SWTOR: alliance guild discussion

At least it's not RIFT. Three threads is pretty reasonable; one for each guild, and one for the main thread.

And you don't have to go anywhere.

Stay here and use the Rep thread for all your various talkings.

Ugh, still annoyed that I need other Goodjers to PM me to read new threads in order to keep up with old ones. Fair enough I guess, now that you broke them down.

It's also not a done deal yet, so if you have a problem with it, speak out.

Know that you will not have to use that other forum, however.

OK, this is going to be my first MMO, so I'm not familiar with all the lingo and structures... what does it mean when you ask if 2 guilds are going to be in the same server? I thought it was a large open world where everyone is all there at the same time. Also, having no MMO experience... what are the pros of joining up with other groups?

The world is the same, but because the population of the game will probably be in the millions of people, the MMO's population is split across many, many servers. Usually if you're on one server, you can't interact with people on another server. Our goal is to get both guilds (and all of their players) on the same server, so we can PVP against each other, talk if there's cross-faction talk, etc. The game itself won't be different from server to server, but the people playing it will. Also, unlike FPS games, servers are usually a permanent decision. In most MMOs, there's either no way to move characters, or a fee that you have to pay.

So if there are 5 servers, then the entire population of subscribers are split into 5 groups? Who can never interact with each other? So what happens when you want to interact with family who are playing overseas?

I keep telling yah; You, ukick, and myself are forming a squad. Like the space A-Team!

Edit: Only we're MMO noobs, none of us are black, and I most certainly do not like it when a plan comes together.

Correct

'normally' After launch you can select which server you want to be on. Sometimes before launch they lock servers down by region though so may have to be prepared.

So you tell whomever you want to play with what server you're on. Then you can meet in the middle.

As for the seperate thread i didnt want to clutter up actual game news with guild business.

The guild (we glorious goodjers and friends) will have a centralized place to meet, chat, trade... basic components of a MMO. As for teh merger of 2 guilds it's to try and combine as many Goodjers into 1 pot before game is launched.

BTW... Anyone who taking the MMO dip for the first time has questions not just about SWTOR, but MMOs in general dont hestiate to post or you can PM me.

Supie, try to think of it like the TF2 thread, and the TF2 trading thread. We just want to not clutter all the glorious hat talk with the silly non-hat aspects of the game.

Along the same lines as Ranalin, if anyone has any concerns about a merger that the don't feel were completely answered, or they don't want to post them in public, feel free to PM me. I feel I have a pretty good feel for both groups, and would love to ease anyone's mind if they need it.

Same. Feel free to PM anyone on either of the guild officer lists.

Except Chabuda. He will fill you with lies.

More MMO noob questions: Do they typically let you have more than 1 character? In KOTOR and all the other Bioware games I have multiple characters to see the different outcomes and nuances of taking the different path. If you have more than 1 character, can they be in different guilds? I want to be able to explore the light side and dark side, but you can't possibly have both characters be in the same guild, can you? This leads to my next question: If all Goodjers get rolled into 1 massive guild, what about the light/dark side differences?

There are two factions (one republic, one imperial) - there will still be separate guilds for each faction. The merge being talked about here is two republic guilds merging together.

We don't know how many characters will be allowed per server yet, but typically it's between 5-10. Your characters can each be in different guilds, or the same guild - your decision. The way the game is being designed, each character class will have a different story, so you'll probably want to try out a few at least.

I would put money on them giving you at least 8 character slots since each class has a different story.

Not touching that bet with a 10 foot pole

I've heard from some of the beta testers that they have 8 slots. Presumably so you can do each class on both factions, or so you can do each branch of a class for a single faction. However, no one knows yet if they will keep this number of slots when the game goes live.

8 total? or 8 per server?

I really can't stand mmo's with a small fixed character limit.

Would imagine it would be at least 8 per server with no limit on how many servers you could join.

