FF2011: Official GWJFFL (non-keeper) signup and discussion thread

Any more information on when GWJFFL3 will be doing it's draft?

Shows I am in the league when I click on Grumps link for GWJFFL2, but when I sign in to Fleaflicker says I am not in any leagues.

BTW sorry for not voting on the draft time, was away.

I may need another invite for the league.

I'll finalize that today. Sorry for the delay.

GWJFFL1 knocks it out in 1 hour, 50 minutes.

Results.

Overall I'm happy with my draft, but I made a big mistake this time thinking that my backup QB target would last one more round. I can probably pull someone off waivers if need be, but it's still painful.

The teams I'm most scared of this time:

Leap's Peeps
Legion's 9 toenails

Glad to hear it.

With the disruption of the lockout, I went for stability, particularly at the top of my draft. I wanted players in well-defined roles, playing for teams and systems that they are comfortable in and won't suffer from any lost practice time.

My top 9 players are all guys returning to the same team and general situation they had in 2010: MJD, Forte, Miles Austin, Peyton Manning, Marques Colston, Jeremy Maclin, Jimmy Graham, Mike Tolbert, and Nate Burleson. Very little question of roles for any of those guys, particularly at the top. I prioritized this stability over any health concerns (Manning, Maclin, MJD a little). Tolbert is the only one on that list whose role may have some flux, but as much as I like Ryan Mathews, he was an injury case every year back in Fresno, too.

I was dead set against going RB-RB at the top of this draft, but the WR options I wanted in round 2 were taken up, while Forte remained. I figured of the four WRs I was considering at that spot (Nicks, Austin, V-Jax, and Wayne, the entirety of my WR 2nd-tier), one would hopefully last to me in round 3. Austin did.

Was annoyed to miss out on handcuffing Forte with Marion Barber, but did so with MJD and Jennings.

My late round sleeper of the year: Jerome Harrison. Mikel Leshoure is on IR, and Jahvid Best is a walking injury himself. Harrison has always had both power and breakaway ability but things never seemed to fall into place for him in Cleveland. I think he has more "juice" than any of the other backs behind Best and is clearly the most suited for goal-line work. He has yet to win his role outright but I think he's a prime candidate for being a Mike Tolbert-like time-splitter + injury starter.

I was ticked off in my non-GWJ draft when Simpson went two spots before I got to pick.

Used SteamIM to ask someone a question last night. If you haven't "friended" me yet, it might come in handy at some point.

Thanks, I guess we'll see! I was hoping Ray Rice would fall to me at pick #4 but ended up with LeSean McCoy instead when Phishposer auto-picked Rice at 3, I think at the end of the year Rice will be the #1 RB assuming he isn't injured. In round 2 I am just hoping Hillis repeats his performance, he has to do something since after all Cleveland doesn't have much else. I am pretty happy with my top 3 WRs (V-Jax, Welker, the good Mike Williams), instead of picking a top tier querterback early like I have done the last few years (Manning, Brady) I intentionally wanted to wait to the middle rounds and get a QB almost as good so I could get an extra top WR.

Looking back I am not overly thrilled with taking Santana Moss in the 6th and Jonathan Stewart in the 8th, but I seem to remember there wasn't a lot left at that point. I had wanted to pick up Tolbert in the 8th but Legion got him three picks earlier, I have never been very high on Stewart but Deangelo does get hurt often.

I picked up a couple of rookies late, Jacquizz Rodgers and Titus Young. Both have played well in preseason and are one injury away from big minutes.

As is usually the case, I spend more time herding you cats than prepping for my draft.

I haven't had time to give much thought to draft strategy this year so I basically went with "best available" from my list. By the middle rounds, I had so little insight into backups that I just said "screw it" and grabbed my D and K. I can't remember the last time I've filled either of those positions before round 16 before.

Of course, these days, I admittedly "run" the GWJFFL as a service to the community so my sense of satisfaction comes more from how smoothly things go instead of how well my individual teams do. I must admit, though, I was pleased to win GWJFFLK's inaugural season. And winning 2 out of 3 consolation tourneys eased the pain of not making the playoffs in the rest. I'm king of the losers!

Don't forget, the GWJFFL2 draft is at 8:30 Central tonight (not 9:00).

This year, more than ever, that's a good strategy.

This is... err, well, you started strong.

Hippie.

