Gotta love progress!

I got ADSL 15down /0.8up with QOS for gaming and no bandwidth cap (only cellular companies have those but one of them doesn't) . It's all maximum rates and I might be able to get it on speedtest but in reality my country is not well connected to the internet due to the monopoly on the underwater lines .

The current line is shared with other countries and it's symmetric 3.84~ tbps on 6 fiber pairs( I think the ISPs only buy about 100gbps). In Q1 2012 the monopoly is going to end with two new lines to Europe one will be 7.2~tbps and the other would be 42~tbps . This will upgrade our internet connection to the world by about 50tbps and hopefully it would ease congestion.

Despite the bandwidth deficiency and huge congestion the internet works ok . My steam downloads rarely work faster than 500kBps (4mbps) . I'm generally not too satisfied by the extra speed and I though I could have managed with 10mbps.

There's something slightly phallic about us all slapping our bandwidth on the table to compare. I'd join in, but I was just looking at some pictures of the Arctic Circle, and there are a few shrinkage issues.

Was thinking that as well. On the other hand, it is kinda nice to see all the differences. And that they are bullsh*t, just because companies
can do whatever.

Internet is included as part of the rent. I'm asked to limit my total bandwidth to 30GB a day but I've gone over that a few times and had no complaints. :)

30GB... in a day... WTF?!! How?!?!?! I have a 100GB quota per month and barely even scratch the surface. I average maybe 300-400 MB a day? Maybe?

Bruce Lee was jogging with a friend, and decided to increase the miles that they were going to run from 3 to 5. The friend who had been doing well on 3 miles complained "I'm older than you, I can't do 5." After some cajoling the friend decided "What the hell, I'll go for it." and actually seemed to be doing pretty well until 3/4 of the way through mile 4. His heart pounding, and gasping for air, he remarked "Bruce, if I run anymore I'm liable to have a heart attack and die!" Bruce said "Then die." This got the friend angry enough to finish the five miles. Bruce's response later when questioned about such a "callous" thing to say to a friend:

"Because you may as well be dead. Seriously, if you always put limits on what you can do, physical or anything else, it'll spread over into the rest of your life. It'll spread into your work, you morality, into your entire being. There are no limits, there are plateaus, but you must not stay there, you most go beyond them"

MapQuest still exists?

1.3 down, 0.3 up.

I can't be bothered to post a little picture. I don't have the bandwidth to spare!

A company are offering to put a fibre optic line into our village if enough residents are interested. I'm going to go and kick the neighbours until they sign up.

If I want to download a film in HD, it's quicker to drive to my father's house, use his 50mb line, and drive back. It's only a 60 mile round trip!
