How's work been?

I had a good day today. I was just in the office doing review and case progression stuff, but that means mp3 player on, breaks when I choose, and a defined finish time. I got loads done too. The rest of the week should go the same way, but I'm sure that something will come up to screw it (and me).

Yep, it rocks to be me right now...

I'm in the same boat if it makes you feel any better. I love where I live, but I simply can't find a job. Apparently the southern Maine area is ripe with unemployed programmers.

No, it goes from God, to Kane, to Seth, and he has a task for you.

I have no idea why I can remember a cutscene from more than 15 years ago.

That's an interesting tidbit. Can you give me the particulars of this issue? Because we have one and it's been up for about half that now but if i tell my CTO just what you said here he's not going to take it well.

One of our switches went dark last Saturday and needed a reboot. The other died yesterday and needed the same. Checking the logs it appears that the last time they were each booted was 2054 days ago, which we're treating as the smoking gun. We can't find any info on that being a known fault and, breaking it down to days/hours/minutes/seconds it doesn't hit any obvious power-of-two breakpoint that would suggest a buffer clocked over or something similar.

Got a job working at Tim Horton's again after doing it for 3 years. Really loving the people I'm working with. On my first day my boss actually said "If you're ever in trouble with rent, just ask me and I'll lend you a couple hundred dollars". WTF!? Talk about a dream boss.

Also, last night one of the cooks from Earls came in for a sandwich, we talked briefly about job history and he said "If you're interested, come over to Earls and talk with me". So I guess I was basically offered a cook position, or invited to apply at least. Not sure if I want to go for it as I like my current job. It would probably be better pay and more stressful. I would likely keep my current job though and am not sure if I want to work two jobs.

My supervisor is awesome and let me go home with half a dozen cookies, a few croissants, a few danishes, and a sandwich all for free. I'm lucky my metabolism is as high as it is.

Though it's more for the dating thread, a good looking server from Earls also came into the store and according to my supervisor was checking me out.

So ya, typical minimum wage job is actually feeling pretty awesome right now.

I remember when I had a pair of E15Ks rebooting every 17 minutes and 10 seconds. It took me, the Project Manager, to explain to the tech team that this was 1024 seconds and that maybe you should look down that path. Turned out to be one of the HA clustering timeout values.

On the last half hour of a 12-hour overnight shift. I work in a radiology department at a local hospital, running the CT scanner. And man, it has been an incredibly slow night. I have done essentially 40 minutes of work all night. The rest of that time? Two words: Netflix Instant. It's not always like this, though; there are nights where I barely have time to sit and eat. I get drunk patients, often still in their soiled clothes and smelling like they've never seen the inside of a bath tub. I get sick, elderly, angry, puking, and generally people in some seriously bad states. But at the moment, I'm getting paid to watch Dirty Jobs, so it's a good night.

Thanks for the details. I sent them on and he says he's looking into it. So I figure about three years from now I'll get to remind him.

Had an "interview" at a recruiter today and took a Java test. Bear in mind, I'm an Android developer who is only in there to go through them to get an interview at a place looking for a person to be their lead Android guy. The Java test had a large percentage of the questions about Enterprise NetBeans, CORBA, and even console-oriented crap or, to put it differently, sh*t I've never been exposed to nor imagine I ever will be. *sigh*

So my receptionist just turned in her two week notice, mid phone upgrade mind you. But i don't particularly mind that she's a great kid but makes some basic mistakes and doesn't take constructive advice very well. Training a new receptionist is relatively easy and i've run this place solo before for 2-3 months while i had a receptionist in the hospital for chronic health issues.

Is it wrong of me that once she's gone i want to hire a hipster to fill her shoes? I feel that the general hipster aesthetic and mind set would work well in my work environment as long as she can get the job done.

I'm sure there's a way to do typecasting when hiring so that it's legal.
Wrong? Nah.
Legal? IANAL, but I think spinnable.

As long as any applicant meets the minimum expectations of the job i'm given free reign on who to hire at my location, so if one of them is a cute hipster chick (ideally demon hipster chick, or Faye) then i'm set.

I wish my receptionist would quit. She's been a nightmare from day one and is a carry over from the previous management. She's an attention seeking clock watcher that has to be explicitly told to do something before she will. On top of that she's just been diagnosed with Hepatitis, so now I'd feel like a complete jerk getting rid of her and she'd leverage it for an unfair dismissal claim.

I spent 7 years working in the advertising industry and without exception the hipster receptionists at every bloody hipper-than-thou agency I had to deal with were a useless shower of c**ts. Give me a Corrie-watching middle-aged mum any day. If you just want something pretty to look at you'll get better value with a good receptionist and a Suicide Girls subscription.

