Skylanders

Man I dig this game.

My collection is nearly complete, but it seems like Drobot (non-Lightcore) and Lightcore Hex aren't available yet. I'm not sure I'm onboard for Swap Force yet.

I've seen some of the Adventure packs locally. If anyone was looking for anything in particular, I can keep my eyes open for you the next time I'm in Target.

Lightcore hex has not been released, you can get it free at gamestop if you preorder swap force though.

Just scored the 'final' giant Ninjini from EB for the low-low price of $10... BARGAIN!

I just started on this and it's a fun game. I'm not sure how far I'll get in. I mainly got the starter kit so my niece and nephew could play when they come to visit. I got the original and Giants starter sets for $50 for the pair.

That's a lot of fun for $50 Just remember to share with the kids

So we preordered and received yesterday morning the new Skylanders Swap Force.

Today my son claimed he completed it. 18 hours after we bought it.

Dang, that was quick. My son does not know it is out yet and I hope to keep it that way until around Christmas.

We saw an ad for it at the movies, ahead of watching Planes.

Thanks cinema complex. My kids had no idea these even existed. Now I am asked constantly, each day, "are the new Skylanders here yet?"

I've even tried the "they don't work with Daddy's 'puter" line, but I'm then told to buy a new one. Now, if she'll just pester her mummy to "buy Daddy a PS4"...

Spoiler:

It will never happen.

Ben Kuchera at PAR says that it's way better than it has any right to be. In contrast, he was rather lukewarm on Disney Infinity, as I recall. I did not know this before, but you need to get a new portal for this one (but the old toys will still work). If we get it, it may be time to switch to the kids' Wii U. So far, there hasn't been any demand. I'm willing to wait.

Yes, you need the new portal but it comes in all the starter packs with the game, and you also will need to have some swap force figures to finish the game (you get two with the starter pack). The cool thing is that EVERY single Skylander released to date (for all the past games) works with the new portal and can be played in the Swap Force game. Very cool to be able to still use the old figs to unlock element-specific side-levels and doors.

Can you use the new portal with the old games?

Can you use old figures to get all the content in the newest one without buying any more swap force figures?

1. Yes

2. Old skylanders will work with newer games. You will need additional swapforce skylanders to get to some of the content.

Thanks. I wonder why the new portal was needed?

The new Swap Force Skylanders need the new portal. Something to do with their swappable parts, I'm sure.

I just got a message from my cousin asking for help, and I'm having trouble . Somebody bought the Wii version of the Skylanders starter kit as a present for her son (I'm assuming it's Swap Force, but I don't know for sure). They have a Wii U. There is no receipt.

Will the Wii portal work on the Wii U (assuming of course they run the disk through the Wii channel)?

I expect there's a decent chance that it's the same hardware, but all of my searches on hardware compatibility just give me info about the figures...

Yeah, outside of the handheld versions the portal hardware is the same, at least along the same tiers of the game. But with that said a receipt isn't an issue in the days of Target and Walmart. Walmart has tightened down but Target gives you two receiptless exchanges a year tied to your driver's license.

Arise!

We picked up a Swap Force Starter Kit in the after Christmas Sales. It was halo SRP, so we finally buckled.

Very sneaky Activision. Not only do you lock 'things' by element, but ability now too?

That's right. We have the water and fire swappers, but they only have the rocket and climb abilities. I'll need to look at the poster to figure this out methinks...

EDIT:
So, here goes. If you have the base starters of Blast Zone and Wash Buckler, you 'can' get away with only buying 6 more swap force characters (if you buy with your brain, and not your heart). This means avoiding the ones that 'look cool' over the ones you actually need.

So, in the format of Ability, Element, Skylander, here is your minimal outlay 'to buy list' for all those frugal parents:

This list will net you a Skylander Swap Force Member of every Element, and every ability, with you only having to purchase 6 more on top of the two that arrive with the portal starters kit.

Boost (rocket) - Fire - Blast Zone
Climb (ladder) - Water - Wash Buckler
Dig (shovel) - Earth - Rubble Rouser
Twister (tornado) - Wind - Free Ranger
Speed (FWD symbol) - Tech - Magna Charge
Teleport (portal) - Magic - Hoot Loop
Sneak (mask) - Nature - Stink Bomb
Jump (Spring) - Undead - Rattle Shake

Alternatively, you can buy all of the other 8, and they will give you a full set of both traits (element and ability), but they are not a straight swap out (ie, the 'other' undead Swap Force does not carry a jump ability, so the completing, not duping starts afresh).

