Hi, Goodjers. Elysium is scheduled for his open-heart surgery at 7:30 a.m., CST. I'll be posting updates in this thread, as well as on Twitter. Feel free to follow along. I'll share any/all comments with Elysium once he is a little less high on the morphine!
And once again, thank you for the support and kindness you've shown during all of this. I'm so proud of our GWJ community - proof that the internet can be a real community, where real friendships are forged. Thank you all so much.
Update 6:45 a.m.
At the hospital. Sean is being prepped. I'll get to see him again before they start. Trying to be brave.
Sean is getting his first sedative now. This should make things a lot easier. So grateful for drugs!
Waiting. They'll call when surgery actually begins.
On the bypass machine now. Will be a couple of hours until I have another update. I'll post as soon as I can.
The nurse just came in and said that everything is going very smoothly, by the numbers. Probably another 1-2 hours on the bypass pump yet.
Off the heart-lung bypass machine and closing! Dr will be out to talk to me in about an hour or so. Woohoo!
Sean is out of surgery, in the ICU. The doc said the procedure went as perfectly as it could possibly have gone. So HAPPY!
Just spent about 10 minutes with Sean. He opened his eyes and smiled at me (despite the ventilator tube), squeezed my hand, wiggled his toes, gave me a thumbs-up. He's really looking quite good for what he's been through. Extubation later tonight.
Sean is extubated, talking, doing really well. He's got better color, his oxygen sats are great, and the nurses are quite enthusiastic about his prognosis. He looks very weak and exhausted, but they assure me that he looks fantastic.
Then they (nicely) fussed at me, and told me to get out, go home, and go to sleep. Apparently they are tired of looking at the bags under my eyes. I'll post a new update in the morning. Thanks again for all the awesome Goodjer support!

Just got kicked out of Sean's room for the shift change. He looks amazing for a man who just had open-heart surgery. The nurses are wildly enthusiastic! Hopefully he can move to a room today (ICU isn't much fun, or very restful). I'll update when that happens.
Sean is in a room! Happy, happy happy. He walked approx 70 feet this p.m. My husband is AMAZING.

Sorry, guys - it's been a long time since my last update. Elysium is having a pretty rough day. The big time painkillers are wearing off, and he's retaining a good bit of fluid, and he's feeling pretty down about how exhausted he is. He knows intellectually that it will get better in a day or two, but
it's hard to get past how bad he feels today. Still, the hospital staff all sound quite positive about his progress, so he's doing his best to hold onto that.
Sean's chest tubes are out. He's been worried in anticipation of getting them out - people say that can be very painful. He didn't have nearly as much pain as he had feared. He's conked out now. I think the relief of having that over with has sent him off to dreamland.

Sean's doing SO well today! Much perkier and more like himself! He's headed to cardiac rehab in a few minutes, and I'm sure that will take it out of him, but I'm SO pleased at how well he's feeling. Woohoo!
Sean walked 10 minutes on a treadmill, climbed a little set of stairs twice, then collapsed into bed for a long, well-deserved snooze, which he's still working on. I'm so proud of "The Bionic Beard" - he's doing so well.
More cardio therapy this afternoon, same sort of stuff (treadmills, walking, stairs). They are determined that Sean sleep very well tonight.
On the disappointing side, the surgeon has made it clear that he can't go home until he reaches certain blood levels, and that it simply won't be tomorrow. Our hopes are a little dashed, and the kids are going to be very disappointed.
Friday, 9:45 a.m.
Elysium is at cardiac rehab right now, so I'm taking a moment to post. He won't get to go home today, or probably until Sunday or Monday, but he's doing so wonderfully well. He's much more mobile and active, and working hard to get his endurance back. He still sleeps a lot between rehab sessions, but he's bouncing back beautifully. I'm going to let the kids come see him today. They really miss their daddy!

It sounds like Sean is going to be able to go HOME today! We're so excited! Woohooo!
I've had several people ask where to send flowers. Feel free to PM me and I'll send you info on where to send. Thanks, everyone who asked!
I'm sitting on the sofa on our living room, across from Elysium, who is comfortably settled in his oversized recliner. We both have laptops, and we can hear our kids playing happily downstairs under the watchful eye of my wonderful mother (who came up to watch them, so I can dote on Elysium properly.)The windows are open, with a cool breeze drifting in, birds singing, and a white-tailed deer grazing on my flower border. (Seriously.) We've been for a nice walk this morning, yet Elysium is still wriggling his foot as he types - a sure sign of his returning energy.
Elysium has posted an update on page 15 of this thread. I'm going to add my thanks to all of you here as well. You can't imagine how much it helped to look on here and see all of the posts of caring and support. It meant more than you will ever know. Thanks to the amazing GWJ community at large - you guys rock.
