Android Games Catch-All

It's ad-supported. A pay version is supposed to be out soon.

Yeah, sorry, saw that when I installed it. The ads are pretty unobtrusive though. Kudos to Rovio for that.

I picked up the Samsung Captivate (i.e. AT&T's version of the Galaxy S) this weekend. Love it. For the first time ever, I can see why people get so fired up about mobile phones.

In any case, I went onto the marketplace to try and install angry birds. Couldn't find it, and believe me I searched. Next I tried AppBrain, which flagged the game for install but whenever I try to sync appbrain with my phone, it tells me it can't find the app to install.

Am I missing something here? The app doesn't seem to be available for me. How do all you guys have access to it?

I found it on the marketplace.
I searched for "angry birds". It was the third hit on the list, right under "Angry Birds Lite Beta" and right above "Angry Birds Clock Widget".

From their e-mail they sent me on Friday announcing the release:

IT’S HERE. AND IT’S FREE. After an extended period of beta testing, Rovio is proud to present Angry Birds for the Android platform. First of all, we’d like to thank you for your patience.

Why is Angry Birds free on Android? We want to make Angry Birds available for as many people as possible. Previously, many people were experiencing problems in finding Angry Birds on Android Market, but now everybody can download the game on their device.

Personally, it took a week for the Lite Beta to show up on my phone in the marketplace (Verizon Droid original) and with the full version, I was surprised that it actually showed up same day in the Market for me.

Yah, neither "Angry Birds Lite Beta" or "angry birds" shows up on my marketplace. Do different providers have different marketplaces?

Edit ... I figured out how to install through appbrain. It was confusing but I finally got it. Thanks.

What an amazingly entertaining game. Love angry birds.

I can't get Angry Birds to install on my Nexus One running Cyanogen 6. I never got the beta to install either. Anyone know a place where I can get the .apk? I'm not sure what else to try.

Yeah I wasted entirely too much time on it the last few days.

Go here:
http://www.getjar.com/mobile/43600/a...

Then:
Click the orange 'Download App' button on the right.
Follow the instructions to set your phone.
(You may have to click the download app button again)
In the the pop up box click the 'download this application to your computer' link on the right hand side.

Subscribing.

Apparently "Cut the Rope" is making the port to Android soon too.

Picked up Angry Birds. It's pretty fun. Is the pay version worth it?

I think it's the same game, minus the ads..

And another world.

Very fun game. I think it is every bit as good as Angry Birds.

Reckless Racing - rampaging rednecks.

If you like Plants vs Zombies you should try
Leave Devil Alone
Pay Version

It is a Plants VS Zombies type game. Lots of stuff borrowed from PvZ but there are other elements like magic. Your rage meter fills and you can cast spells. I grabbed the free version yesterday and am enjoying it so far.

You can also try PvZ which is a complete rip-off of Plants vs Zombies and may upload personal data to the developer. May. (there is some question if it does)

Anyway, they're both a decent replacement for Plants VS Zombies and quite fun. Of the two Leave Devil Alone is my preference.

I just purchased the full version of Leave Devil Alone. Played the first four levels and decided it was enough fun to spend $4.99. I feel it's a little pricey (should be $2.99 IMO) but $2 isn't that much more than $3.

Interview with Popcap about Android development.

Sounds like PvZ and Bejewelled will be early 2011.

And it's unsaid in there, but I bet the Win Phone 7 support was pretty easy as MS's made porting things from XBLA (or at least XNA) quite easy. And I bet MS's development people pushed and helped them get on the platform, either financially or with a lot of technical development support.

I can also recommend (well recommend is probably overstating it)
Kamikaze Race
and
City Jump

Both are an interesting take on the Mega Jump (iphone)/Hyper Jump(Android) concept. You have to survive as long as you can while you progress up the screen while it gets harder and harder. City Jump is probably the better of the two, neither is fabulous but they are both fun and mildly diverting.

Hey folks,

If anyone wants to help me beta test a game I wrote, please see this thread. Thanks, sorry for spamming (not really).

May not be news to anyone here, but I just found this pretty nice site: http://www.droidgamers.com
Handy reviews and videos and things.

Thanks, Mixolyde. I'll check it out. Hopefully they borrow liberally from Touch Arcade.

As a follow up to all chess sperging I did last page, I paid the ~$8.50 for Shredder (one of most well-known engines and applications for PC) only to find out that there's not really $8.50 worth of app there. I ended up returning it to the app store, thank goodness for the 24-hour policy.

Just got my first smartphone, a Droid 2.... I dont typically game much, but emulation has always interested me. I'm going to have to figure this whole emulation thing out now. There seem to be quite a few emulators on the marketplace... are they mostly the same?

thanks,
mark

I just go for the "oids". SNESoid, NESoid, Gameboid, umm... genesisoid I think. Nope, Gensoid. And I just have the lite versions, I'm not saving and loading states, I just save the game like I would if I were playing it on the system.

I did try another all-in-one emulator, but I didn't think it was nearly as good as the oid versions.

I ponied up for the full versions of Gensoid and Gameboid, and they're pretty darn awesome. Work great.

Yeah those -oid versions are really solid. I would stick with those lite versions as well. Using my wii remote I can bluetooth with my phone and control the games with the Wii remote, for NES/GBA titles, or the classic controller for SNES/Genesis. Pretty great.

Reminds me, now that I have a PS3, I should try that bluetooth, I'm sure there's something that syncs with the phone.

Stele, when do you use your Wii remote? When you are at home playing a game on your cell phone, or do you take your Wii remote with you out of the house?

Mostly I just used it at home trying it out. It's not like I haven't played the heck out of most of these old games for years already.

But I did bring a Wiimote along with me for my home Thanksgiving trip. Being away from my desktop PC and all my library, but having tons of games on my phone is pretty damn convenient.
