Android Games Catch-All

Pages

I appreciate that this may die the death but has anyone played any good Android games yet? I'm currently running an HTC Desire and had the old HTC G1 for ages.

**** 9th Sept 2010: AS REQUESTED I HAVE UPDATED THE TOP POST WITH ALL THE SUGGESTED GAMES (we were at page 15)***

Ok, here's everything everyone has suggested so far (I think), I've tried to put things into categories that make sense. Nevertheless Multiplayer and Arcade Action are catch alls for things that I couldn't think of a better category for. Where possible I've included the any one line summary people included.

In future it would be super awesome if people could include the android market or appbrain links for any game they suggest.

PUZZLE
Gem Miner:Dig Deeper: Genuinely awful and utterly boring resource management/exploration game. I really can't believe I bothered to complete a play through.
Drop 7
Trap! is kind of fun. Simple little puzzle / reflex / timing game. You have to isolate sections of the board without letting the bouncing balls hit your line as it's drawing. This is the game I pull up when I have 5 minutes to kill waiting somewhere.
Angry Birds stupidly popular smash the structures puzzler
Angry Birds Rio
Angry Birds Seasons
Alchemy combine objects to make other objects
Tetris err... tetrs
Bejeweled 2
Mechanics Touch lemmings style puzzler
Jewels Bejewled clone
Jewellust Bejewled clone
Blow Up
Space Physics
Everlands
Cut The Rope elegant gravity driven rope cutting puzzler
Airport Mania - Really nice little air traffic control/time management game. The difficulty curve is a little screwy in each world. Usually the first levels of each world are hardest but once you've bought all the airport upgrades the last levels in each world turn out to be really easy. That said getting all your planes moving in synchrony is really hypnotic and fun.
180
Walkabout - Quite a nicely presented little puzzle game, has a couple of interface niggles but I found it to be a pleasant pass time. Satisfying to complete the levels but I didn't find any of them to be especially hard.
QBism - lovely looking puzzle game. You have to slide cubes into place to build a shape in 3D which you only get the silhouette for. Like walkabout the interface can be niggly (rotating the blocks sometimes instead of moving them) and it is clearly optimised to work best on a tablet computer. Not too sure about the difficulty maybe I'm just very good at conceptualising 3D objects but I've not found a puzzle so far that hasn't been pretty obvious. YMMV
Burn the Rope- Burn rope patterns by tilting and rotating your phone. Fire only burns upward.

RPG
Zenonia Nice JRPG stlye rpg
Zenonia 2
Zenonia 3
Dungeon Hunter
Crusade of Destiny
Spectral Souls
Star Traders
Gurk tiny 8 bit style RPG
Gurk II excellent sequel to Gurk

RTS
BattleHeart Really nice RTS/RPG that plays like you're managing a mini-WoW raid

MMO
Parrallel Kingdom
Pocket Legends
Star Legends

SHMUP
XGalaxy 2: Galaxians clone, fairly hard and not especially noteworthy. Gets a bit bullet hell in places but perhaps that's more to do with running it on a much faster phone, seemed the previous version didn't seem as tough on the slower G1
Sky Force 16bit style shmup
Sky Force reloaded: Reworking of Sky Force. It's a pretty standard but well executed top down shmup a lot like being transported back to the 16Bit era. Not especially challenging unless you're on the hardest level.
EXZeus
Radiant Nice galaxians style thing
MiniSquadron! biplane shooter
MiniSquadron SE
Pirate Wings Pilot wings clone
Gun Bros
PewPew Good twin stick shooter
PewPew2
Guerllia Bob - Great looking but fairly linear twin stick shooter. Nice bit of fun, although can be fiddly on a small screen.
SILPHEED Alternative
AirAttack HD- 1943 with high-rez graphics.

FLIGHT SIM
Sky Siege
Skies of Glory
Armageddon Squadron

RACING
SpeedX 3D: Avoid-the-obstacles tunnel racer. Surprisingly addictive and much better executed than any reviews or screen shots suggest. I've only had it a couple of days and I've already played it longer than is healthy. Also how have people on the high score table scored such massive scores, does it run loads slower on the older Android phones?
Raging Thunder 2
Reckless Racing
Kamikaze Race
Need For Speed:Shift
Wave Blazer
Jet Car Stunts - Haven't played too much of this yet but seems great. I forget if someone already posted this.
Return Zero

PLATFORM
DynamoKid: Constantly scrolling procedurally generated platformer that plays a little like playing one of those constantly scrolling mario levels. Not especially noteworthy either but pretty addictive, like Buka if could benefit from some multitouch so you can make the kid jump and kill enemies at the same time.
Doodle Jump
Abduction!
City Jump
Mega Jump
Lame Castle
They Need to Be Fed - Gravity-driven platform/puzzle game.