Other than that, the seem have boosted the engine this time. The Skylanders look GREAT, with textures and materials seeming to pop off the little guys. Game is 'more of the same', which for my kids is great.

My only criticism is that out of 16 new Swap Force characters, not one of them is a female, which greatly dissappointed my two daughters as well. We are going to buy the roller derby undead character to try and balance it up, but seriously, at least series 1 and 2 had females, even if the Giants were under-represented as well (Ninjini kind of made up for that by her cooless, but not by much).

Off to see if we can find some of those critters tomorrow. Must stay strong, and stick to the plan...

I was also struck by 0 female representation in the Swap Force line up. This substantially discourages me from buying any more figures as I have two daughters and I don't want them getting the wrong idea. As it is, they don't actually play with Wash Buckler and Blast Zone, preferring Smoulderdash and Blizzard Chill; which I bought together with the basic Swap Force set.

I would probably buy more Swap Force, but only in 1:1 male/female ratio. This limits my choices.

I - sorry, Santa - got my kids Skylanders, and I've gotta say, I'm mighty impressed. It's a solid game, and both my 6- and my 4-year-old are really enjoying it (though my younger son frequently asks me to do awkward platforming, or - my favourite - sits in my lap while I play and swaps figs for me). I've been enjoying it to, and for all that the 50 bazillion figures are fairly shameless money grabs, they are at least well done, and the toys work well as toys, not just vidja game accessories.

3 thumbs up.

I was worried that the 'swapping' joint might become lose over time, or that 'wiggling' inserts would either distort, or worse yet, trap bits of finger/pinch skin, but the way they do come together and the magnets used just 'clunk' together in a very strong, non-lethal manner.

This has a pretty good wrap up of the post launch packs, and where they might be available.

We have really enjoyed Skylanders. My 4yr old got a bunch of them for Christmas. Can't find any that actually have the sneak ability for sale.

My 9 you old got Swap Force on day one and is in the process of a massing every skylander available. He got 80 toys r us dollars for Xmas and promptly spent it all on skylanders.

So, just the three figures then?

Oh man; the local Best Buy had a huge post-Christmas sale on older Skylanders. 50-60% off; 5 guys for $22. I - I mean, my kids were pretty stoked.

My son got Swap Force. I have to say, I think the magic is starting to wear off for me. I'm not digging it as much as the previous games.

They really are ratcheting up the need for all of the figures. You have combined element gates (enterable by either a Swap Force with both elements or two different characters with the appropriate elements) and there are still chests that are only openable by a Giant.

I couldn't figure out how to do that. Do you just swap them out on the portal and it works?

I believe that you need two people playing. The gate needed tech and fire (I think) so I had the fire covered already and my kid put on Trigger Happy for the tech. We both walked up to the gate and it opened.

I might give that a shot tomorrow. I put two Skylanders on the portal, but it said 'one at a time'. Didn't think to do it in 2 player mode (didn't even realise there was a 2 player mode).

Thanks!

You can also use a swappy guy that is half and half (ie, fire legs and water top).

Yeah, that's the problem. The guys I 'want' from the list above were released around launch down here, and being 'post-Christmas' we can't locate any.

Actually, I received a promotional email from the company I import most of my games from yesterday. One time only, unique code, 50% off one transaction! up to the value of $100.

I grabbed Free Ranger, Magna Charge and Rattle Shake. They were $4 more expensive than I could find them in stores here, but given I was saving $12 on each one, I got all three for $37 or something like that.

Shipping time from the UK is about a week to ten days, so pretty soon I am 'caught up' with the Swap Force, up to, and including, what has been released up to now. We then just need to wait for Stink Bomb and Rubble Rouser to hit the streets.

As much as I like the series, I have to agree with Nevin73. The pricing on this generation really does seem to be 'at a premium', rather than reasonable. It's still cheaper than Disney Infinity, but that stuff is ridiculously overpriced (at least in Australia).

Dead skylander thread arise! I just picked up the latest Skylander trap team for my sons birthday and am trying to set up multiplayer but it's not working. Any suggestions? We are on the Wii U.
