SWTOR: Catch-All

Not sure of the particulars because bottom line is if you plan to put any amount of time in this beyond just a cursory look at what's new you're better off to subscribe. I just pay for a month at a time and just cancel when I know i'll be taking an extended break.

Not entirely. I've put in a tonne of time as a pure free to play player, never played back during the subscription times and have not run into any walls. Probably a case of not knowing what am missing, but so far have been able to play and have fun with no issues that made me feel like a sub would be better.

Ya the qualifier is if you played before. Because you definitely cant come close to that without a sub. Not to mention be constantly reminded that you don't have a sub.

You can have 6 active characters per server if you're preferred. The 2 might be from when they initially introduced F2P and several limits were lower than they are now.

Is anyone still active and if so which server?

Just got back into playing some, all my Characters are on Jedi Covenant.

Still playing, though I've moved to the Harbinger server.

Still play regularly if not daily. Mostly solo on the Jedi Covenant server. It's not the best MMO out there, but it is good enough and scratches my Star Wars itch perfectly.

Still active on Jedi Convenant, and still keeping the lights on for Imperial Paper Pushers.

I am on the Prophecy of the Five - Imperial...

Still on Red Eclipse - on both sides

I started playing this again over the weekend. All my characters are in Prophecy of the Five server. Last time I played, Makeb wasn't out so I have a few level 50 and decided to take my Imperial Operative to 55 first.

So far, the Makeb storyline has entertained me. I'm already 55 because I ran a few dungeons and one round of the Dailies, which gave me quite a lot of XP. I haven't noticed a lot of new content though. I ran a dungeon that didn't need specific roles to complete them and other than that, I didn't see anything new on the LFG tool for me to run between 50 and 54.

Last time I played I mostly PVPed, but I think I want to PVE a bit more this time around. I'm a bit lost on the gear progression though... Should I be trying to get a full set of the Classic gear with the commendations? Will that be enough to start running Hardmode Flashpoints at 55?

Most new content is for end-level. If you haven't played since 2.0, the big new things (other than Makeb itself) are Galactic Starfighter (space PVP), arenas, Czerka and Oricon daily areas, 3 level 55 operations (Scum and Villainy, Dread Fortress, Dread Palace), KDY (15-55 tactical flashpoint), two Czerka flashpoints and a set of Korriban/Tython flashpoints (55 tactical).

In terms of gearing I wouldn't really bother with Classic gear unless you're just super undergeared. Get somebody to run you through the Oricon starting questline and you'll get an almost full set of Basic Gear.

Dulfy's guide http://dulfy.net/2013/04/14/swtor-le... is pretty good, actually.

Thanks a lot, kmzh. Exactly what I needed!

I've had the urge to see more of the class stories so for the first time since the game went free to play, I hopped back in as a free player to try it out.

The biggest thing I've noticed is that they never waste an opportunity to remind you how much cooler the game would be if you subscribed. The fact that they even make the cosmetic options of hiding the helmet on your avatar or displaying a title after your name a "subscriber only" option? That's just ridiculous. Finish a quest and they have 3 options for rewards you can choose? Well, only 2 of those are open to you as a FTP player while one will be grayed out with a "subscribe" button over it. Remember how in order to craft you needed 2 gathering and 1 crafting professions? Well, unless you subscribe your crewmates can only have 2 of the 3 professions needed. Oh, and if you're going to try to use the "rested" mechanic to offset the exp penalty? I had several reminders pop up on the screen that only subcribers can gain rested status. You're also limited to the number of times you can run PvP or group instances per week and it's an extremely low limit. We're talking something like 5 times in a week. Oh, and one that just made me laugh out loud was the fact that during group instances you're only allowed to need on an item roll twice per week.

That kind of little stuff along with the perfectly fine and totally expected inventory and in-game cash limitations, auction house limits and exp penalties just make this feel like a great game filled with gnats. It's just a constant stream of tiny annoyances. Yes, you can still play the game and enjoy most of the story but by playing for free I feel like I now have a guy following me around in game, tapping me on the shoulder about every five minutes saying "So, have you subscribed yet?".

The PvP space arenas are okay but it's no Jump to Lightspeed or X-wing. I'd actually probably compare the space combat more to a faster version of Crimson Skies. So, not bad but nowhere near game changing as some had hoped it would be.

Basically, as a free player I'll probably enjoy going through the class stories on a couple of my characters I'd left in the mid 20's as long as I don't play more than a couple times a week for no more than a couple of hours.

I'm really interested in your take on this, Kehama.
I picked the game up again after several months last night and had a great time! Yeah, I see all the stuff you mention, but none of it bothered me. I don't do PvP anyway, so that's ok, and so far none of the quest rewards locked behind the subscribers wall seemed good enough for me to worry about them.
Some time ago, I went ahead and spent the $4.99 in the store to get the preferred status (I think I bought a new race), and that opened up a lot of the game, I highly recommend doing that.

And, sorry to filthy skim here, but is there a guild to join?

If you dont do any crafting/pvp/dungeons/raids then there's no reason to worry about the sub wall. If you intend or want to do any of those things more than once or twice a week you're better off to sub.

Downloading this on a whim (feel like some free MMO in between Dark Souls 2 on my 36). Posting in here so that you know when you get a message from someone asking to join the guild, that it is from me.

same same

Just a reminder folks, Double XP, July 1-7

The guild still exists, but isn't really populated. Most folks have migrated on to another guild that was raiding, but I don't even know how much of that is still going on.

Are you still on Jedi Covenant? I logged on as I got a free invite and it shows me as guildmaster of Army of One and there are a bunch of old GWJ names on it. I guessed this was a placeholder from a transfer?

Yeah, I'm still here!

I've been taking a bit of a break from the main game until the new patch hits next week (also baby and visiting relatives have kept me busy the past few weeks), but I'll be back when the new patch goes up. If you need anything in the mean time, you can catch me on Steam.

I was curious to see if anyone out there was on the RP server, Ebon Hawk. I see a lot of other servers listed- some of which I've never heard of (maybe they're the euro servers?). Just a small shout out from a mid-40's smuggler.

Still plugging away at this. Got my first toon up to level 50 yesterday (Imperial Operative, specced dps). Seems like a lot of folks are coming back to check out the latest update which includes housing and guild ships.

I just found out today that Nico Okarr, the smuggler in The Old Republic trailer, was voiced by John DiMaggio, the voice of Bender. I have no idea why that makes me so happy. Anyway, pointless trivia, but there you go.

I still play this - or rather again. Its pretty fun, especially now that I have a somewhat high level character for the first time. My Jedi Knight is 47 now, so that helps a lot!

For those interested, it seems they are teasing 3.0 now, and the latest video shows someone that I think is Revan?

What server do you play on Razgon?

A European one, Progenitor I think its called? You still play?

Yep. Play on the Harbinger. Had my first level 55 toon the other week. Only took me 2+ years to get it.