ARCADE ACTION
Flight Frenzy: Obvious clone of the iphone's Flight Control. Bold cartoony graphics but the path finding/finger following isn't as good as it might be so occasionally it decides a drawn path leads to beside the landing point. You get 5 airports/maps. Pretty Ok I suppose.
Flight Director: A different clone of Flight Control. 7 real world airports/maps cribbed from google maps, 3 levels of difficulty, good path finding/following. There were plenty of frequent updates and extra maps. All in all I'd say it's better than Flight Control. The only irksome thing is that when it updates it clears your high scores.
Buka : strange, kind of asteroid clone, where you have to protect Buka from in-falling 'monsters' (read asteroids). Nice clean graphics and quickly gets pretty tough, would really benefit from being multi-touch enabled in the latest round of devices.
Air Control
Hungry shark
Death Worm - Essentially Tremors: The Game where you play as a Graboid.

STRATEGY
Age of Conquest
Uniwar
Galaxir
Galcon
Game Dev Story Manage a tiny game developers
Grand Prix Story Manage a grand prix team
Dark Galaxy Nova Wars
Majesty Manage a kingdom and the heroes within it
Xenowar
Steambirds - Steampunk WWII era turn-based air combat. Excellent multiplayer.

TOWER DEFENSE
Tower Raiders is a great little tower defense game. Definitely got my money's worth out of that one.
Retro Defense
Robo Defense - Decent tower defense. Sound is passable but overall not very good. Decent variety of towers. Graphics are okay. Overall, though, it makes me wish for Field Runners on the iPhone.
Crystallight Defense
Spira Defense
Field Runners HD
Sentinel 3

WORD GAMES
WordzUp!
Word Drop - Sort of like Boggle and scrabble. Similar to Fire Words or Bookworm. Graphics are okay.
Word Wise Pro
Words With Friends

CHESS
Chess by Mobialia
Chess.com
DroidFish
Chess by jwtc
Chess Free
AndroidKnight 3D Chess
Shredder Chess

CARD GAMES
World Series of Poker - Not quite as nice as Apples Texas Hold 'em but pretty good. Graphics are good and the gameplay is fun. Overall polish is pretty high compared to most of the things I've seen so far on Android. One of the main things I miss is the ability to force a hand to finish once you fold.

SPORTS
Super KO Boxing 2 - Nice graphics and the interface is decent. Like punch-out but I found it even more difficult than Punch Out for the Wii with the balance board. I got frustrated enough to return it. Too bad since it is a very nicely polished game that could be a lot of fun.
Homerun Battle 3D
Backbreaker Football

MULTIPLAYER
Boogers vs. Goobers - Simple graphics, decent sound. Worms/Scorched Earth game. One odd thing is that when you shoot something that hits the top of the screen it just stops there and travels straight across the screen. Not bad and I see potential.
Armored Strike Online is a Worms/Scorched earth type game. I picked it up last night and I like it a lot better than Boogers vs Goobers. Graphics, sound, and general gameplay is better. It also has an online component which I have not tried yet. You can play vs up to 4 opponents.
Cestos

BOARD/TABLE TOP
Catan
Carcassonne
Farkle

PINBALL
Pinball Deluxe
Pinball Yeah!

BEAT 'EM UP
X-men Arcade side scrolling brawler circa 1992

OTHER/TOOLS
Twisty - Z games interpreter
BlowTorch MUD client
SCUMMVM

I got a Desire recently too. Really great bit of kit and I'm just kicking myself that it took me so long to get a smart phone. I'm not really that interested in using it for games so I haven't done any research myself, but might look at some for a distraction in a pinch, so nice thread. I've been wanting to try something roguelike for a while - anyone got suggestions in that area?

Subscribing. Assuming backorders are caught up I should have my Incredible in about a month.

Following for future reference (Evo soon!)

I suspect that it'll slowly but increasingly become a platform for decent games, although Google could do well to make their OpenGL support a lot nicer. There appear to be dribs and drabs of reasonably good games coming through but it's almost impossible to find them among the torrent of apps. And there don't appear to be any worthwhile review sites out there that are seriously sorting the wheat from the chaff.

Same here. Was thinking switching to Sprint for the Pre, but I'm liking what I'm seeing from Android phones, and just found out about the Evo.

