Skylanders

Just got this, but the darn retailers forgot to include the actual game with the starter pack I got, so I'll have to return to get it tomorrow... doh!

The boys and I swung by Best Buy this morning to pick up Skylanders Giants for my daughter's birthday. We also ended up getting 2 more new figures, 2 more giants, a Lightcore Drobot, and Wham Shell (Series 1). It's interesting: they are not making certain Sklyanders for series 2, including Wham Shell, which was hard to find due to it being the only one never put in a triple pack. However, Wham Shell does work on Skylanders Giants, which relieves me since I was worried some wouldn't work. So far, it looks basically the same, but there seem to be some graphical improvements. There is now also three difficulty levels, which can be changed on the fly. Sounds good, since it took my kids months to defeat Kaos in the last game (which they finally did with another infusion of figures).

They guy at the Best Buy store asked if I had been to Toys R Us earlier that day, since they opened up at 8:00. I hadn't, and he was really thankful for my business. I do hope Best Buy figures things out and sticks around.

I grabbed the entire Wave 1 of figures at Target at about 11:00AM, including their repainted Granite Crusher, although I actually think the original paint job is better, and the cool Fright Rider. I was amazed I got anything. The actual game (360 version) will be here from Amazon on Monday. The Gamestop exclusive 3-pack with the "Golden Canon" will be coming soon too. However, I just noticed today (by looking at the back of one of the starter sets in the store, which shows all characters), that some figures in this Series 2 Giants line will be released twice? Some characters out now (like Chill) will have a Light Core version later. So, I am returning any figs that will eventually have light core versions. Unfortunately, Shroom is in the 3 pack so I'm screwed there.

About Wham Shell's availability. A guy at Toys R Us filled me in two weeks ago that the reason this character was hard to find was that a lot of the print run for him was used as a carrying case pack-in figure that will be coming out soon.

This game is Diablo for kids. So much loot!

I hit Toys R Us on Sunday night and the shelves looked like the leftovers of a rats nest. I wasn't optimisitc when I went back to TrUs near my office the next day, but was shocked to see their shelves FLUSH with product. Tons of Legendary 3 packs and the Legendary robot giant. Take that ebay scalpers! I rebought everything I had purchased at Target at their Buy 1 get 1 40% and returned everything to Target. The girl putting out newproduct must have gone to lunch so I was able to dig through the cases of product she hadn't put out yet and found one each of the Wave 2 figures that were in limited quantity right now but will be coming out later: Sprocket and Flashwing.

Mine has asked for it for xmas so that's what he's getting. He's already bought one of the figures, jsut to have because he's addicted. Yes, my 8yr old has an addiction.

What age range would you guys put this series at? I have a 3 year old who can play Kirby's Epic Yarn pretty well, wondering how he would do with this and if it is too scary.

3 might be a little too young. My 4 year old was okay but it took a bit of prodding to get him to follow the open paths and navigate around. We tried it out at a local Best Buy this week. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised at the game and I'm thinking of asking Santa for it this year.

Cool. Thanks LockAndLoad.

I have a 3 and 4.5 year old. They both watch as I play. Some of the bits are scary, but they're not disturbingly scary (if that makes sense). Very pantomime evil, twisting mustache kind of scary.

Mind you, they both watch 'vintage' Digimon so YMMV.

This was the first game that my 3.5 year old "got" and loves to play to this day. I haven't popped it in the 360 (saving it for a reward for the now 4 year old), does anyone have any feedback on how the new difficulty levels function? There wasn't a ton of challenge in the first one (fun yes, challenge, not so much).

I've played it on the default, and the challenge seems matched to the previous game. I can only imagine that the two settings either side of this make it easier or harder but to what degree I'd be guessing. I'd check now for you, but both of mine have been misbehavin' of late, so Skylanders has also become a consequential re-inforcer in our house, as well as a reward. Kind of sucks because I want to get to the next part of the story.

If your 3.5 year old 'got' the first, then I would say they'll have no problems with the second.

Also, looks like the next lot of characters is due for release (at least down here) on the 29th of November. Fire flavoured Giant (hotHead), two of the new ones Flashwing and Sprocket (three if you didn't get JetVac in the Toys R Us Legendary pack) and some other Series 2's of the first lot. Date confirm on Hot Head here.

Hey everyone, I picked up Giants w tonight on the Amazon lightning deal and looking for some extra figures I bought an original Spyro series Drobot and a Spyro series Stealth Elf that I saw were just $3 each. So... I kinda have no idea what I bought. My kids (6 & 4) had fun playing Giants at Best Buy so I figured it'd be a fun Xmas day game. Are there any other characters I should keep my eyes open for? A specific attribute type? How about the original Spyro series, do they work okay? Can you run more than one Giant at a time? And... I don't know. Any buying tips would be appreciated!

I can't wait for XMAS! This is going to be so much fun!

The original Skylanders was perfect for my 6 year old son and I to play together. We still play, and now he's teaching his little sister (age 4) to play when I'm not available. The way it works is there are several elemental types, each type having around 4 Skylanders to choose from, and there are side areas in the game that only a certain element can unlock. Not required quest areas, but treasure and bonuses areas. All areas, including the main quest line, are "weak" to certain elements as well, but it's a minor thing. We bought a few extra Skylanders to cover the elements that weren't covered in the initial 3-pack, so now we have around 8. Some parts of the game are tricky for kids, so having extra Skylanders to pop in on the fly when one dies is handy.

