Android Games Catch-All

I got the first paid app for my phone, the Chess application by Mobialia. I tried the free versions of lots and lots of chess programs for Android, and this one was what I ended up with. Well worth 1.99 pounds (two dollars and change) if you like chess. It has one the best interfaces I've used in an Android chess client and also lets you export .pgn files of your games. You can also play on FICS.

I just use it for play against the computer as I have the free chess.com application for online challenges. I can't say enough about that app either, so here's links to both!

Chess.com for my phone? Think I'll be playing more games now.

2D Boom Blox!

This is pretty cool:

I got my Nexus 1 on friday. I've got most of my standard apps that I had on the iPhone but the games are a bit lacking so far. I upgraded to 2.2 Froyo so some games aren't working with 2.2, yet but I hope they will soon. Anyway, a few I've found to be fun:

World Series of Poker - Not quite as nice as Apples Texas Hold 'em but pretty good. Graphics are good and the gameplay is fun. Overall polish is pretty high compared to most of the things I've seen so far on Android. One of the main things I miss is the ability to force a hand to finish once you fold.

Word Drop - Sort of like Boggle and scrabble. Similar to Fire Words or Bookworm. Graphics are okay.

Galaxy Domination - like Galactic Civilizations but pretty stripped down. Graphics are pretty basic and there are few options. Compares best to the first version of GalCiv but really basic.

Sky Force Reloaded - Fun top down shooter with decent graphics. Pretty polished game.

Super KO Boxing 2 - Nice graphics and the interface is decent. Like punch-out but I found it even more difficult than Punch Out for the Wii with the balance board. I got frustrated enough to return it. Too bad since it is a very nicely polished game that could be a lot of fun.

Robo Defense - Decent tower defense. Sound is passable but overall not very good. Decent variety of towers. Graphics are okay. Overall, though, it makes me wish for Field Runners on the iPhone.

Boogers vs. Goobers - Simple graphics, decent sound. Worms/Scorched Earth game. One odd thing is that when you shoot something that hits the top of the screen it just stops there and travels straight across the screen. Not bad and I see potential.

Battle For Mars is a fairly fun Advance Wars clone. It's got interface problems and extremely simple gameplay, but if you need a turn-based strategy fix it will do the job.

Armored Strike Online is a Worms/Scorched earth type game. I picked it up last night and I like it a lot better than Boogers vs Goobers. Graphics, sound, and general gameplay is better. It also has an online component which I have not tried yet. You can play vs up to 4 opponents.

One thing I find odd about android is that even if I have my phone set to vibrate games still play sound. Kind of annoying. I think they should be muted if the phone is muted.

Yeah, there are separate volume controls for Media Volume and Ringtone Volume.

Flight Director is probably better

So is there any safe way to upgrade to 2.2 on a Nexus One yet? I've heard people were having problems with the version that Google accidentally released.

EDIT: Oops, this probably should have gone into the other Android thread.

Ontopic: The only game I have really enjoyed on android so far is Drop7. Anything else worth playing? The thing I miss most about my iPhone is geoDefense Swarm. If that was available on an iPad I'd have to buy one. (please don't tell me that if it is)

nothing to see here

I've tried Retro Defense and Spira Defense but neither are as exciting looking as geoDefense.

I've seen Robo Defense, Crystallight Defense and Bubble defense mentioned elsewhere but couldn't tell you what they are like.

Crystallight Defense has a demo.

DF7 I've upgraded to 2.2 and haven't had any issues. I did it Friday night. Three people I know have also upgraded without issues. I do know that Google pulled that file, though. I found it on some mirrored places, though.

No love for Tower Raiders? It's a lot better than Robo Defense. It's more like a mini version of Defense Grid.

I recently got a Motorola Droid and have come to the conclusion that it is being under-utilized. One thing that turned me off about games on the ipod touch was the less than precise controls for games like Zenonia (I found the script to be its biggest detriment) and was wondering if any of the droid ports of games or apps utilize the physical keyboard like a controller? I'm especially thinking about the emulators of the NES and SNES. Any input would be appreciated, thanks!

Funnily enough I just completed Zenonia on my Desire and didn't find the on screen d-pad a problem at all. I quite liked the script, there were plenty of 'breaking-the-fourth-wall' bits of humour about the genre in there. All-in-all a fun little game but I thought although the last 1 or 2 temples required a bit too much pointless grinding in the same rooms.

I think the nesoid and snesoid emulators can map inputs to keys but don't quote me on that, you could always buy it and get the uninstall refund if they don't.

drop7 may well be the most addictive game on the planet.

What about Dungeon Hunter?

Alchemy is a cool non action game.

Looks cool, just tried to buy it; not available via the market so I paid via their website. They send you a link to download the .apk for the game. Installed it, then the game installed about 150Meg of data on my SD card. Then when it tried to run it repeatedly crashed eventually causing my phone to reboot. So just in case, I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall, on attempting to run it again it just throws an errors stating that "this is not an original copy of Dungeon Hunter". I have emailed to get a refund.

Hmm, looks like they are only supporting it on the Motorola Droid. That sucks.

In other news, this is pretty cool:

Playstation Emulator coming for Android

Well the purchase process asks which phone you have so as it let me select the game for the Desire I figured it would work.

Also subscribing.

I like two games right now... PapiRiver and PapiJump... PapiJump is available on Pre as something else... I forgot the name.

They are both super simple games.

Apparently it should work on my phone, they have sent me that files again but it still force closes and causes my phone to reboot. Shame, I quite liked the look of dungeon hunter and a couple of their other games.

In their favour their tech/customer support has been quick and good thus far.

Do you have anything else running in the background while trying to run DH? Maybe there's some sort of conflict?

Nope.
