Only for Beta though, which is a bit of a pain in the ass. I actually try not to intentionally violate NDAs but how the heck am I supposed to keep straight in my head what I've seen in Alpha that isn't visible during Beta weekends? /sigh

:P

You might want to grab a snack.

The temptation to fire it up while I'm working at home is strong. I finished downloading it this morning.

Well, not surprisingly the servers are groaning under the load so the play is less enjoyable than what I'm used to. Seeing as how I'm not really that enamored of running the first few quests for the umpteenth time I thought I'd post some no-longer-under-NDA frequently requested information.

UI: It's the worst part of the game (IMO). This was designed as a unified UI experience for console and PC which means it's horribly clunky by PC users standards. There is no click-and-drag, if you think you need to drag an icon to a slot then you should be looking for a button saying "equip" instead after you highlight the item or ability. (Perks is the first thing you'll likely run into needing this action.)

Logging out of the game is one of the most ridiculous processes you'll ever see. You hit escape to bring up the menu, then you need to HOLD the spacebar to bring up the "EGO Menu" wheel, from there you select Settings, and under the Account tab of the Settings menu you'll see options to Log Out and Exit Game. (Yes, Alt+F4 works better!)

Character Creation: You're not limited to the hairstyle and face it tosses at you, there are detail customization options if you look up at the upper left of your screen there are various icons you can click to access hairstyle, facial customization, etc.

Archetype selection just changes your starting cosmetic outfit and what weapon you are given at first, it has no bearing on how your character continues to develop. I recommend ex-military because the assault rifle is one of the more useful starting weapons. Choosing scavenger gets you a sniper rifle, but you get a better one in the first few quests regardless of your archetype.

Tutorial: This is just for learning, there's no loot and no XP in the first area. Just run through it ignoring all the enemies you can until you hit the final event. Most of the enemies in the area won't even aggro unless you shoot them first.

Random tidbits:

There's no falling damage in the game, regardless of whether you're on foot or in a vehicle. Go ahead and jump off mountains and launch your quad through the sky to land on an enemy camp 300 feet below. It won't hurt a bit and is stupidly fun.

Swimming is only possible VERY close to shore. Landing in water will instantly dismiss your vehicle, and if you go away from shore your vision will dim and the game will kill you VERY fast.

Death costs you some scrip (Defiance's gold coin equivalent) and in Beta it's pretty insignificant. Dying and running back can be a perfectly viable way of clearing out a tough nest of enemies if nobody is around to help you.

You can self-revive once every 10? minutes or so. There's an icon to the left of your health and shield indicator showing you if the ability is available, or if not it "refills" to show your timer. It looks like a little stick figure. Another player can revive you if they're nearby and that costs you nothing.

I'm sure there's more that can be posted without violating the NDA on Alpha, but I don't want to start out writing a book. Others can chime in, or if folks have specific questions I'll check back and answer what I can.

you can use a shortcut to bring up the EGO wheel so it's not quite as cumbersome. Just have to remember where it is.

What is the combat mechanics most like? WoW? Tera? TSW? GW2?

Borderlands or Firefall. It's an action TPS, two weapon slots, shield, special ability activation.

So, I can't stand the over the shoulder view, and logging out is a pita. I am interested in the tv show, but I'll pass on the game.

Well, logging out has easy workarounds, but if you don't like third person shooters then you should obviously pass on it.

What a difference between PC and the PS3. I started with the PS3 beta and hated every second of it. It was ugly, glitchy and made little sense. I then played it on PC and had a righteous blast. I preordered and stopped playing so i wont ruin anything.

The craptastic controller-friendly UI would lead you to believe that this was developed with consoles as the lead platform. As you've discovered though that's not actually true and the console versions are badly lagging behind the PC in development and testing. Everything I hear makes me think Xbox and PS3 players are going to have a rocky April 2.

Played a bit on the PC, gonna try the Xbox version tomorrow. Seems like all the stuff available in the Defiance store is only cosmetic, is that the only way to change the look of the character?

You can earn some cosmetic items in game, mission rewards, and purchase some for script, the first merchant machine has some. Of course, no telling what will change between now and retail.

Can anyone explain what that second currency is next to script on the lower left. I understand the script as well as the gold colored uber currency to be used in the defiance store. But there is another one that I currently have as 7/75 and not sure what its for. i noticed I gained a couple more after completing an arkfall event.

Looks like Lockbox keys, you can use them to unlock various boxes that release uncommon and rare weapons.

Looks like the stage 2 box costs 8 keys and 1000 scrip. Each one get more expensive from there.
you can trade in the Green currency (Ark knowledge?) for 1000/ key.

The green is gulanite crystals. Gulanite is needed for the modding of weapons. In the game lore it's the primary source of power for Arktech.

The gold currency for the RMT store is called "bits".

There are also various currencies (or tokens if you want to think of them that way) that you earn for doing missions on behalf of specific factions. Each faction has special equipment you can purchase with their currency + scrip.

Another question, how exactly does a machinist differ from a veteran differ from a hunter..etc? Is it just starter weapons? Since EGO powers are the same for each I am confused as to the point of these "classes"

There's no difference other than starting weapons and the cosmetic-only outfit you start out wearing. It's more of an RP decision than anything else. Like I mentioned above if you pick solely based on starting weapons I personally think going ex-military for the assault rifle is the way to go.

you can also pick based on what weapon type you want to level up... get extra points into it early

I had some good fun playing this during the beta, I didn't realize there were dungeons you could queue for till 10 min before I called it in for the weekend.

Are the purple font weapons and items the strongest?

Orange is the strongest, the purple, then blue, then green, then white. Pretty much the standard MMO color scheme.

The first 14 minutes of the premiere are up for viewing on Syfy now.

The CG backgrounds looked really bad, as in "this is distracting me from the show it's so bad." I'm hoping that's just due to lousy compression or something similar.

I found it interesting that the first 14 minutes of the premiere tied into the game events already:

Spoiler:

Where they use the crystal that you helped them get, which they then ran off with, to activate the Teraspire and obtain the orb.

Thanks, I never even found any orange ones. I bought a bunch of lockboxes and was able to get all purple items.

While distracting it was cool that it seemed to come from in game graphic assets. Already had a feel for the terrain they were going through.

As of this moment there are finally 122 arkfall codes available out of the 120 needed to unlock all the various free characer upgrades on the My EGO page. See below for the thread URL, the boards don't want to let me use it in a link. You can scan for posts by Dead_Phoenix and get the codes from his forum signature.
