Skylanders

I still don't think they've released all of the figures yet.

I know Toys R Us online had a few (only a few) available. We just ordered Darklight Crypt, Boomer, and the figure 3-pack of Zap, Hex, and Dino-Rang. Not the ones that we really wanted, but good enough for now.

Anyone else having problems with their portal recognizing characters are on it? I got this for my niece and oldest nephew. It worked fine when we set it up at my parents'. But since then it hasn't always worked at their parents' or when they spent the night at their grandparents'.

Which system is it for? I know the 360's portal is wired, but the other systems are wireless. If it's one of the wireless ones, it could be that the batteries are low?

Yeah. Some of the characters seem to be problematic and if you bump them they'll redetect too. It's caused my son and me to switch characters accidentally a few times.

Also each system-specific portal is just that, system-specific. A Wii portal (to my knowledge) won't work on a 360.

Hmm, I could have sworn I read that they were all interchangeable.

The figures are. The portals, again, to my understanding, are not. So you can take the figures that came with your Wii starter kit and play on your friend's 360 starter kit.

Duh. Should have mentioned that. It's for the Wii. My niece said her dad did change the batteries but to no avail. Hopefully they got it working 'cause I got it from Amazon and already threw out the receipt, I think, since it was working when I left and I did a major cleanup of my apartment that wasn't very discriminatory about what I was tossing.

You can use any of the non-3DS bases on the PC however.

Huh, that's sort of awesome. Now how do I buy the software without buying a new starter kit?

I wasn't able to figure out if there's a PC version of the standard game. There is a free online game and you can link your Skylanders to that version of the game.

I think that's all there is on the PC. It seemed like what Gerstmann was saying when he was going nuts about the game.

Not sure about that...there is a definite starter pack for the PC version that includes a portal. The web game seems to use the figures' web code that can be used without a portal.

Some of the portals are interchangeable. This was taking from Gamefaqs someone contacted Activision about portal compatibility.

Hello, Thank you for contacting Activision Customer Support.

Yes but they are not all compatible. The Xbox portal will only work on an Xbox. The 3DS portal is universal and will work on any system except an Xbox. The PS3 and Wii have the same portal and will be interchangeable and can also work in the PC version of the game. The PC portal will only work on the PC version of the game. All portals will work for the Web world.

There is a PC version of the game, I've seen it on the shelf at Target.

Skylanders at Amazon. Yep PC has it's own.

Really sounds like the 3DS one is the way to go though. Portal will work on PS3/Wii/PC if you want to pick up the one of those later, and it has those exclusive characters.

So far there's no way to get the software other than with the portal so cross-platform compatibility is moot unless you really want the 3DS version of the game.

The compatibility of the 3DS Portal makes the idea of grabbing the game as a pre-own for the PS3 or Wii a lot more likely - but I can't see someone not trading in their Portal if they get rid of the game.

I enjoy the 3DS game, but I think the home console (and apparently PC) version of the game is the way the game is supposed to be played. There is no co-op on the 3DS, a key factor in making the game fun. I do think that the 3DS version makes a really good complement to the home console version.

We have both 360 and 3DS and I concur. The 3DS version is meant to complement. You cannot even hot swap the characters once inside a level. But, it is fun for my boy on longer road trips.

How do you keep a figure on the portal in a car? Or is that why you can't swap...once loaded he doesn't need to be there?

This. You can load 2 Skylanders into the 3DS game, and can swap them back and forth mid-level, but that is all the swapping you can do. The 3DS portal turns on when you push down on the top, and powers off on its own fairly quickly.

Annoyingly, have got a bug on the Wii version. We did the Quicksilver level, then stopped to get upgrades. Now that save won't allow us to talk to the weapon master to do the next bit. Annoying!

Still have to try redoing the whole Quicksilver level to see if it lets you carry right on, but in the meantime: ARRG.

Update: Googling my problem, it seems widespread on the Wii version.

So if you're playing on the Wii, when you do the Quicksilver level, you need to immediately do the next level (not say no and return to the ruins).

The figures are starting to come back in stock. I picked up a trio which got us the life and air elements. The kids got back into the game and pushed forward to the final level.

The final boss is a severe pain. The kids have been able to play (blunder) their way through the game with minimal assistance. Now they are working on defeating Kaos, which according to Gamefaqs has 10 stages! There are dead Skylanders all over the place, and of course they staying "We need more Skylanders!"

Drobot looks cool though.

It took me and my son 15 figures to beat Kaos. I think by myself I would have lost less, but that's no fun.

Same here I watched my son he went through all 12 figures that we have and I was pretty sure I could do it in at least 5 but I do want to get the achievment for just using one to beat him.

Figures appear to be showing up again; a nearby Target had a bunch of them and picked up two more three-packs. Oddly enough, still out on Amazon, but several Targets in the area have them.

I will have to check the stores around me this week, my son would love a couple more.

I called every day this week and a nearby Gamestop finally got a shipment in. I also got two more 3-packs, I now have all of the elements, as well as Drobot, which is a nice plus. I didn't particularly care about getting Wrecking Ball, but the Wife really, really loves him. I hope that he's fun to play as well, we'll find out tomorrow when she gets her brace off.

My daughter loves him (it?) especially after she unlocked the burp attack (which comes complete with the expected sound effect)
