Well, I didn't expect to enjoy that one as much as I did.

3am came around quickly after I gave it a "5 minute shot" after finishing work last night.

Do we have a GWJ 'group' as I think I unlocked that some time last night? Not sure of the exact wordage (clan, alliance, conglomerate) as I ran the battery flat on my tablet otherwise I'd look it up

Hurray! Another player!

I don't believe we have a group. However, with the way clan events work, it seems better to stick to an already established, near-full clan to reap maximum rewards. If we could get 30 GWJers in, I'd love to! Otherwise, best to co-ordinate with clans are open and join accordingly.

It's in name only, but I think I'm in some Australian group. Really is no different. If you're interested, I'll grab the title for you so you can request an invite.

Rocket Valley Tycoon seems like it's up GWJ's alley. I haven't played much, but it mixes a bit of factorio with an incremental game.

Factorio? On my phone? You just said the magic words!

I'm looking for a decent base or city building sim on tablet. Something premium ideal. Play before you pay one off IAP absolutely fine. FTP with horrendous mega IAP diamonds for 5x build speed style no thank you. Lots of waiting, boo.

Something involved, decent scale with plenty of organising and making things look good.

Any recommendations appreciated. Ta.

I think there's a thread for this style game somewhere? Not sure and probably pc focused?

Pocket Build is something I recently installed. Still haven't fired it up. Sandboxy.

TheoTown is great. It's basically SimCity 2000.

We have a city builder thread, but it's largely pc-based, but that's because the genre is largely pc-based.

Thanks, I'll give TheoTown a go, have checked out its store page before now but it's IAP £0.89 up to £149.99 put me off.

I just found and caught up on the last couple pages of the builder thread and spotted your recommendation there too, so will give it the benefit of the doubt.

Pocket Build looks pretty and at 1.99, no iap it fits the brief, maybe... though the user reviews not brilliant.

Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition launches on February 9th

Gematsu has reported that Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition will finally launch on Android on February 9th. That’s a bit later than the predicted winter 2017 launch, but we’ll take it.

Pocket Edition promises to deliver a Chibi version of Final Fantasy XV that remains as close to the original experience as possible. If Square Enix can pull it off, it will be an impressive feat.

I'll laugh if I complete the pocket game before the real one.

It's only a little like Factorio. More like a hex-grid version of Railroad Tycoon with incremental upgrades to buildings. After a week or so of tinkering with it (and not making it off the first planet, yet), my general impressions are
* Love the art style and general gameplay loop
* The transport mechanics are not completely explained in the tutorial and some experimentation is needed to figure out how stuff will move.
* The constant invitations to watch ads to speed up some things is annoying, but not essential to progress
* I love train network games, and this is mostly a train network game
* There is a very strong "just-one-more-turn" feel to the game as you constantly want to upgrade your resource chains

I will probably keep playing it for a while. It's an interesting optimization game and has some legs.

What did you find about the transport mechanics? It seems like you're supposed to put a train station next to every node, but that doesn't feel right.

I noticed that trains scooting along the tracks were passing along goods even when they weren't at Stations. If you click the ? button in the upper right and read the Trains page it actually confirms that. (I had thought it was a bug at first).

Edit: And while I'm here, thanks a lot for the recommendation! This is a really great game for me right now. I've been wanting a persistent simmy sort of thing, but one with actual gameplay mechanics, not the sort of "city builder" you usually see on mobile where you basically just plop down different art assets that make money with no interaction with anything else on the board.

It turns out that trains will auto-load and unload from rail tiles as well as they go by nodes. So you can make a thread of rail and put nodes on the sides and they will work, assuming the train is going in the right direction. Also nodes will automatically deliver to other nodes that are directly next to them without the need of a train, including the city node. I have been experimenting with a couple of different layout strategies to find something that works well and looks nice. So far my favorite is a sort of large heart shape with a station next to the city node, then another station further out and two curves of track that connect them.
Also, it's not in the tutorial, but there is a bulldozer icon in the bar at the bottom. I have occasionally used it to move stuff around and create spurs off my rail to dedicated resource stations.

In theory great and just what was after, but way too fiddly on the smallish nexus tablet.

