ICO and Shadow of the Colossus (SotC) Collection Catch-All

These two games are in my top 5 games of all time list. Uncharted 2 and Half Life 2 are in there, too. Haven't really thought about what the 5th one is.

Anyway, our very own Mystic Violet created a perler bead piece for me that is one of the greatest gifts I've ever received.

That is at least nineteen entirely separate kinds of awesome, skeletonframes. My jealousy is unbounded.

It's quite something isn't it? Mystic is one talented mofo.

That's awesome.

Word on the street is X-Men Destiny is five hours and sub-par. I'll still play it, and a friend of mine plans on grabbing it, but this means I'll be grabbing Ico/Colossus instead.

SotC is f*cking frustrating. "Stay on him, you stupid son of a bitch!", as my guy was flung free for about the eightieth time. About ready to strangle someone.

Back to Ico.

For the other new people out there... don't try to use a NA FAQ/video to help you past any parts. This collection is based off of the PAL version that had some parts improved/changed.

I wasted 10 minutes trying to figure out what to do to turn off the waterfall while the FAQ made it sound so simple. So then I checked a video and noticed the area looked a little different. Then found an EU playthrough video, which showed the correct solution.

I'm really tempted to pick this up, mainly for Ico. A friend of mine gave me Shadow of the Colossus for the PS2, but I have yet to get around to it, so I think the benefit in that regard would be the HD visuals. It wouldn't be the first time I've gotten a game I already own. *cough* Metroid Prime Trilogy when I already owned MP1 and MP2.

No y-axis flip on the camera?! Seriously?!

I'm still playing but... damn... every time I try to move the camera it screws me up.

That is annoying for someone who flips Y axis on every game. I also read elsewhere that they left Y axis flip off of the Splinter Cell collection too. :-(

For Ico, it's not that critical.

For Splinter Cell, it's beyond unforgivable. Allegedly a patch may be forthcoming. I am holding off on a purchase until one materializes.

And even then, I'm only buying it because the PC versions (of the first one at least) don't support gamepads, else I was just going to hook my laptop up to my TV and play 'em that way. (And apparently Pandora Tomorrow is a complete mess on modern NVIDIA cards).

Splinter Cell is too good of a series to not be preserved perfectly. I am disappoint.

That's what I remember most about SotC and why I never finished it.

Back to Ico.

Which one are you on? Staying on the colossi can be a bit tricky sometimes. Often, you just need to be patient. Learn when and where it's safe to just let go and stand on them while your grip recovers.

Some of them took a while to beat, but the only one that ever made me put the controller down in frustration was that damn tiny one. He was a jerkface.

Yeah. The little bubble-gum looking bubble is your grip meter. Not sure if the game points that out. I saw the Giantbomb Quick Look and they seemed to have forgotten about the grip meter, too.

And ICO is finished. A little over 5 hours on the clock.

That was weird. But fun. Very interested in NG+ so that I can know what Yorda was saying. I feel like that would clear things up a bit.

I definitely had fun. Not many complaints. A couple of puzzles irked me because of brightness settings, either the game or my tv. Couldn't see a switch or a path that I was supposed to use. Also there was a very long drought of save couches for the final section of the game. Pretty frustrating, and I had to leave the game paused to break for dinner since I couldn't save for such a long time.

Has anyone confirmed ahrezmendi's post on the last page, that there is local co-op for this? I suppose I can just turn on a 2nd controller and find out. But I think my wife might enjoy seeing this. She just caught a bit of the final boss fight and credits and seemed mildly interested at least.

Got it! I loved these games, but SotC was a bit ambitious for the PS2 hardware. HD and silky smooth frame rates are soooo nice.

For those frustrated by SotC... one thing that didn't kick in for me for a while the first time around was that it's all about timing and observing both the monster and your character very closely. There are very subtle clues as to how good a grip the character has. For instance, don't try to stab until he's planted both feet. Otherwise you're likely to lose your balance if the critter shakes.

Not everything is spelled out for you in that tiny HUD.

Also, shoot arrows at the silver-tailed lizards...they increase your grip meter.

Oh so I wasn't the only one yelling at them about this?

Also, I picked my copy up from the bad neighbor hood Gamestop near my work (Seriously, it has a spoken announcement that plays whenever somebody opens the door saying that they have cameras taping everything for our safety.)

I played a bit of SotC and it does look significantly prettier then the original version.

No the game had some nice tutorial type popups for controls. How to jump, grip, attack, ride your horse, etc. But nothing about the grip meter and health meter.

Something in the manual about fruit to increase health and lizards to increase grip. Guess I need to check a FAQ and find some of those.

3 colossi in so far, and having fun. But died on the first due to not knowing what the hell I was doing.

I read this as silver-tainted. Not sure what to do with that.

ARGH! You guys are killing me! I can't wait 'til friday to replay these!!!

I picked this up today, will hopefully get into it later in the week. I never had a PS2 (I know), so it will be nice to visit these classics.

5 Colossi down... story spoilers...

Spoiler:

A little worried about these spirit things that seem to attack me after each colossus goes down. And then are standing around me all creepy-like when I wake up back at the temple. Not really sure this is going to end well. Although any quest to revive the dead is pretty much doomed from the start.

Enabling indeed. I don't even have a PS3. Sad face.

Hmmm... I may have to borrow my friend's and buy the game.

Never played on my PS2, but pretty cool on this new edition for PS3. The ambiance and music really is nice. Haven't gotten far (I C O).

Yyyyyyup.

Not really a spoiler unless you didn't read Stele's comment:

Spoiler:

Pay close attention to the appearance of your character as you take down more colossi.

5 hours? That's perfect! I may have to pick these up sooner than later.

I don't have this collection (yet) but, I just want to say that this thread warms the cockles of my bitter video-game heart.

Yup.

Spoiler:

Right around Colossi 5 or 6 is when I started to question whether I was the good guy or bad guy. I love that f+ckin game.

After doing so, I think you have to then pick up and eat the tail. You can also find fruit hanging from some trees that increases your health. I'm not sure if I got that info from a FAQ or the manual, but it really helps. I think there might eventually be a way to make your map show where remaining lizards/fruit are.

Those tips are in the manual, that the two things exist and what they do. And I have seen lots of lizards, but I don't think any silver ones yet. Shot down some fruit from trees.

Not until you beat the game once, though. After that, you can do time attack mode, which earns you various equippable items. Among them are ones that will show the locations of white-tailed lizards and fruit trees.

Psst. If you stopped selling your machines so quickly, you'd still have one...

Finally got it today... I'm a bit disappointed that the interesting commentary stuff is locked behind the PSN and its T&C changes all the time. I feel that it should have been on the blu-ray..

Other than that i love the new HD and widescreen look to the game. Haven't tried "full pixel" properly yet as it appears to cut off some of the screen for me...