I put on a lucky hat I bought off eBay for a dollar and picked whoever I thought had the funniest name. I was really sorry that I couldn't get a hold of Jacquizz Rodgers.

Thanks again Grumps. I can only imagine the headache setting up this stuff is.

So, here's my starting lineup for GWJFFL2:

QB - Ben Roethlisberger
RB - Ahmad Bradshaw
RB - Peyton Hillis
WR - Andre Johnson
WR - Calvin Johnson
WR - Marques Colston
WR/RB/TE - Santonio Holmes
TE - Brandon Pettigrew
K - Sebastian Janikowski
DT - Kansas City

I also have Steve Smith (Car) on my bench. I'm pretty happy with my WR haul. Grumps, I'm all open to trades for Smith as I know you want more Carolina players.

Hey Rat Boy. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

GWJFFL2 finished right at two hours. Here are the results.

GWJFFLK drafts tomorrow night at 9pm Central.

GWJFFL3 will draft on Wednesday, September 7 at 9pm Central.

Here is mine:

Josh Freeman QB
Chris Johnson RB
Felix Jones RB
Roddy White WR
Brandon Marshall WR
Steve Johnson WR
Austin Collie WR/RB/TE
Kellen Winslow TE
Miami Dolphins TM

With Fred Jackson/CJ Spiller on the bench and a crapload of young/rookie WR's. Still need to pickup a K at some point. I feel pretty good about it, though! Here's hoping C. Johnson signs a contract tomorrow.

EDIT: and a HUGE thanks to Grumps for being the spectacular gentleman that he is.

Wow, 3 QBs in the first round!

To comment on Garion's above... As I said at the draft, you're only starting 2 fairly solid RB2's, but you've got two AMAZING WR1's instead. Not hugely well rounded but should put up a large number of points anyway.

EDIT:

Yeah, a lot of people were QB crazy off the bat, led to some great deals for the rest of us.

22.5 hours before the first game kicks of. I love it.

Really, that was begging to be FTFY in that fashion.

Well, after seeing the results of 10 rounds of auto-picking all I can say is Thanks the benevolent spaghetti monster that I was there for the first half.

Yup, I was more than happy to let people take QBs so that Andre Johnson and Calvin Johnson fell to me at the end of round 1. There were good RBs available to take, but I just couldn't say no to the Johnsons.

Sig that if you like.

garion333 wrote:

Ask, and yee shall receive.

garion333 wrote:

I was all set with a strategy to take Andre Johnson at 1.6 because I was sure the limited crop of elite RBs would be gone by that point. To my surprise, not only was Jamaal Charles still there, but so was Arian Foster (although I was worried by his hamstring concerns).

After going back through the rosters for GWJFFL2:

Grumps, garion, and boogle (Frakkers) had the best drafts

Rat boy, Landshrk, Kush, and bill_bonney had the worst drafts

But there's not a lot of difference between the two. I don't see any teams that won't be competitive, just teams that will need a little more waiver wire help than others.

In a PPR league especially, how on earth does Michael Turner go ahead of MJD, and LaGarrette Blount over Matt Forte and Frank Gore?

I have to imagine Grumpy seeing Gore slide down to him in the middle of Round 3 and thinking, "yeah, Imma take that guy."

And he did it right before me. The bastard.

Edit: Felix Jones in round three is nothing to spit at, either. Just would rather have had Frank Gore.

And now to screw up my teams chances with a season of miss-management.

And Mendenhall went really early too. I was confused, but happy.

garion333 wrote:

Yeah, him too.

I really dislike and avoid running backs who aren't very efficient and get their numbers entirely on volume of carries. They tend to sputter out and disappear at the drop of a hat (see: Rudi Johnson, 2007). Eddie George was the king of the 1000+ yard season earned one 3.7 yard carry at a time, but he endured in that role the way few others can.

I don't understand why taking Mendenhalll early is a bad thing. He consistenly puts up good numbers. Andre Johnson and MJD are injuries waiting to happen.

My starting roster for anyone curious.

QB - Drew Brees
RB - Rashard Mendenhall
RB - Shonn Greene
WR - Brandon Lloyd
WR - Miles Austin
WR - Chad Ochocinco
TE - Owen Daniels
RB/WR/TE - Marshawn Lynch
K - Mason Crosby
DEF - SD Chargers

The only one I feel like is a risk is Ocho, but if he pans out it will be a nice payoff.
