Skylanders

Yeah this was a great choice for a Christmas present for my son. He's really been enjoying it and playing along with him is a good time.

It really is the holy grail of kids game:.

+ It's actually fun to play with them, the leash makes it easy for them to not drift away
+ buttonology is basic but the powers are fun
+ puzzles are fun to let the kid solve
+ my boy loves playing with the figures outside the game with his friends
+ no jumping (except for 3DS) takes away the frustrating falling deaths typical of 3-5 y/o
+ more characters means more available lives for each level (may be negative for some)
+ it's fun to replay levels
+ can be played in short sittings with a rewarding upgrade available after each level
+ my kid is really taking to the characters themselves and loves to know the names

You really can't beat it for Parent-child gaming. Until now it has been mostly Lego games. We have fun with those but it can be frustrating as hell with a young child. Even I miss the stupid platform jumps all the time.

+1 to what AcidCat and MisterStatic said.

We're going to go look for some extra figures tomorrow, after I offered to pay for half if she covered the other half with her saved pocket money.

Let me just leave this here:

That's not my photo, but one I came across looking for storage solutions. It's a Plano Stowaway Pro-Latch 3730. Amazon has them for $9, but you might be able to find them at Wal-Mart or local sporting goods store for less. They work brilliantly.

Great idea. I use one of these to store heroscape figures.

Anybody else discover that every store in their area is out of new 3-packs or singles?

Yup. Took the kids out yesterday so they could buy some new figs and BB, Wal-Mart, and Target only had the base game.

I've noticed in the Wal-Mart here there is nothing 'good' for the 360 there, they're all sold out/not-stocked (except DJ hero hence the 'good'). They do have the base game and I think there were a few Starter Packs for Skylanders but I hadn't been in the electronics section for a while and when it clicked what I was seeing it kind of surprised me. In the add-on market MS is kicking butt.

Well, we found our extra figure packs. All the games-specialist places seem to have sold out, but I checked out a Warehouse branch (they're ultra low cost retail, sorta like WalMart in the States) and they had a pile of them. I was tempted to buy all of them but managed to resist the urge. For now. Daughter insisted on the box with Stealth Elf in it, whereas I was looking purely at element coverage (we only added two new, it could have been three!)

As soon as she finishes her chores, we'll be taking the new figures for a game.

Dinorang is probably my favorite right now, has a good range, packs a good punch, but can also take a hit as well as being reasonably quick. He's just a machine. Speaking of Machines, I'd really like to try out Drobot, I've heard nothing but good things about him.

My proud gamer parent moment just now:

Yesterday, at the shop, the daughter was all "I want the pack with Stealth Elf in because I like her".

Today: "we should get one of each element".

Next up, I guess she starts paying attention to the stat number increases and collecting for specific character power ups.

Any idea how long this Skylanders "bubble" will last? It's going to prevent some...other...folks from jumping in if the going rate for certain characters is almost as much as the starter packs.

All the stores I've talked to expect a bunch of new stock in a few weeks, and that's here at the bottom of the world. I think it's just the big Christmas buy up that caused a problem.

The one thing I miss is in this game is a mini map. And the "leash" can be annoying at times. During certain jumping puzzles, my son and I decide that one of us should "tune out" until the puzzle is over.

Yeah also checked my local Target and Gamestop this weekend to pick up another figure or two, completely sold out. We still have 9 total figures though, so plenty of Skylanders to level up - we're only missing the Undead element.

And gameplay wise the only really annoying thing to me has been those rotate-the-lock puzzles.

Really? I've always liked puzzles like that. I was annoyed that the most difficult one I had to solve was just for a coin chest.

Yeah, I actually like these puzzles too, and have even redone them to get the best rating I can.

yup, these figs are going to go at a high premium on Ebay about now.
Nobody in Ottawa has them, anywhere.

Drobot is awesome and easily one of my faves.

I also like the flame archer guy...name escapes me but the alt attack is a boost of speed with a flame trail left behind. It's great for getting past those minions that like to blast at you.

Looking for some death and wind world characters next.

Sonic Boom is kind of awesome for an Air character. His alt is hatching babies that follow along and put a hurting on any bad guys.

