Weird, I don't know why I thought Ghost Story hardback was already out.
Last week we played another session of our DF RPG campaign. We traded 2 kegs of beer to a troll for a box with Enochian writings.
Quintin - so jealous, I have the books, but noone here to play it with.

* The habit of re-introducing characters/concepts during each installment in case this is the first novel the reader has braved.
But still, it's ostensibly pulp detective fiction with a supernatural spin, so you kind-of know what you're in for when you start reading. It's guilty pleasure popcorn reading but pretty enjoyable popcorn reading at its best.
The best and the worst in 1 quote I have noticed he tends to do much less of the re-introducing by the later books. I swear 1/2 of the first few in the series is spent explaining people we already know...

Ditto. The writing in the rule books are better than a large, large number of *novels* out there. The rules are there, but the comments by Bob, Harry and the other guy (the werewolf) are of the "oh yeah, btw" stuff that you would get if a freind was explaining the rules to you.

Oh, in case any of you were unaware, many of the "characters" from the novels have their own Twitter accounts:
Be warned! You can expect their posts or bios to contain spoilers of the latest books. Keep that in mind before you follow them or read their tweets.
But... but... How do wizards (who break electronics) post to the internet?

I think he has other issues that might interfere with his tweeting right now, too.
I read through to book 12 in January and can't wait to get my hands on the latest. Thanks for the heads up thread, Stele.
Just finished the last half of Changes, in one sitting. Wow. I've typically been able to see stuff coming in these books, but I was blindsided by pretty much every major event in this one. Those were a lot of changes. Apropos title, I suppose.
My copy of Ghost Story came today. On chapter 3 now.
I'm about halfway through. As you might expect, it's not as epic as Changes or Dead Beat. It's got a more contemplative, sombre tone.
Impressions and thoughts so far, all prepared to be shown as dimwitted by the end of the book:
It's tough seeing the pain of the people forced to take up the mantle, Murphy and especially Molly are being put through the spiritual wringer. Molly's actions will have long-term consequences, I guess, and whilst I'm not sure whether using illusions to indirectly get humans killed counts as a crime for the White Council, I would expect that it does. However, Ramirez seems to be giving her a lot of slack on the issue.
My assumption always was, and still is at this halfway stage, that Harry will become alive again by the end of the book. Assuming that happens, by the time he gets there, I think he will have acquired a bit of wisdom as a result of this time as a Ghost. He's having to learn skills again, and take a more measured approach to things (e.g. trying to reform the mooks rather than just burning them).
It's very interesting to finally get a flashback to Harry's time with DuMorne and his battle with He Who Walks Behind. Since we believe that The Outsiders are crucial to the overall story, I imagine it will be important.
It's nice to see Butters being so effective as the new Scooby Gang's Q. He's a character that's had a real arc through the stories
I don't recall having met Felicity Raith before, has she been mentioned?
Stupid work.
Can't wait to dig into this. I'll put down Dance w/ Dragons to tear through Ghost Story!
Not sure if scifibookclub is shipping it so I get it today or tomorrow, bah I say! I did read the first 5 chapters on line though....
Grabbed this to take backpacking. Should I read Side Jobs first though?

It's not necessary. There's one Murphy story set at roughly the same time as the beginning of Ghost Story. Other than that, I'd say dive in to the new one, then read Side Jobs at your leisure.
I'm just over half way through, and really enjoying it. Whilst the subject matter is necessarily dark, the delivery is just so enjoyable, especially since the last book I read was the latest tome from George R. R. Martin!
Ghost Story does seem very short after Dances With Dragons, though. Mind you, most things do!
Gah! I want this book. I want it for the Kindle. I am not paying $14.99 for it though. Gah!
BOOO!!! It is not yet available in eBook form on Chapters.ca

Yeah, I'm peeved. Kindle is the most expensive release. I buckled so that I could read it while backpacking and one Kindle really trumps taking 3 or 4 books.

I'm going to hold out for a couple of weeks until I get my new Audible credit. I'm playing catch up in the meanwhile, and am as far as Proven Guilty in my re-listen.

Unfortunately, James Marsters isn't reading Ghost Story. Apparently Penguin Audio couldn't schedule the time with him. I listened to the sample they have up there and was disappointed. James is Harry Dresden for me.

I know.. I'm just so used to them as Audiobooks, I'm willing to take the risk.

I hear ya. They exist exclusively as Audiobooks for me, but I just couldn't do it. I'll probably dead tree this one.