I haven't picked up Giants yet, but from what I've read all of the original Skylanders work with the Giants version. We'll be getting the new version once we take down the last boss - I imposed that incentive on the kid ever since Giants came out. Finish a game, THEN buy a new one!

What is this blasphemy?

I'm thinking of finally getting the starter pack to play with my daughter. She's turning 5 in December and I think it would make a great gift for her; she loves dragons.

We'll see come xmas bonus time what I decide on.

Did the Giants lightning deal for my son as well. He'll be 6 as Christmas so I figure he'll be able to handle playing ok.
He doesn't realize the other guys can be added to the game so I just got the starter set. I'm sure he'll figure it out eventually though

That didn't sit well with me either. I think he just broke one of the Goodjer Commandments.

She should love it. One of the few games that both of my girls like, that doesn't have a slew of male-centric characters either.

Spyro is the 'main' dragon (magic aligned), but Cynder is one of the female cast (and an undead element). Camo is another dragon, and has a life/nature element alignment. Whirlwind is my eldest's favorite. It's a wind aligned dragon, and maxed out shoots storm clouds out into the enemies that you can then bounce rainbows off for devastating effect!

Note to self, must make playing Dishonoured a priority this week...

Can anyone tell me if the Giants starter kit comes with the same disc/game as the original starter, or if it's a totally different game?

My kids have the original for Wii, but I'd rather transition them over to the 360 now that they have one. If I can just pick them up a Giants starter for 360 and have them off and running that would be great. Otherwise I have to keep them on the Wii because they'd be pretty bummed to lose all their progress so far.

totally new game

edit: but your characters will keep their experience, etc no matter the platform.

The Giants game is an entirely different adventure for your Skylanders. It's a new game basically.

However, your Skylanders carry across everything they've learnt. Their skills, their levels, even their hats (although take them off, and you lose them).

Even if you bought the first game for the 360, I'm not sure how you would transfer the actual story progress across, you'd still be starting the 360 game from scratch, but with leveled up Skylanders.

Similar QandA here confirming transfer will retain individual Skylander progress, but no way of retaining/transferring actual game progression.

Hope that helps.

EDIT:
Bugger, Tanhausered!

I was curious about this too and here was the response I found online...

Hello, Thank you for contacting Activision Customer Support.

Yes but they are not all compatible. The Xbox portal will only work on an Xbox. The 3DS portal is universal and will work on any system except an Xbox. The PS3 and Wii have the same portal and will be interchangeable and can also work in the PC version of the game. The PC portal will only work on the PC version of the game. All portals will work for the Web world.

Please feel free to contact us again for technical issues or questions

Even that response from Customer Support is inaccurate, the Portal never worked with my Mac (for the Web World integration).

OK, so if I am understanding you right: The Giants game has content that the old non-giant Skylanders can be used in, as well as any new Giants we buy them?

That makes it sound like going ahead and moving them to the 360 is the way to go, if there's a whole new game world to use the same Skylanders in they are unlikely to want to swap to the old one again anyhow and if they ever did they could just do it on the Wii since the figures themselves are remembering their levels & skills.

I'll look into getting those dragons as well, then. Thanks!

Spot on. We have all of the series 1 Skylanders, and we've been playing the new adventure with those because all of the series 2 Skylanders aren't out yet (staggering releases again, grrrrrrr).

Just to clarify.

Series 1
All of the Skylanders that came out withe the first game.

Series 2
The Skylanders that released with the second game. That includes the eight elemental giants and eight new characters (one per element). They have also reposed some of the series 1 characters, and released those as series 2. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GET THESE IF YOU HAVE THEM IN SERIES 1. Same with the other Series 2 variations, the 'lightcore' Skylanders. Some are series 2, some are series 1. Basically, they let some of the portal illumination move through the figure, and light bits up. The Giants do this as a matter of course (looks cool too) and they've just redesigned a few of the normals in this manner too. Again, if you have them already, no need to duplicate, but it can make getting the other series 2 interesting if they have lightcore variants.

In game, Persephone remembers the skill tree decision your series 1 characters made, and you can continue your expansion of the characters' skill sets' in the new game.

Overall, they have done a great job with the resistance to gouge the consumer (too much). I downloaded the latest iOS world building app for the series, thinking it would only recognize the web codes for series 2 Skylanders. Nope, it accepted, and unlocked all of the Skylanders we had from series 1 in this new world too.

Awesome, this makes the buying decision easy. Thanks!

My son bought Skylanders Giants a coupke weeks ago after selling some toys, and he absolutely loves it. So does his brother. They're 9 and 8, respectively.

One thing I've noticed is that the game seems buggy. Tonight, for instance, a music segment in a particular area seemed repeating errantly, and one of the characters that's supposed to speak wasn't. The boys have played those areas before so they know what to expect. We closed out the area and as the game was loading the central area or something, it was stuck loading. For about 20 minutes.

Thing is, I'm not sure if it's the portal, one or more figures, or the game itself. I'm leaning toward the latter, but I'm writing to see if any of you have experienced anything similar.

I haven't experienced this (yet thankfully). Do you have the game installed to the hard drive and were the kids swapping out the Skylanders a lot prior to the glitch?

I actually don't know how to install to the harddrive. They're just playing from the disk. I'm not sure if they're changing Skylanders out too frequently, but they change them out sometimes. Maybe I'll see if the bugs appear if they play without changing Skylanders at all, as a first step.

I know that, for instance, Bethesda games are typically buggy and often predictably, so I wanted to confirm if this was a similar case. West take something back for exchange, but I'm not sure what to take back yet.