My son and I have a blast with this game, and I am trying to find more skylanders to get. As mentioned above, they are impossible to buy now! I've even been tempted to get the 3ds version just to get 3 new ones for him.. but I can't really justify that given it's price and the fact that I don't have a 3DS!

You're not alone. It's really annoying that the 3DS has exclusive figures.

That is hilarious! My son did just that - even though the 3DS is mine. He wanted to get an Air, Life and Fire Skylander, and the store only had Skylanders he already owned and one Magic guy, so he saw that the 3DS version came with Dark Spyro, Stealth Elf and IgKnightor and saw that his gift cards would indeed cover the 3DS version, so now he only lacks an Air type to have at least one of each.

With a little practice, Stealth Elf is really cool, the ability to go invisible and then get a guaranteed combo hit when you break stealth is really nice when you have a big nasty enemy to contend with.

Does anyone else have the 3DS version? It is remarkably different from the home console versions - you can jump, for one thing. The story is totally different, and each of the levels has about 5 goals to complete. When you complete one of them, the villain shows up, and you have to escape the level before your time runs out. All the Skylanders have a double-jump ability, and their powers are a bit different, too. Hex, for example, can float in the air for a while, but her powers stay mainly the same. Zap, instead of leaving a trail of slime behind that he can electrify, leaves geysers behind him, and then his "Y" attack makes a wave that can move them around. The game also doesn't require you to leave your Skylander on the portal, you just use the infrared connection to load a Skylander in, and they stay there until you swap them out. It is a little annoying, moving a guy in and out just to make sure they keep their XP when we put them into the PS3 version, but it is a lot easier to level them up in the 3DS version, too.

Oh, because it's not obvious at all, the set pieces that add new areas, like Darklight Crypt and Pirate Ship, also work as a single use "boss killer" item during a stage. I only found that out from the wiki.

Wait, what?

If Im in a stage and I drop the crypt piece, something happens!?

Exactly. Totally intuitive, right? Can't believe you didn't figure it out.

We unleashed hell with the Darklight Crypt, the Pirate Seas, and the Ghostly Swords during the first Kaos encounter and it almost felt like cheating.

Darklight Crypt
When used in the Ruins, the crypt grants acces to the Darklight Crypt chapter.
When used during a chapter, the crypt unleashes a swarm of ghosts at everything on the screen. It deals 999 damage to all enemies and can only be used once per chapter.

That's from this wiki.

Holy crap, played the game off and on with my daughters (9 and 6) over vacation. They got to the last few areas and it was getting a little tough so I jumped in to help them beat the game. Holy difficulty ramp. We have 10 or 11 figures, and Kaos kicked all 11 of their asses in the final fight. Every other fight in the game was a breeze. You know in an adult game I can almost forgive that but to do that in a kids game is especially bad. I would say it's a mistake by their designers but the cynic in me says that they did it on purpose so you'd have to buy more figures.

My kids picked their favorite skylanders (sonic and spyro) and played with them for everything. Only used the other ones occasionally to open special areas and such. That meant that every skylander besides the 2 they liked are below level 3 which makes that last fight especially hard. I doubt my kids are the only ones that would do this. Now I have to teach them what "level grinding" means so we can beat Kaos.

Really well done game until that last level.

Huh. 3DS version sounds good.

Everywhere is sold out of everything. Grr...

Got the Wrecking Ball-Stealth Elf-Sonic Boom pack today we ordered on Amazon last week; there were 6 left when we ordered. Now, it's listing at $96.99. Holy Capitalism, Batman

I thought it would be easier to find these things after Christmas, but now I think everyone that got the main game for Christmas is trying to get more figures, making it even worse.

Well, I'd be happy to go back to the local store that has these and grab the sets to post to anyone needing them for price+postage. However, postage from New Zealand will probably end up being almost as expensive.

I think they had a couple of Stealth Elf/Wrecking Ball/Sonic Boom sets left.

I have been having the same problem getting more of these guys for my son, I am sure that the stores will be getting new shipments soon, probably flood the stores with them and making everyone who overpaid for them feel silly.