I think Texas has pretty much been blanketed with 4G, so you're in good shape. Hopefully New York's 'before the end of the year' coverage will be sooner, rather than later. Still, it'll be a huge upgrade from my 2g iPhone in almost every way except gaming.

I tend to play very casual, quick games on my phone and save the more immersive experiences for console and computer - does the Android have an ok library of Sudoku, crosswords and quick puzzle games? If I change my mind, does it have any strategy or RPG games to speak of? Does anyone have any experience with Android's emulation capacities?

It'll be like magic for me, coming from a Nokia 6010. Only roadblock is my wife not wanting me to spend any more time on the internet, but she switches between that and asking when I'm going to get a new phone, so it's just a matter of timing.

Tanglebones wrote:

Yes.

Not sure about strategy games, there appear to be plenty but none that have caught my eye. For the RPG side Zenonia has been getting all the props for ages but I'm not sure what else there is out there.

I've played a little with yongzh's Sega Genesis/megadrive emulator, Gensoid, on the Nexus one and it seemed pretty cool and faithful. Yongzh has a whole suite of 8 and 16bit and old handheld emulators all at about $3.50. I've yet to spend the cash on the SNES one but I suspect it'll be as good as the Genesis one. I've yet to see a version of MAME though.

I have found Drop7 to be incredibly addictive.

Sky Force is also a fun one, it uses the touchscreen really well.

(QR codes are the most fun thing about Android)

Tagged for following.
Any good RTS's out there? I would love an Age of Empires 2 port, or something similar.

I've been pretty happy with Abduction, Homerun Battle 3d and especially Replica Island.

I've had lots of fun with Age of Conquest. Just one more turn!

My boyfriend and I are getting Droids tomorrow and I was wondering if anybody has seen an Android version of PuzzleQuest or anything that is a lot like it.

That game is great, although having loaded it once and played it for a couple of hours it now won't load again. Boo

A quick google suggest Puzzle Lords is currently the closest you'll get

Tower Raiders is a great little tower defense game. Definitely got my money's worth out of that one.

The SNES emulator works great. Not so hot for anything that needs quick reflexes though. I've been playing Chrono Trigger on it.

Still waiting for a great RPG for Android. No luck finding one yet.

I also wasted more time than I'd care to admit playing Gem Miner. The ending is rather anticlimactic.

I've actually seen a port of Quake 3 being played on a droid. Its worth a look.

I'm quite interested in this thread. My cell phone company (iWireless) is getting android phones (Nexus One tomorrow) as they roll out 3g. Yeah, they're on the cutting edge. Anyway, I currently have an iPhone on 2g and found out that the 3g and 3gs won't work with iWireless's 3g (they are a t-mobile affiliate). So I'm looking into android phones and the biggest place it seems to be lacking is games. I've got a ton of games and educational games for the iPhone so I'd like to have something to replace them if I switch.

Also, how do I follow a thread?

EvilHomer3k wrote:

Just by posting in it. Up in the upper left corner of the page you will see your user name when logged in, below that is "My Account" click that link then go to the "Track" tab, and it will be a list of all threads you have ever posted in. Default sort is newest ones posted in (by anyone). And if that was a sarcastic comment jokes on me then.

Thanks. I was looking all over for a subscribe button or something.

Yeah, that was pretty much the closest I'd been able to find but thought it was worth a shot asking.

Not played it but Zenonia looks like a JRPG kind of thingy, reviews seem reasonable too.

Don't forget you can grab QR codes from http://apps.doubletwist.com/ (third-party web front-end to the Market) and post them along with your games.

I've been playing Retro Defense a little. Simple fun tower defense. Also WordUp, just a Boggle-like game. Has options for same-phone multiplayer and timer and stuff.

Ditto. I wonder how many games Evo owners will miss out on due to the lack of a trackball (like Nexus One), D-pad (Droid), or optical mouse (Incredible).

For instance, Quake 3 probably needs it, although I'm not so interested in playing an FPS on a phone anyways.

I'd think that if enough of the EVOs sell, there will be a good market for hardware gaming accessories like this one for the Droid:

I haven't played more than a few minutes but this is game is worth a download. The game looks great and the opening sequence was better than most AAA sprite games give. It's hard to control an adventure game on a phone, but that's an issue with the platform and not necessarily the game.

I enjoy Air Control. It is a decent Flight Control clone.

It's not really a game, but I found an awesome HypnoToad app for my G1 yesterday
