways, place some slow traps and arrow walls at each corner. 1 arrow trap pointing down each hallway (4 in total) and slow traps at the beginning of each arrow trap trigger distance and where the arrow paths intersect (6 total)

5 (C) 1x Fire & Frost Ogre, Archers

This is pretty trivial. The ogres should catch 90% of the archers, you just need to finish them off. Then, run to the north side taking the portal.

6 (A) Kobold Sappers 2x Gnoll Hunters (TONS) (B) Kobold Sappers 2x Gnoll Hunters (C) Kobold Sappers

The fungus patch will take care of the gnoll hunter. Then use your crossbow to take out any sappers. Note that while most will come out of the left door, there will be some coming out of the right door. As soon as the sappers from A are taken care of, head to the right, just past the portal and drop a fungus patch at the entrance to the hallway and limber up your crossbow. Snipe any sappers you see as soon as you can, and then let the fungus patch take care of the hunter. Once that set of sappers is done, you have some that will be coming down the stairs towards you. Retreat down the stairs past the arrow walls and start sniping them as they come down. If it gets too hairy, you can jump across the ooze to the other side for a quick breather.

7 (A, B, C & D) Orcs

As quick as you can, run to the top and start barricading off as many of the entrances as you can. I started with barricading east and west pairs of stairs. Then, using your lightning ring, drop lightning storms as necessary and take care of the orcs that make it up the stairs. The southern side and one of the northern arms should be good due to the ogres that are sitting there. I usually dropped a lightning storm at the base of the left-hand northern stairs on the door level to thin out that side some. You should then be able to take care of any orcs that make it up with the lightning ring. This is a tricky part, and requires a bit of luck for catching the orcs. Read your minimap often to see when they are getting close to the top level.

8 (C) 2x Gnoll Hunters & Archers (B) Orcs & Archers

I started out by placing myself in in one of the southern corners and dropped two fungus patches with a couple of squares in between. That will take care of the hunters. The orcs and archers should be trivial to take care of with your lightning ring.

break
Set up the following during the break, you should have enough coin to do it all: Barricade off *all* of the entrances except for one of the north ones. In the north one you don't barricade off, place the swinging mace to the outside of the wall just at the top of the stairs, on the same level as the rift. Place a line of three tar traps underneath the mace, and barricade the stairs so that they are forced to walk along the path of the mace. Make sure that you upgrade your physics traps to affect ogres!! Sell any barricades that you have for the north or south stairways, and place them on the east and west stairways (if you have the coin) to force the orcs to go though an extra set of arrow traps/coin generators before they come up the stairs onto the middle level.

9 (A) Orcs, 2x Armored Ogres

Set yourself up in the ballista and start off the wave. Take as many shots as you can until the ogres start up the stairs. Then, drop out and, using your freeze ring, freeze the ogres when they are in the path of the mace. Take headshots with your crossbow as needed as well.

10 (A) Kobold Sappers (TONS) (C) 1x Fire Ogre & Kobold Sappers

Drop a couple of archers on the middle level at the top of each set of stairs for A. Pop through the portal to the south, and try to do the same. I never succeeded, and usually ended up losing one side of southern barricades to the kobolds. (You *might* be able to get them all by placing yourself in one of the corners and drawing the kobolds towards you, but I make no guarantees. I never tested this. If you have some cash for tar and arrow traps pointing down the hallways, you should be pretty safe with this technique) Use your freeze ring to take care of the fire ogre to the south.

11 (ABCD) Archers (B&D) 1x Frost Ogre
12 (A) 2x Fire Ogre (C) 2x Frost Ogre (B&D) 2x Armored Ogre

Now it is just working through the grind. If you put a couple of archers on the ballista platform to the north once the archers have gone by, some of the ogres will have problems with their pathfinding and get stuck running into the wall trying to get at them. (I found this out by accident). Then, simply use your freeze ring to get them to be taken out by the swinging mace.

Some of the timings between waves is pretty tight. It took me about three tries to get the timing right so that I was familiar with the placement of the traps and barricades. I had the following page (http://www.xblafans.com/orcs-must-di...) open and, after pausing the game, I checked what to expect in the next wave. I didn't see how much time I had left at the end, so when they are down to one or two orcs left in the non-ogre waves, don't be afraid to be aggressive and go after the orcs with your lightning ring.

So this game is pretty keen, and I'm digging the music. I wish I had more information about the upgrades though. They're expensive and use precious precious skulls, but I never know what I'm getting until I'm already committed.

I mean, 12 skulls to reduce the cost of a barricade from 800 to 700? That's negligible.

I picked up the whole package while it was on sale and am in love with the alchemist's satchel (throw acid bombs).

The upgrades as a rule are pretty marginal. Cheaper barricades can really come in handy sometimes ...

General rule of thumb: upgrade the things you use a lot.

Got to play this yesterday thanks to a gift from Strangleblades/LocknLoad - easily the most I've had with a tower defence game in quite a while. Love the sense of humour, and setting up a meat grinder with traps never gets old. Apparently I need to go back with upgraded traps in order to get a high score, but I don't quite understand how to get more points anyway.

Defend the void thingie and avoid taking damage. Every time I've done that I've gotten 5 skulls.