I would suggest getting a receptionist that is friendly and pleasing to just be around. We've had a couple of our younger receptionists leave (one got a job related to her degree and the other got his law degree and was moved to our legal department) and the two girls that they got to replace them are horrible at what they do. We have some older ladies that used to run the main receptionist area and they were great. You walk in, they would chat you up, just overall friendly people. But they decided to put the younger girls (who used to be mail room messengers) in the main area and its just difficult to get anything out of them. They aren't social, take forever transferring calls, when a call doesn't go through because someone isn't at their desk, the older ladies are the ones taking care of it by pretty much saying that so-and-so is away/the calendar shows that they're off until whatever date or in a meeting, "would you like to just leave a voicemail", etc. These young girls don't do any of that. I say young, they're probably about my age :-/

Maybe I'm being too hard on them and got spoiled with the other receptionists. Maybe they just don't like me and it shows with their service. I don't know.

I guess i should have clarified there is no way i'm going to hire someone that doesn't have those qualifications i have to sit next to them when i'm at my own desk (cubicle wall partition) and i will not let anyone represent my company that can't do that.

I'm just hoping i can get the whole package of relatively smart/nice/cute/hipster. Shouldn't be hard in LA Plenty of young actresses.

God i really need to stop hitting alt+S to try and send these posts like their outlook e-mail.

I sell jeans. That's what the head of our organization tells us at around this time of the year.

In real life, I'm helping a large retail company sell jeans and other things online by wearing many hats in development and infrastructure group. So far today (noon), I've had 5 (short) meetings, 2 hours of actual keyboard time and 3 frantic phone calls about some new stores being setup. Later today, I will be working on optimizing F5 LTM iRules, arguing with developers and fielding questions from the configuration management team.

It hasn't been too bad at work this week but that is just barely making up for last month.

I've been working 10+ hour days since last wednesday. I'm really tired and I've been neglecting my wife and the IGWJD event just because I seem to fall asleep right when I get home, wake up and go back to work.

So I got fired from the job I took to spite my former employer. Short version, the CEO/Owner of the company and I did not get along. We didn't fight per se but I would not play his little games when he was belittling my co-workers. Two weeks later I had a new job but most of it consisted of lying to customers and I wasn't really doing much other than customer relations, which I hated but was the only one in the office that was good at it without a VP title.

Oddly, an upper manager from the job I got fired from found out I was looking. I took a contract position and now I am currently waiting for conversion to full time status. I'm full-time project management but I have a great rapport with the customers I deal with. The sales team loves me, the managers love me, and they're talking about bringing me on into a higher position once the conversion to full-time takes effect. In the meantime I am the de facto project management trainer for our office. I'm also the only project manager in our office currently doing two simultaneous projects. They are going to put me on a career track for Operations Manager but that will take a couple of years. All-in-all, it is going well.

Wow, Botswana, long time no see.

Been out of work for 2 weeks due to family issues. Going back tomorrow, but this will be the beginning of the end. My job will only last 2 more weeks(as were the conditions when I was hired), and even though they've asked me to stay on for the winter to do other work for them I'll be accepting the termination for more important things. It's been a great summer, and I feel like I've helped some folks work out some issues. It will be a cold and wet few weeks outdoors, but this is my favorite time of year to be outside as it reminds me of traipsing around the mountains of western Montana chasing deer and elk with my brother and father.

I'm definitely approaching another transition point in my....career/life. We'll see what's up next.

Yeah, the financial meltdown really hurt those of us working with banks. Forza 4's car club brought me back to GWJ. Oh, I had wimpy cancer to.

Got to work yesterday at 9am... worked straight till 5am with about 45 for lunch and 45 for dinner break. back on site by 8:30am to troubleshoot more problems.

but on the upside got a call from my boss exclaiming dismay that i was there so late with the rest of the IT team and told me to take a day off sometime next week when we can afford the down time.
Also apparently they don't like me helping out college film crews by letting them film on my site for little money and some film credits to help make their lives easier. ( i honestly wasn't planning on clocking in and just turning over the check to the corporate) Ah well no matter still gonna do it

I was going to kvetch about my job, but then I saw everything everyone else posted. I love how other people's anecdotes have a way of putting things in perspective.

Oh and Cayne, you're a workaholic in the making, probably because you enjoy your job so much. I can see why you'd want to spruce up the place with some eye candy.

Melanoma on a limp wrist?

My work has signed a contract with another company to take over all tier 2 computer support. The new company wants me to continue working as a contractor in the same desk doing the exact same job I've done for nearly 4 years now. I'll find out what they're offering me next week.

So here's my LinkedIn page!

I thought Melanoma was the kind that killed you. Basal Cell Carcinoma.

Why does the minor cancer sound deadly and the deadly kind sound like a sleep aid?

I'm on vacation this week so things are pretty sweet!

This is coming of working 144 hours of overtime last month so it was well deserved.

Also after the phone install tomorrow night, i've got a 6-3 film shoot on Saturday, followed by a 6-6 film shoot on Sunday.
