Super Mario 3D Land Catch-All

Got there with only 75 lives? Yeah, I'm not one to collect coins, like, at all. Especially when I was barely dying in the pre-S worlds, so I cared even less. I also haven't gone back into any levels to pick up missed star coins yet, so I'm sure I'll restock on extra dudes at some point.

Well, I think I really truly beat the game. I'm sure there's some other level of "beating the game" where you collect all of the stars, but I finished the back half of the game. What a funny turnaround. From pretty much hating this game to finishing the back half. Kind of shocked that I did that. The game is good. Really good. I wish we could see more from this team on the 3DS. Looks like they're busy with the Wii, though.

Is there a way to swap the button controls so that I can use A to jump and B to run? I've put a couple of hours in to this now, and I'm still finding the button layout really jarring, but I've found no way so far to swap it.

I used Y and B. That was my compromise.

So I should push through then? I'm kind of in the same opinion you were on this one. I just haven't enjoyed the game enough to push through. I've known that there was a supposed shift but never felt the urge to get there.

I was pretty blah on it through the first 8 regular worlds. It was nice enough, with a few interesting elements, but none of those seemed to be fleshed out enough to be interesting, and the whole thing was super easy.

Then I finished regular world 8, and the second half of the game opened up. Whole different ball game. Suddenly they were using those elements from the first half in really interesting ways, and the difficulty jumped up a bunch.

I (unfortunately) think about it like Diablo 3. The first playthrough on normal difficulty is actually too easy, but lets you get to the real game, which is what happens after, except here, it's a whole new set of levels instead of "what you just did, except HARDER".

Is there any functional reason to use

Spoiler:
Luigi
except personal preference? I couldn't see one.

Well, I've had my copy of 3D Land on my XL since January as an eShop purchase. I just kept picking at it for 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there. Eventually I grew to really like the game. I still think the camera angle artificially creates difficulty at times. I still have many of the issues I had with it earlier. But having it readily available constantly and getting a little bump from Streetpasses helped increase my enjoyment of it.

Finally this minor spoiler helped me.

Spoiler:
I ended up really enjoying using Luigi. I couldn't tell you a functional difference. Height, maybe. Or maybe I was just sick of the modern Mario voice so the Luigi voice was a change of pace. Either way I don't think I would have done the back half of the game without the option of playing as Luigi.

Why is that a spoiler?

In any case:

Spoiler:
There are a few of the Star Coins that it's significantly easier to reach with Luigi than with Mario. There might even be a couple that you can only reach with Luigi, but I'm less certain of that.

But in general, the difference here is the same as it's been since Mario 2: Luigi jumps higher but doesn't stop as well as Mario. It just lends itself to a slightly different playstyle, but there is more of a difference than just the look of the character.

Spoiler:
I guess it's a spoiler because until you beat the game, you don't even have an indication that Luigi's in it, let alone becomes a playable character.

I figured there might be a jump height difference, but I didn't see the usual "leg pumping" animation to make that clear. Or maybe I missed it, I didn't use him that long.

I find it curious that I enjoyed the game when it was less challenging and started to get irritated when it became more challenging.

Still loved it the whole way through, though.

Finally got this, after I caught an Amazon sale the other day. Played through World 1 this morning. So fun. Found all the bonus coins except for 1-3. Looks great, controls great, and enjoyed it so far. Looking forward to more later.

I recently finished 3D Land, after getting a 3DS XL for Christmas. I loved the game. I ended up getting most of the bonus coins, and finishing all the levels at least once.

Spoiler:
I didn't get all the special coins in the Special Worlds, and didn't play much with Luigi. Also, the ghost Mario levels are super annoying, or at least were for me.

Great game, though. You're in for a treat, Stele.

So in other words you didn't *really* finish the game.

Sorry, I take perverse joy as a someone who never "completes" games that I went all the way.

I'm just happy to have gone through the regular worlds - I'll definitely take my time with the special worlds.

But now at least I get some stars on the mystery box I send with Streetpasses.

Finished world 2 last night and finally died a couple times. 2-4 I think. Where the red blue blocks flip when you jump. Missed the timing a few times but it was fun.

Did some world 3 this morning.

If you liked 3D Land, I cannot recommend 3D World on the Wii U highly enough. It's takes this game's template and expands it in beautiful and interesting ways. It's marvelous.

I only hope we get this back on the 3DS again. They could roll with this new "series" for a couple more games, IMO.

I am really itching to get a Wii U to play 3D World. My son really enjoyed watching me play 3D Land last night. He's ready.

Yes someday when I get a Wii u.

Finished world 4 and 5 last night. Up to 99 lives.

EDIT: Whoa. 102 lives now in world 6. It doesn't cap at 99?

I think I finished (my 100% complete run) at over 300 lives. In Super Mario 3D World (not sure if you can do this in Land) you can get to Crown/Crown/Crown like in Super Mario Brothers.

You can reach 1110 lives maximum.

Finished the main 8 worlds with 124 star coins.

Didn't realize there's a full 8 special worlds after that. Wow. Like a whole other game!

I haven't even touched the special worlds. I should as I found the base game to be incredibly fun, but horribly easy.

Yeah, fun but not super challenging. Kind of what I wanted really. Although I will say I thought the last Bowser fight was very tough.

If you want a challenge, make sure to get all the way to the final bonus stage. I never did complete it.

I didn't, either. Crazy hard.

Stop making me put games back on my pile.

Okay, we live in a crazy world. A crazy world where I spent the first 4 months of this game's release talking about how much I hated the 3D and perspective and yet completed it 100%. Yet I'm the one who finished it? What's happening in this world?

I really liked the 3D perspective. They did a good job of putting the camera on rails so you didn't have to worry about tweaking it yourself like in Mario 64.
