My one casting suggestion: Clancy Brown as the hound. He'd rock that role so hard.

I'm going to have to say no. He's done that role SO much, it would almost be expected. I think we should get a new face in the cruel, stupid-yet-not, bastard role.

He might be a bit too old for the part at this point, and I'd honestly have a hard time separating him from Mr. Krabs since I've heard him do that voice for years now.

Finally confirmation. I think Dinklage is going to be awesome and I even pictured him as I read the script (posted last page) and everything just fit. He definitely does not fit the image from the book, but then who ever does in these deals? From what I've seen of his work I think he'll be perfect and I wish this was coming this Fall. Sigh.
Excellent. I recognize him from 30 Rock, but know him best from Prince Caspian. I think the look he pulled off in Caspian speaks volumes for his ability to look like Tyrion (as in blonde).
Forgot to mention: last week I finally received my copy of 2009 Song of Ice and Fire calendar signed by GMMR, the man himself.

I'm a big fan of his file compression technology.

Only 4 months late, eh?

Lol. Oh dear.
Lol GMMR. That's what happens when I am posting from a phone.
Yes, 7 months old late actually. Long story. A huge scandal for Dabel Brothers Publishing.
This thread has motivated me to go through the novel another time. So I'm listening to them as I commute. One thing that I like about Martin's writing is that it doesn't really matter if I like or empathize with the characters. I was Female Doggoing about Catelyn Stark earlier, but listening to her now, I see that her role is very well designed. She's an example of the Tully words and an example of how that sort of discipline needs a civil society to support it.
Anyway, I'm once again enjoying a trip through the seven kingdoms. The way that Martin doesn't play favorites with his characters is rare and the best I've read in a fantasy novel since Guy Kay's Tigana.
So I'm listening to them as I commute.
Audible? I think I need to do this.
Audible? I think I need to do this.
I have the first 3 books through Audible and Feast on CD. I've found that I prefer buying CDs and ripping them to buying through Audible, but IIRC Audible is much cheaper. Roy Dotrice is a skilled reader. The guy who read AFFC is adequate, but Dotrice is really good.

$52.50 per book...that's rather steep. (Coming from someone who's never bought an audiobook.)

If you sign up for Audible's trial (here) you get one free credit.
Oh, and you can always get em from your library. Remember those?

It is steep, but the price is somewhat inflated. I had a hard time finding the actual price folks pay, but if you've never bought an audible.com book before, the price is about $40. If you buy one of their subscription accounts, you get part of the book for free (Martin's books are so long, they count as multiple volumes, FYI) and the rest at 30% below list. When I bought my copies, Audible's system worked differently and you didn't need to pay to get 30% off list.
You can download the book from iTunes for $41, which is more reasonable, if you use itunes. (Can't stand it, personally) Barnes and Noble has it for $30, but it still looks like it is DRM'd up and has to use a proprietary system to download. You can also get it direct from Random House for $40, same download set up.
The problem with getting it from the library is that the book, for whatever stupid marketing reason, was only published on cassette, never on CD. So ripping it will be a pain in the ass. You could check out the cassettes and then download the torrent and save the effort if you are into that sort of thing.
Anyway, I really enjoy audio books, but the Martin books are a PITA to buy for whatever reason. Normally when I want to listen to something, I will look to check out CDs from my library first, then check the library's digital download system. Otherwise there are relatively few books that I purchase, mainly just ones that I'll listen to over and over.
This is the problem I have with audiobooks in general -- they're obscenely, unreasonably expensive. I complain, because my son has a huge audiobooks habit. He literally can't go to sleep without his iPod cranking out Douglas Adams or JRR or R. Heinlein or R. Zelazny or. Lately, thanks to Escapist Magazine's Yahtzee, he developed an appreciation of British-flavored humor and got hooked on Jerome K. Jerome and PG Wodehouse. And all that stuff is ridiculously EXPENSIVE. No wonder that the industry is up in arms against the text-to-speech feature in Kindle 2 -- it undermines their rather profitable racket.

What drives me nuts is that they are really, really expensive, but I understand why. You have the intellectual property of the actual story being read - no reason to expect that to be less than the book, from an author/publisher's point of view. On top of that, you have the performance of the reader(s) to account for. Roy Dotrice does a great job in the Martin books, and Jim Dale is phenomenal in the Harry Potter/Peter Pan books - so it's not that I want to deny them pay for excellent work, it just stinks that it costs me so much to do so.
Your son falls asleep to the works of Heinlein, and you speak of money?!? Wake up, sir, for you are living the dream!

I dunno, I fell asleep reading some of those Lazarus Long books. As much as I love some of his works Heinlein has some real stinkers.

My dream will be realized when he starts to appreciate golden age of Russian classics. Better yet, by reading in print rather than listening to an audiobook.
More ice and fire info... looks like they got a video game in the works now as well

Hmm.. Console and PC - that's always a bad sign. Low magic fantasy world, but highly detailed. No mention of it being an MMO - that's good. Of course, with this world, the game is probably downloaded to your console/PC, and if you die in the game, it erases the whole thing. Honestly, I think the perfect Song of Ice and Fire game would be a mod for Mount and Blade.
I wonder what direction they will take this in first. Atras I think you have the right idea, they should just licence the M&B engine for much of it. That way they could get in RPG and maybe a Myth style RTS in one game. Or they should have just had Bungie do it. How amazing might that have been?
Hey if you guys like audio books you should check out some of the story podcasts out their. Pendant Productions has a bunch of batman, superman, and wonder woman stuff. Sonic Society has a mixed of stuff. I forget the name of the place I heard the Dr Who stuff from but it was darn good. Do a search for Old Wounds if you like FireFly also.
Hmmm, Cyanide looks like they are tilted toward tongue in cheek humor, although they also run a couple of sports series (Rugby and Cycling). I have one of the Cycling Manager Titles, but I didn't play it enough to form an opinion of the studio.
Their most recent work was Loki. Anyone play that?

I love checking out "paudio dramas" while I take care of busywork at the office. There are some really good ones out there if you're willing to dig a little.
Leviathan Chronicles has some incredible production values. It's an interesting and action packed sci-fi yarn.
For you Whedonites out there I present: Old Wounds. This is a fan produced audio drama based on Firefly. Some of the voice talent does a surprisingly good impersonation of the real cast.
Darker Projects has some good episodic content on it as well.
In regards to ASOIAF I am very excited so far. I read the script and aside from some minor quibbles I was mostly pleased with it. I love Dinklage as Tyrion and I think he's going to do an amazing job.
My main concern is the script writers having a complete story to tell. I don't pray but if I did it would be for GRRM's health. This story is too damned good to not have an ending.
Oh, and if you've never read it make sure to check out Fevre Dream. I just got done reading it and really enjoyed it. I was worried it was going to be cliche but this book is definately a GRRM book. Wonderful characterization and fearless plotting.
Peace.
In the next episode, Bran Stark whacks Tyrion Lannister at the Bada Bing!, while Daenaerys Targeryn decides whether or not to break up with Mr Big.
Tyrion does like the ladies.

I chuckled at the notion that Ice might be a "neck massager"