I'm not too sure how I feel about moving... well yes I am, I would prefer not to, but I'm not the kind of person that would hold it up if everyone else wanted to go. I also wouldn't want everyone to stay for a few people that didn't want to go because then it would just be awkward and the guild would definitely fall apart. I fully plan on playing this game for a long time and see it as the one game that could pull me away from TF2, but I play a more relaxed style and am not that comfortable joining an established guild of people that have their more serious play style.

I wouldn't worry too much about this. While Eldain is most definitely established, and does partake of endgame content in LotRO, they are anything but serious. If that's a hold up, please, don't let it be.

As for the forums, ranalin hit the nail on the head. There are a ton of goodjers(myself included, here lately) who either don't, or infrequently visit the Eldain forums. Again, it's not a major issue unless you're going to let it be one.

Blasphemous posting alert!!!
I'm at a loss on whether to go Empire or Republic in this game. Perhaps I'd like to go to the guild with the most people and I presume that will be Republic. I also tend to like playing the good guys when I play video games. On the other hand, it might be fun to play with the underdogs (from a PVP perspective due to anticipated fewer players) and go Empire.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the pros/cons, or do they exist at all?

Just personal preference... At this point they seem to making things as balanced at the start as they can. Things will adjust after the game starts though due to population shift.

Make a character on both sides at launch! I know I will, and I'm a Sith guild officer

Not anymore, turncoat.

Curses!

I switched this morning. Name is the same as here.

Hi, everyone!
I've been lurking this thread for a while, too selfconscious to post anything because English isn't my first language and I'm usually a bit shy with first meetings, but I've finally though about something I could share and perhaps help to clarify a little about Eldain.
I saw the answer AnimeJ gave about the Eldain forums and about the guild being laid back. Well, I've been part of that guild for the longest time I've ever been a part of any guild in any MMO (I've been playing games with my husband since Ultima Online, we're a couple of old farts :D). I think the main reason we lasted this long in Eldain is because the people are great, there's zero drama between the members and no one is a gaming freak that keeps counting how many hours a week you've played and such.
My hubby and I took breaks from LotRO several times in teh past four years, we've been back to WoW a couple of times, to DDO another couple and even played so called "free MMOs" that make you assassinate your wallet to be able to play it right, and everytime we came back the folks in the guild were always warm and helpfull.
I saw someone else saying they had been in hardcore raiding guilds and they don't ever wanna do that again. I say AMEN!! to that, I've in a DKP guild in wow, raiding 5 days a week, first server kills for Gruul's, Lady something in SSC (I can never spell her name right) and in Black Temple (Kael-fluffy pants) but it was so stressful I will never do that again!! And Eldain is the complete oposite of all that.
About being stabilished guild, I don't ever say that. As I see it, we're a stabilished group of friends. And we're welcoming to new friends. Always! I remember recruiting Psych into Eldain and in a week we were already saying we hate eachother and saying we suck and cracking up laughing. And I remember meeting AnimeJ and failing miserably at saying his character name and everyone laughing over vent about it.
So, we're a laughing group! And an easy going one. I'm the one mentioned earlier in this thread (half of the brazilian couple) and mostly I do lightining showups now that my baby is 5 months old, but before it I was responsible for the afternoon's crazy brazilian instance stravaganza (zomg, spelling) and my biggest joy was always meeting new people and trying to steal them into the guild when they sounded like fun people to be around.
I hope I helped clarify a little the spirit of the group of friends (er.. guild). So far I've seen praises to our gaming prowess (we have the luck of being good gamers as well as good friends) but most importantly, I wanted to make sure you could all see that we're also very open!
Cheers!! And sorry for the super long post... I have this problem... I hope they make a patch for it, like those for nicotin!

PS: edited for crazy spelling correction.. I'm sure I still murdered English, but oh, well....

Thanks Aveleth!

Ugh, it's spelled 'Eilwe.' I cannot believe she got her own name wrong.

Ugh, I hate seeing misspelled words in my quoted text.
