Legend Of Grimrock

I only played for an hour or so, and I didn't save and I died.
I can tell it's a good game when a death makes me want to play again (instead of making me see if it's time to go to bed).
I can't wait to dig in deeper.

Quicksave (f5) is your friend.

Liking this game a lot. Don't think this is a spoiler, but it was unclear to me that you could actually put objects down through (behind) the gates. I kept throwing empty bags, scrolls, torches, pants, anything I had, watching it bounce off the gate. I was about to throw something at the monitor and noticed that if you grab the item with the pointer and click it again in the lower 1/3'd of the screen it actually can be placed behind a gate... Not sure why for the life of me I couldn't figure it out.

I've made it to level 4 so far.

Doors and resting are definitely your friend though (and quicksave).

I had the same problem. Level three is impossible without that key knowledge.

So wish I'd added this to my cart while it was going for buttons on Steam. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled in the event it gets reduced, again, and hoping that if so it's not during my 12 hour shift tomorrow!

It's already been a daily and a flash, so the only chance is probably for the "best of" sales on Sunday.

May wind up being my biggest regret of the sale. Just watched the video at the beginning of this thread and am suffering the error of my ways.

Let's see which "meh" game I end up knee-jerking on as a result of not wanting to miss out again.

Good game, but I just hate puzzles. I may just stop because of that. Somebody make me a map where I can just strategically fight dudes.

*Ahum*
Not that I am actively using this....just at times when I really get frustrated. And then notice how much more I missed and more frustration sets in. Can't win! lol

That's nice. The little ASCII maps in the gamefaqs faqs were... ok. But that guide looks quite a bit better.

I've had to check 2 or 3 times in 7 floors. But yeah I've probably missed a lot of secrets by not totally following the guide.

I also made my own party so I probably don't need all the loot, since I went with 2 mages.

Quick question from a Grimrock Newb (Level 3). Will I encounter a store later on, or can I dump all unneeded stuff?

(EDIT: Yeah, I know, a store/shop in prison... So, a peddler perhaps?)

I was looking up YouTube videos, which was annoying.

Did anybody find a bow? I got as far as level 5 or 6 and I could only find arrows. My rogue was spec for bows.

I'm pretty much done. The Walking Dead put a nail on that coffin. Hopefully somebody can make a dungeon that has less emphasis on puzzles when the editor comes out.

No stores or trading

There go my scrolls and loincloths then - cheers!

Yeah there was a hidden one somewhere, level 3 or 4 maybe? And then there was the same bow out in the open on like 6, right near the end.

Got this on the steam sale. What is the time needed for a first playthrough? ~25 hours? I need to arrange my gaming dependent on the game length.

15-20 I reckon

I had an aborted start, and found a solid number of secrets.

Steam has me down for 42 hours.

Yeah avg from howlongtobeat is near 16 hours.

Definitely toss sh*t you won't use. No "oh well maybe so-and-so character might use it in a few levels". No! Toss it.

Pro-tip: leave everything at the level entrance or exit, in case you do decide you want something and have to back track to find stuff.

edit - wrong thread.

Scrolls just tell you the symbols you need to click to cast spells.

So... where do you find the symbols to click? My mage has a torch in one hand and a scroll in the other, and is being kind of useless. There's nothing in the tutorial or the manual that tells me what I can do with the scroll besides throw it at snails.

You don't equip the scroll. You have to either have a staff in one hand or leave the hand empty. When you want to cast, right click the empty hand or staff and the list of symbols will pop up. Select the correct ones and hit the big blue ball icon (you'll see it when you pull up the symbols).

Scrolls can be put in your bag or discarded (write it down on a piece of paper.. there is no reminder what the symbol combo is).

I dunno I kinda faded out on this one. Maybe it was overload from so many games from the Steam sale. But I feel like it's getting extremely difficult around floor 5 or 6 and apparently that's just halfway.

I'm sure I screwed up making my own party, but I'm not exactly wanting to restart and redo all the stuff I already did... not sure if I'll be able to finish either way.

Sheesh I am not strong enough to get into level 4. Not entirely sure what I can do about that. Having a lot of fun though.
Edit: Few, got it. Had to be really nimble on my feet though.

I'm right there with you Stele. I got this day one and enjoyed it but was never able to really master the turning/strafing with the keyboard. Midgame, when timing became more critical, my fingers failed me to the terminal frustration point.

I would have absolutely LOVED this game if it were turn-based as it should have been. If you have a DS, I recommend Orcs and Elves. I think it was a mobile game too.

Totally. I bought this at release and made it to the same point and stopped playing it for a long time. But now every time I look at my library I'm so tempted to go back into it. I kinda forgot why I stopped in the first place at this point

Yep, I faded out at the same point as well. It seemed I had to start saving before every fight because there was a good chance one of my guys would die each time. I also wasn't a fan of the rapid click-fest for the combat.

Thems fighting words, mister. If it were turn-based then it would have been a slow slog, and lost a lot of the frenetic combat that made it so good. I don't mind turn based dungeon crawls, however there is totally a place for more action-oriented games like Grimrock.
