NFL 2011 Week 1

How many yards does Brady have to throw for before Hoyer gets to play?

Apparently, the number is somewhere above 517.

Also, every time I see "Brian Hoyer", I think "Bobby Hoying".

Well all the stats they were throwing out about QB passing yards this weekend... it sounds like the defenses were the ones that weren't ready after the lockout.

Except for the Colts, and maybe the Chiefs, everyone looked good on offense this week. Can't decide on the Steelers, maybe the Ravens D was that good.

FTFY.

Got to hand it to Denver -- they've really turned things around from last year. They just forgot to stop at 180, and went all the way around to 360. Good thing we have a great QB, otherwise, we might not be able to even score field goals.

Keep it classy, Oakland. I wouldn't expect anything less from such nice guys.

Woohoo! Way to do your 4th quarter thing Orton!

You know, as much as I'd appreciate football in the wee hours on a Sunday or better a Saturday, yeesh, NFL. Couldn't you hire Gus "AW TITTIES" Johnson to make the late game interesting?

Edit: Broncos fans are chanting "Tebow." It's like soft drink fans chanting "New Coke."

Saw this on one of the comments at the DenverPost.com. "I'd rather watch a comedy than a tragedy."

Oakland's going to be one of the most fun teams to watch if you watch line play. The defensive line is monstrous.

Tommy Kelly is a beast, and while Richard Seymour isn't the player he once was, he's still a handful. John Henderson isn't his Pro Bowl self anymore either, but he can do damage playing a limited set of downs as a rotational player.

Matt Shaughnessy and Lamarr Houston are both breaking out. Shaughnessy could be something special.

Okay, is it just me or does every commentator summary of the skins giants game make is sound like the giants won? 28-14 is a decent shelacking, especially after the giants scored first. This is a big deal. The skins don't beat division opponents very often (read -> never!)

Now, I saw a couple of TD passes from Grossman that won't fly in week 6 or later. But, seriously, giants highlights get 30 seconds per with a 2 second capper of a skins score. I guess the only newsworthy highlight appears to be manning's rushing td. Disgusting!

With Peyton out with decapitation, Ely is the best they can do for the customary weekly Manning inspired public masturbation they call "commentary".

Having watched ESPN nightly for the last 5 days, it appears they've taken up with riding Tom Brady's jock. Super sick of seeing Pats highlights.

And of course, as I type that, I get more of it. Gimme a break, guys.

While I really miss a lot of the sports I love by not having cable, I don't miss Sportscenter, at all.

Speaking of missing sports by not having cable (I cancelled DISH back in January), I've been considering getting Game Rewind. Anybody have any experience with it? Is it worth it? Do you like it?

They have to have something to justify 8 hours of nightly NFL coverage.

More like 8 hours of coverage on 5 different stations. They clearly don't understand the whole "less is more" concept.

Agreed. I'd go so far to say that if I were to give up cable, I wouldn't miss a single thing on ESPN other than Monday Night Football, and even there I could do without the commentators.

I had it for a year before I got DirecTV- it's great. You have to wait until the day following the broadcast to actually watch a game, so don't think it's a replacement for Sunday Ticket by any means, but the videos were always up on time and great quality. I used it to watch the whole 2008 Colts season in Syracuse, NY. They will auto-renew it if you don't explicitly cancel with them, so know that going in. I just filed a chargeback with my credit card company when they did it the first time and NFL customer service got me nowhere, and haven't had any charges show up in subsequent seasons.

Wait. Is that $20/month or $40 for the year (minus playoffs)? Why in the hell didn't I do that before? Now I can actually "study" (in quotes because I'm faaaaaar from an expert) games. Awesome.

Edit: When you sign up you can uncheck the renewal.

Edit: Edit: Just watched McKinnie and Ray Rice blow up the Steelers on the first play. Oh glorious internet!

garion - From the FAQ: "The NFL Game Rewind Season subscription includes: access to all on-demand, commercial-free regular season games, DVR controls, high-definition video, Big Play Markers, scores and stats and picture-in-picture and multi-view game modes." Sounds like a good deal if you don't mind waiting until the following day to watch games.

Landshrk - Thanks for the insight. I don't expect it to be a Sunday Ticket replacement as I never had it. Game Rewind does seem like a good deal, especially compared to the outrageous price of Sunday Ticket, so I think I'm gonna pull the trigger.

Sportscenter has been worthless for years. I generally just catch Around the Horn or PTI to get a quick blip of what is going on out there.

Sportscenter is the absolute worst offender on the network for wasting time, and mostly in inappropriate ways. When it's October and MLB playoffs are on they spend most of the show on NFL talk or NBA preseason. When it's March and NCAA Basketball is the big thing, they will spend all their time on MLB spring training. When it's June and the NBA/NHL playoffs are on, they will talk about nothing but the damned NFL draft. Worthless show.

Yup, I totally bit. I'm fine with this. I'll watch whatever I can/want on Sunday and then watch the other games during the week. Hell, I'm just happy I get to watch all the Ravens games this year and do it w/o commercials, which I still had to put up with last year with NFL Sunday Ticket To Go.

This is probably the most reasonably priced product the NFL puts out. I'm stoked.

Yeah, for $50 or whatever they charge, it's a great product. I've considered switching from Sunday Ticket back to Rewind to re-watch games or individual plays later in the week, but Sunday Ticket's Red Zone Channel alone is worth the price of admission (for me, at least).

In years past when my father got sick of how the Ravens were playing, he'd put on the 2000-2001 Super Bowl year tape to feel better. I think I'm going to watch this first game against the Steelers over and over again (even if I have to listen to Phil Simms over and over again). I just watched Ray Rice's running TD and Marshal Yanda completely killed Aaron Smith. The Ravens really made the Steelers look old, which may be an actual issue this year for Pittsburgh. We'll see.

garion333 wrote:

As did I. After watching about half of the Ravens-Steelers game (Phil Simms drove me away), I'm now watching the Jets-Cowboys.

Two things that I already know I'm going to love about this product:
- the plays sidebar where you can jump to almost any point in the game
- the +:10 button

Apropos of nothing, that Dan Le Batard show on ESPN2 isn't all that bad.

I used to enjoy catching Le Batard's weekend radio show on ESPN radio. I think he is always interesting.

I found him annoying when he filled in on PTI. Haven't checked out the new thing though.
