Arkane's Dishonored

Thanks for the tips everyone. I just started again it has already become High Chaos. I am not going to worry about it for now, just want to enjoy the game and finally finish.

To repeat some and elaborate some: Going for no-kill your first time through is a recipe for frustration. Even if you don't plan to replay and want to stick to low chaos, you are allowed some kills. Some of the story choices also change the chaos level, so the amount of kills isn't set in stone... but you definitely have a fair amount of leeway.

Getting the sleep arrows that work on alerted enemies is your "get out of jail free" card for when you c*ck up. Work towards those as well as advancing Blink and Stop Time... I think Garden Ninja's assessment of which skills are more useful is spot on.

After finishing the game you can replay levels over and over to get those really tough stealth trophies.

So I played through this on PS3, but bought the remaster and plan on playing it before the sequel. So you can go back and replay each mission and as long as you get no-kill/low chaos/whatever that will count towards the trophy you are attempting to earn? Hope that made sense.

It's tough to get through the beginning at low chaos unless you replay it. You don't know what you're doing yet. Plenty of time to turn it around... if you want to.

If I was going to do things all over, though?... I'd go with high chaos my first playthrough and low chaos on a second one. I ended up basically replaying the game two or three times anyway. (In reality, I did Low Chaos, then High Chaos, then a ghost/no-kill run.)

If I understand you, as I recall, yes this is the case.

I did low-chaos first, since stealth is my default. I didn't worry about ghost or no-kill, but I did keep my kill count as low as possible. It was a fantastic experience for me.

I immediately restarted and did a high chaos, murderfest run. It was both much shorter, and super fun to cut loose with all the toys I didn't play with on my first run through. I get why everyone recommends you go high chaos first, but there's something to be said for building the anticipation by doing it second.

I can't imagine doing high chaos first simply because you'll be moving so much more slowly and seeing more of the game while you do low chaos. There's a great story and a fantastic world in the game, it's a shame to miss a lot of it because you're sprinting through beheading five people per second.

Low chaos first to savor the experience, then high chaos on a second run when you're just having fun playing with the game mechanics!

I played the definitive edition the past few weeks including all of the DLC all very deliberately in low chaos. It was one my best gaming experiences. This game deserves more love. Can't wait for #2.

They didn't allow the player such freedom because they wanted other forum-goers to dictate how to play

I say the best way to play is however suits you, whatever you find the most comfortable. Worry about the narrative consequences once you've got a grasp on the mechanics, and maybe not even then. You can youtube all the narrative options. You can't youtube the feel of playing how you want.

I think the worst way to play is save-scumming to get achievements, system-level or in-narrative (clean hands, etc).

I think the best way to play is to play Dishonored. Play Dishonored! Dishonored! Wooooo!

Pretty much.

For me, aiming at Low Chaos, but not stressing about achievement nonsense was a satisfying way to play the game. I agree with Elcyion that taking some time helps one immerse oneself in the world building which is so good, High Chaos potentially moves you through too fast. I may one day do a High Chaos play through. I can't imagine ever trying to chase Ghost/Clean hands/blah blah.

My High Chaos run was not fast, I feel I got to see a lot of the world. I used my powers of traversal to get the lay of the land, spot victims, and safe escape routes before the murderstorm descended on everything.

Not saying anyone should play a certain way, just pointing out that High Chaos does not have to be faster or less immersive than a stealth run-through.

I felt like taking everyone out everyone gave me more of an ability to explore every nook and cranny of the world and get a chance to know the levels better. If I'm trying to stealth through a level, it frequently means making a break when I get a chance, and not spending a lot of time hanging out in an area looking for things.

Of course, ultimately, play how you want!... but when you enjoy a game so much, it's hard not to want to talk about how you did it and how you maybe wish you'd done it and how you want to hug it and kiss it and sleep with it in your bed.

Sure, if you don't mind your bed reeking of brined hagfish.

Should we gather for whiskey and cigars tonight?

Indeed, I believe so.

You should bathe. I can smell you from here.

Do you think you'll get your own squad after what happened last night?

How old did you say your sister was?

If I was you I would move a little further away from that barrel of whale oil...

Just started playing Dishonored for the first time. You guys, why didn't you tell me how great this game was?

It's like Thief had sex with Bioshock on a bed with Cthulhu sheets.

In other words, it's a blast.

It's so good. I started replaying it on PS4 because I want to finish the DLC. It's one of my favorite games of all time and only grows in my esteem as time goes on.

Spoiler:

Happy Dishonored 4th of July

You shut your whore mouth!

Oh, actually...that's pretty accurate.

Also saw that the best edition for playstation is now 19.99 permanently on psn.

I'm always glad to see someone get into this game, even after all these years. Good time, Budo, too, because the sequel will be coming out soon.

Guess what I've been up to in @Dishonored? I'm basically the Butcher of Dunwall.

Hey all,
Just started Dishonored and so happy! This is so much like Thief, better than the last two of that series. I was wondering though if the story is better with high or low chaos?
I just ghosted level one with clean hands. I noticed it is nigh impossible to get all the coins with stealth, since many are on guards surrounded by more guards, or they are in the wide open. I like to be a completist, but I guess there is no achievement for it. Still, very satisfying!

You get a far better (in terms of, more optimistic) story ending via the low chaos route. High chaos ends up being (literally AND figuratively) darker in resolution. Also the Canon route through the game into Dishonored 2 is the low chaos one FWIW.

I'm biased of course - I've never played it high chaos myself in any of my various play-throughs.

How does the low to high chaos meter work? Does it fluctuate or is there a high mark that once reached never lowers?

I'm thinking of making a start on this. Depending on how my now quite ancient PC can handle things. Dishonored was gifted to me, by concentric, some two and a half years ago. I never did attempt to run it. The room the computer was in got repurposed as a spare bedroom. My PC gaming came to a screeching halt.

Now that I have an area, a whole separate room in fact, for a computer desk and a chair, it's time to reacquaint myself with this forgotten realm that is PC gaming. Once I reinstall Windows 10. Best get around to that.

I believe that there is a threshold of missions that you have to complete with "high chaos", and that each of those missions has its own threshold of kills needed to mark it as high chaos, with the way you accomplish mission objectives also contributing greatly to the chaos level of that mission.

It's all possible that all of those mission level chaos's just get aggregated into one lump sum, rather than mattering on a mission by mission basis, I don't know if it was ever specified as one way or the other, but my understanding was it was the former.

I typically killed 5-7 grunts per stage and never strayed into high chaos. I think what you do with the main target gets a lot of weight.
