SPAZ - Space Pirates and Zombies

So, I'm 23 hours into this game and just broke into the core world. Still about 30 systems to unlock. ie. Worth the 15 bucks

The two devs from MinMax Games were on the Quarter to Three games podcast this past week: http://www.quartertothree.com/fp/201...

Picked up the game. Perfect popcorn fun.

Has anyone else run into a system where they cannot raise reputation with a faction? I've run into several systems where the Civs have technology I need to buy, but I cannot find a quest that will let me gain reputation with them. Seems like a bug.

edit - found online that 'non-quest' planets oftentimes have space stations you can kill. if they're UTA stations, you get Civ rep. Good to know.

In that situation you can either kill the UTA stations enough that you can land on the CIV station and bribe yourself the rest of the way up. The easier way is to just kill the CIV station with the tech you want and take it. Beware that Strength 3 stations will be beyond your reach for quite some time, and Strength 2 stations may also be difficult. Find UTA missions that lower CIV strength in the system first.

One cool thing they added now is that you can steal tech by sending marines to board the enemy stations. Once I realized I could steal I stopped befriending everyone and just took what I wanted. Like a true pirate!

Any idea what we got with 1.0010 today? Can't find any info.

Was it the Halloween update?

Actually I think it was just the post-Halloween reversion.

Oh man, so that really was only for one day? That sucks.

What are you guys talking about? I didn't see what happened for Halloween.

The "talking heads" had costumes on.
The mothership was covered in cobwebs.
Stations had a Trick or Treat option that dropped data spheres and bombs and stuff.
The background had ghost faces that would flash for a split second.
Background sounds were themed.
Asteroids were jack o'lanterns.
Rez was candy corn and halloween taffy candy.

I think that's the majority of it.

Edit: Halloween is still listed under the mods, so you should be able to check it out. I guess the patch was just to change the default config back.

Ohhh, that explains a lot.

My very first time playing had the Halloween mod.

My first game was on Casual difficulty. I didn't know this meant I got fewer hangars.

That would seem backwards to me.

I believe the enemies are also fewer in number. I think the idea is that fewer ships = less complicated? I wish the description had been more explicit. I kept desperately hoping for more hangars.

Instead of casual difficulty, create a new game but add more planets to the galaxy (or system or whatever). This way the difference in system levels is not so great so it's easier to explore. Plus you get more time with the game.

Nah, I started a new game with the minimum number of planets and maximum complexity. I only did casual before because I thought it might take a while to learn the combat system. It did not. And I don't want this game to drag on forever.

I would heartily suggest listening to the QT3 podcast episode where they interview the two SPAZ devs, lots of little tips and tricks revealed.

Apparently Veteran difficulty is also the baseline. Anything higher and the player will start to play under a handicap compared to the AI.

SPAZ is 50% off on Steam. It was already a good buy, 50% off is a highly recommended deal.

I didn't know that either, you sure about that? Once you're through the tutorial (or choose to skip it) you should always have Large/Small/Small going out into the galaxy.

I'm probably going to grab this if it becomes a daily deal for 75% off.

SPAZ is excellent. It's a simple game, but there's a lot of depth to it.

Just saw this: according to one of its devs, SPAZ will not have a daily sale in this Autumn sale.

Yes, I'm sure.

Also, I kinda wish the campaign was... different. Something less the-same each play through.

The sameyness of the campaign is my biggest turnoff with the game. I put more time into the beta than the full release even though there's more missions and whatnot. Can't stop the fact that it's basically a giant grind, which I enjoyed, but have a hard time starting over.

Yeah, that's been my only real complaint as well. Here's hoping for good mods. I'd love a more open-ended trade based game.

Glad you reminded me! Picked it up with 20 minutes to spare. Now if only I had a spare 20 minutes to play.

Yeah. Which is a shame, because the combat system is fun and lends itself to replayability. But the way the campaign plays out does not.

I agree samey-ness is SPAZ's big flaw. Not so much the campaign itself, which is really quite short, but the fact that there's little to vary the huge amount of stuff in between campaign missions. There's quite a lot to experiment with in the tech tree, taking different weapons and trying out the different strategies they call for, but the galaxy is a bit too much your oyster.

One thing I think they really need to work on is making the world feel a bit more alive, with more pro-active things that happen without your say-so. The Bounty Hunters sound like they'll be the first big step forward in that direction.
