PC Racing Simulation

So I fired up the Raceroom Racing Experience sample on Steam and immediately after exiting I got my beta invite email. Anyone else in it?

I'll have to try that today. I've been a big SimBin fan since GTR 1.

For any of you Game Stock Car fans out there, SimHQ Motorsports is going to run a casual series of races on Sundays in February. They are still working out the details, but the thread for the discussion: http://simhqmotorsports.com/forum/ub...

I don't have GSC yet, but I was going to pick it up this weekend.

:D That's what I just switched to. Like I said, I need to finish detailing and cleanup, so please excuse the mess. I still need to mount my Warthog's flight stick, but the throttle is mounted. I wanted something that I could use as a workstation (well general gaming as I now work exclusively from my laptop anyway), driving setup, and for flight sim'ing. The R3volution isn't perfect, but it is amazing for the money and the only thing that meets my needs. My only complaints are just the garage engineering design. Of course that's the reason it's not a $1500 cockpit too.

Next step is to grab Simvibe and start adding transducers as I have more toy money.

Totally have this saved so the next time my wife says I am techno-spoiled. I am showing her this.

Cool. Great racing.

Purchased GSC this weekend and I've run a couple races against the AI. They are surprisingly good. They make some mistakes and they aren't constantly running you off the road like in other gmotor sims. The rest of the sim is great too. The sounds are satisfying, the 3d models and textures are well done and the physics are challenging but not too hard.

Ok, I have a dilemma. I have the money for it (kinda), I want it, but I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger. I guess the biggest thing is not getting to try the thing out before I buy it. It's hard to commit that much money to it. For that much money I want it to be PERFECT, but buying it based on pictures and reviews is hard for me to do. AAAHHHHHH!!!!

I have a much less expensive setup, that works great. I'll post some pics shortly.

Are you talking about getting the R3volution or other stuff too?

I will say I'm loving the PC rig. The free time I've had that hasn't been claimed by Rocksmith has been put into just training and exercises in iRacing. Loving it!

Ya I'm talking about the R3volution. The rig that I built myself works just fine for racing but that's it. I know getting the R3volution will mean I won't have to take the time to move my computer to the other side of my room every time I want to race and move it back to do non-racing PC gaming. I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger on it. God knows how many times I've been back and forth on whether or not to commit.

It's not perfect, but that was mostly minor niggles during assembly. In actual use the R3volution is great. It's very comfortable for general computer usage. The only thing I could possibly see being better than this would be a custom 80/20 rig, but that looks a lot more industrial and will cost more.

So far I've made a custom little bracket for the Fanatec SLI mount so I can mount my phone to my wheel for running DashMeterPro. Now I need to get a Ram Mount for my iPad for iSpeed. The clamp on Ram mounting arm means you can add on just about any sim gadget.

The only gadget I have so far is a Derek Speare button box

Cool, I know Derek recommends the Ram mounts. I think I might spring for one of his boxes soon. I'd pay almost as much for the parts and an Arduino to roll my own anyway.

Do whatever it takes to get driving! I want there to be another GWJ run at iRacing.

OK, just did a video instead:

Nice setup. When I was planning my DIY rig I had thought about doing something like that, but since I was still in school, I had to move it into the dorm when I went back to school, then move it back to my parent's place after I graduated, then move it into whatever apartment I ended up in. And now, I plan on trying to find a rental house after my 1-year lease is up in July, so I'll have to move it again. That's another thing I like about the R3volution. If I'm not mistaken, the base and the monitor stand aren't connected, so it would be fairly easy to move. I want it so bad but I don't want to be more broke than I already am....lol

In the future world where the Oculus Rift exists, a lot of these sim games that people are building these big setups with multiple monitors, etc, become much easier to create the immersion without quite so complicated a setup.

Really hoping that it works out.

The problem with Oculus Rift is that's completely immersive. A big part of sim'ing is interacting with real world physical controls, both for immersion and for quick decisive action.

I was thinking of the wheel still being involved, just having the monitors replaced. Just imagine looking down into the car and seeing inside the car seamlessly.

Yeah, but my wheel has multiple buttons, a d-pad, and an analog stick/rotary encoder. I'm adding in a button box shortly as well, in the meantime I'm using a keyboard in an optimized position. For flightsim'ing you'd have a HOTAS or yoke littered with toggles, hats, and rotaries. I'm excited for the Rift, I just don't think it'll be a good solution for sim'ing and from what I've seen on SimHQ and the like that seems to be the standard stance currently. Maybe there will be some magic combination of Oculus Rift, Leap Motion, and some sort of tactile glove that be absolutely amazing.

Oh, I'm sure there are people who are like what you describe. I understand that, even. But my argument would be that that market is much smaller than the market that might get the OR for more general use that might also use it to race, fly, etc.

I'm in the second category that doesn't have the space for a full cockpit, but might occasionally get a wheel out and use with something like the OR.

I could also see something like the OR with a viewing port on the bottom that would let you still see your keyboard/controllers.

Yeah, for a segment of simming, this would be very cool. In fact, I think I could use all my controls just by feel now anyway...well except for the HOTAS Warthog.

Welp...I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna wait until I get home and not buy it on my work computer, but I'm going to be a proud Obutto R3volution gaming rig owner

On that note....anyone in the East TN area that wants a PVC sim rig?

Just saw your iRacing ad. You might try putting it in your club forum too.

[Edit] Oh my... So who wants [disturbing] custom molded grips?

IMAGE(http://i.imgur.com/P0ZJter.jpg)

WTF? Dildo handles? Even funnier that it is the mostly non-functional T500 F1 wheel.

Horrifying!

The guy used Sugro to make custom molded grips for his hands. He was apparently very indignant about the ensuing commentary.

So it sounds like Mountaineer will be back up and running before long. Do we want to start a GWJ iRacing league?

I smell gas fumes.... Someone talking about racing around here?

He lives!

I have a few of you from the old iRacing thread, but my account is under Will Ernst.

I'm definitely down for that!

IT IS DONE!