Ended up just starting a new Fallout vault, haven't played since shelter released, ok for a few days. Might start Rebuild 3 again...

Yeah, can be tough, but I powered through it and play the game on my phone.

Fair play to you. I couldn't do it, was doing my head in.

I might just download SimCity 2000 on the Mac though - for one whole pound!

This month's Humble Mobile Bundle seems pretty good. I was about to get A Galaxy of Pen and Paper anyway, and the other ones have been on my radar.

Damn it Humble.

FFXV won't install on my Nexus 6P as it says it's incompatible as not meeting the specs, which is a bunch of bologna.

I'm kinda curious about FFXV. I hated the simple battle system, but I think it could lend itself well to mobile gaming. Holding an attack or defend button feels much more like a mobile gaming design choice than it does an AAA one. It may be one way for me to actually finish that game.

Spoiler:

Sorry, I'm still a grumpy old FF fan, but my curiosity is honest

Speaking of FF, Tactics got an update with a bunch of fixes that fixed quick saves, so you can now switch apps and come right back to where you were in battle. Makes it a lot easier to play on the go, and at traffic lights.
I got a new phone recently so I started up a new game again. So much better when you can get in and out quickly, like closing a DS.

Oooooh, that's good to know. Might have to reinstall.

Perfect! Gonna keep my eye on any sales!

Anyway, guess who just got a shiny new Galaxy S8! Does anyone have suggestions for games to really push this new hardware to its limits? I'm already incredibly impressed by how smooth some old favourites run. Hearthstone runs better than on my PC!

Rules of Survival, a pretty good PUBG clone is a great graphics pusher. Lineage 2 is a very pretty Korean style MMORPG, and Order & Chaos 2 is a pretty WoW clone.

Maybe Vainglory or Arena of Valor if you like MOBAs (blech).

The X-Com port is aging a little, but is an amazing game, so go for that, too,

I really struggle with games that require complex input on a touch screen. I'll check out Rules of Survival, but probably only to see the pretty graphics (I'm shocked just how similar it looks to PUBG, no shame!). I've been curious about Lineage 2 for a while but forgot about it! I've heard some very mixed reviews, but I really like non-idle games I can put on "auto-pilot" mode.

Hasn't someone been raving about one of these on the podcast? I can't remember which one! I'm curious.

X-Com

Oh wow I forgot about this. Love me some X-COM. I also noticed KOTOR is available! This new screen should be juuust big enough (I hope!)

Thanks!

I'm still playing The Alchemist Code. I've never been so grabbed by a f2p garbage gacha game before. I don't spend much money on it (there's a monthly pack for $6), but I still really enjoy it. FF tactics style combat, though it's very easy and then ramps up to very hard (because they want you to invest heavily in different units to do it).

Anyway, it's fun if anybody is looking for a throwaway gacha. The waifu anime garbage is there a bit, but is less offensive than I've seen in a lot of this stuff. (It was more noticeable around Valentine's day).

I've actually been looking for a Gacha. My long-term love of DC Legends is still strong, but the sloooow method of farming up shards for characters is leaving me with a desire to just open packs and hope I get something fun. Long-time TCG player, so I don't know, I just like opening boosters and getting that nice little rush of excitement.

Downloading now!

Edit: Yeah I know I talk about it a lot, but I had no idea there was a neat trailer:

Oh cool. Let me know how you like it. I'm currently playing that and the mobile game that came alongside Shadow of War.

After getting tired of SWGOH's hero release model and bouncing off Summoners War, I started playing a new gacha called King's Raid. It looks like it's about a year old, but it's quite generous as far as payment models go and you can legitimately farm stuff without too much issue. Also there's a "auto repeat" option which is wonderful, so I can farm a specific node for 10 minutes and not have to click on buttons to re-fight every time.

Note: it has anime graphics with overly endowed female characters if that isn't your thing.

This sounds like you’re advertising a multi-level marketing scam. -dee

Interesting, I'm guessing that feeds "times downloaded" for the paying app on its title page? And maybe gives them money for adds running in the app?

Actually somewhat curious/tempted. Normally wouldn't touch something like that, but if a fellow GWJer recommends it, hey, why not? Maybe it could give me some "free" IAPs. Would you mind sending me a PM with the referral?
