Google+ Catch-All

If anyone has any spare invites I would love to kick the tires (matthewvalentine(at)gmail.com)

Anyone who has an invite but is waiting to get in, I just managed to get in (I heard about the window of opportunity via a tweet from Gary Whitta). Go go go go!

Not sure how much truth there is to it, but from what I heard, the invite window gets refreshed every hour.

That's how I got in, at least... by checking my invite link every top of the hour, or a minute or two before the hour.

Does everyone have invite powers? I'm in, but I can't seem to send an invite out to my wife; the first day, I was able to at least bring up a window by double-clicking on her name, only to be told that invites were disabled. Now, I don't even have that.

I'm in!

Also in! Pretty slick.

Per Google+ Tweets:

Google+ is now open to anyone with a Google account. http://t.co/5qVu4Eh and sign up! #GooglePlus

But it's not working. Still looks the same as before with the "Keep me posted" red button.

I'm in, thanks Spunior!

So how are we doing a GWJ circle? (Are we?)

Edit: Nevermind. I should just Google things.

Same here

Seems even with an invite it's not so easy. Still, I'd love to try my luck. If anyone would be so kind: dbhermes(at)gmail(dot)com

I'd love an invite if anyone has. painthappens at the gmail dot com!

(You can look at my profile for an example.)

How do you have that set up for privacy? Is there an opt-in/out to put your profile out for general consumption? Do you have control over who sees what, etc?

You can control practically everything on the page on a more-or-less per-section basis. You can make things visible to "public", "your extended circles", "your circles", "only you", or "custom" (in which case you can choose specific circles and individuals who can see that, just like you can do with a G+ post.)

The following are the things you don't have that control over:

1) Your name (or whatever you put in the name field, anyway), which must be public.
2) The "brief description of you" under your name (although you can leave that blank), which must be public.
3) Gender, which must be public. (?!? Why, I don't know. But at least you can choose "Other".)

4) Your "in my circles" section on the left. Instead of the normal controls, here you can choose which of your circles people in the "in my circles" section will show, and whether to show them to everyone on the web or to only people who are in one of your circles. You can also opt to show or not show people who have you in their circles (with a bit less control: I presume it shows each person P where if the viewer went to P's profile, they would see you in P's "in my circles" section.)

5) Nickname (which isn't actually a nickname, it's a short name for Google to use to refer to you but only sometimes? It's never public, anyway.)
6) Search visibility (which is a toggle, basically, of whether you show up in searches for people on Google, I guess.)

The things that you *do* have control over are: Introduction (long text), Bragging Rights (short text), Occupation (short text), Employment History (list of: employer, job title, year range), Education History (list of: school name, course of study, year range), Places Lived (list of: city name, displayed as map), Home Contact Info (list of: address/phone/fax/etc.), Work Contact Info (ditto), Relationship (selection box), Looking For (checklist), Birthday, Other Names (list of: short text).

You have the full control I described above over each of those, although not the sub-parts. So, for example, you couldn't have members of your Friends circle be able to see your work address and phone number, but have members of the public only able to see your work phone number.

In the case of the "Other Names", everybody can see all of my other names (which includes only "Hypatian (GWJ)"). If I wanted, I could make that GWJ-only, but it would make it harder to search for me as a goodjer. If I had other other names that I didn't want to share with the world, I'd have to choose whether to remove my GWJ handle from the list or change who can see it or what.

Not perfect, but the flexibility is pretty good. The only thing I find really weird is the "your gender is public, no matter what" thing.

Just got in after a couple days of refreshing. If you're still waiting, maybe check right now.

Worked! Thank you.

Thanks! Got in right away now

Finally in! Now I have to find other people who've got in...

I have a bunch of invites, send me a pm if you want one.

Man. That "it's open for everyone" message was apparently just a massive tease

I was going to avoid begging for an invite, but I guess if anybody has one to spare I'd be much obliged if you could shoot one to thinj825 at gmail dot com.

sent

Thanks, Cobble!

Why are there 2 threads?

This was the first one then shortly thereafter another was created in "everything else".

I like it a lot so far. It's still super-early, but I think it has potential. I know it was asked above, but how do we add a GWJ circle without just creating one ourselves?

It has that nice and clean new technology smell! Let's not tarnish it up with corporations and bloat-apps yet!

Can anyone spare an invite? I'm super interested and would love to check it out!

My email is Derek.Raponi at gmail.com

Anybody know how to see the members of other peoples circles your a member of? I'm thinking it would be nice to be able to see other Goodjers in your GWJ circle that I'm a member of so I can add them to my GWJ circle.

Like seeing the friends of friends on Facebook but by circle.

For the nickname in a circle thing, you'd have to have a way to keep the anonymous nature of circle membership. So when I add a Goodjer to my GWJ circle, I would need to nick name him at that point. So a better suggestion to Google that I plan to make is to allow the other names feature to be presented on circle addition. That way if I add Seth to my GWJ circle, I'd pick the GWJ other name. Then if I added someone to both, perhaps I'd select the realname for the other circle? The confusion would come if I picked 2 different name representations for someone and the post appeared on the consolidated stream. It could work, but they'd have to basically add meta data to the other names field to make it clean.

This. I made a GWJ circle for myself, but it's not easy to know what real-world name belongs to which Goodjer. I named myself Sithload GWJ for the time being - which will eventually confuse other people as G+ gets more popular in my less-cool and technically hip social circles.

Also, I'd like to see a better way to add mass groups of people. When I searched GWJ, I found everyone who's put GWJ in the Other Names field, but I had to add them one at a time. That was tedious after four pages. Maybe there's another way to do it, but I haven't found it yet.
