The Pile's Empty... April Fools!

Pages

I felt I had to jump in on the lame April Fools joke attempts. This one was even lamer as I didn't get the thread created until April 2nd.

We're starting to get some new releases that are crowding the pile time. I know I've spent more time on new releases recently. Just try to carve out a little time for an old friend who didn't get played with as much as it should have (wait, that sounded dirty).

If you're interested, m0nk3yboy, has the 12 month pile plan thread over here.

A quick reminder, in order to be considered "Pile of Shame" the game needs to be at least three months old. Otherwise, it's just a new game you haven't gotten to playing yet.

Also, if you are curious about some of the previous threads, Pick's of the Pile, etc... Please go here and check out the Google doc I setup.

Let's get on to the games!

This month's Pick of the Pile is

[size=30][b]Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

"150 years in the future, war and destruction have left the world in ruins with few humans remaining and nature having reclaimed the world. Mysterious slave ships harvest the dwindling population and take them out west, never to return.
Trip, a technologically savvy young woman has been imprisoned by a slave ship but manages to escape using her mental prowess. Monkey, a strong, brutish loner and fellow prisoner also gets free by virtue of his raw power and brawn. Trip quickly realizes that Monkey is her ticket to freedom and is her only hope to survive her perilous journey back home. She hacks a slave headband and fits it on Monkey, linking them together. If she dies, he dies and her journey has now become his." (Enslaved Official Site)

Yikes. Oof. Etc. I didn't touch my game from last month.

Let's go ahead and roll Darksiders over from last month. I promise this time! I swear it!

I failed to complete Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (PC) last month. That said, I think I'm about halfway through the title, so should be able to bang it out for April.

I just started Super Scribblenauts (DS) a few evenings ago, and am having a load of fun with it - I expect to finish it this month as well.

Put me down for Just Cause 2, please.

I am going old school and rocking Viva Pinata. Sassy.

I'm absolutely determined to get through Winter Voices : Episode 0 - such an interesting concept (an RPG based around the stages of Grief with a really nifty art style) but it's REALLY tough going. Not because it's difficult but because the turn based combat is so....freakin'....slow and the dialogue is overly-elaborate (and badly translated in places I think). Still, might be tempted to at least grab the next episode - if they improved the combat for that, then it might be worth a look.

I might have another stab at trying to get through XIII again as well, since I grabbed a fresh copy off of GOG the other day. Assuming it runs.

I had to skip last month's pile run because I moved and now I'm overwhelmed with guilt! Put me down for Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth... again. I got it beat this time. I swear!

Carrying over The Witcher. Near to done with Chapter 2. Definitely want to try and dent this at least an hour each day. I'm putting a couple more points into Focus.

Can I add (in all seriousness) "Sonic Adventure 2" for the Dreamcast?

Crysis: Warhead for me. Gotta do something to keep me from adding Crysis 2 to the pile for a while.

I want to jump back into the pile thread. I will be going after Enslaved and Beyond Good and Evil HD. I got a decent start on them both.

I'm jumping back into the pile as well to get some classics done. Put me down for Deus Ex, PC.

I did finish Dragon Age: Awakening last month even though it never got marked off. I'm still slogging through my grand campaign in Europa Universalis though; 70+ hours in and still going. Man, that game takes a long time.

I'll probably add something else to the pile though I haven't decided what yet. I dug into my closet and found the big box-o-games in there that I've had sitting around for a while. I need to update my master list and decide what from it gets to go next.

I apparently like incredible pain, so I'm going to try to finally see the ending of Adventures of Lolo III (NES) - a game I've been working on off and on for half a year. I'm so thankful that youtube exists. I am currently on screen 16-2 (out of 17-10), but it is fairly certain that I would never have made it past level 5.x or 6.x without it or a really great walkthrough. Lolo looks cute, but it is without mercy.

I'll also aim for completing Transformers (PS2). It's a tough, but well made action game and I'm already a good ways in. The levels so far are massive and have taken at least an hour each. Unlocking some original-series PSA-s is also a treat.

Finally, Interstate '76 (PC) gets taken for a whirl. I originally bought it in 1997, but barely played it. Picked it up during a GoG sale along with the Arsenal Pack expansion which I'm also declaring, and recently installed it, only to encounter....issues. After installing alternate glide drivers and using a CPU throttling program (CPU Grabber - set to about 95% load), most of the problems are now solved and I hope I can get to the end without any further issues. Currently on mission 5.

Wikipedia says it was ported to the Gamecube as well, so I threw it under multi.

Everything else should be current. Now if I could only figure out what I want to play.

I'll carry over KoTOR and Monkey Island 2 from last month.

I'm about 60% of the way through Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core for the PSP so I'll carry that over from last month. I have started Uncharted 2 as well but let's not go overboard. I think I'm on Chapter 3 so I have a long way to go.

Just finished stage 16.2 in Adventures of Lolo III thanks to a video walkthrough (and it still took almost 20 tries). Only 14 more screens of suffering to go.

If you want to see the insanity of that stage, here you go.

He worked on 16.2 a few times in the previous video and is finally successful from 0:59 onwards. Things are not helped by controls that allow you to easily make or miss an extra half-step in sections that require perfect timing such as 1:39 to 2:04.

Did ANYBODY finish this game before the internet?

I realize I'm pushing a rock up a pile here, but when I played VP I started chasing achievements and it basically ruined the game for me. I messed around with the tools for a long time and had a lot of unfocused fun, and then I started just farming pinatas and turned it into something like a labor camp. Which just slightly more fun than a real one.

Here we go again. Mass Effect 2 and Mother 3. At least one of these two had to die this month.

EDIT:

Oh, what the heck. I started Resident Evil for on the old PS2 at my mother's house last weekend. Might as well put it in here.

Final Fantasy 13 this month...my last console game on the pile. Then comes the HUGE DS RPG pile I've got built up.

I'm currently working through The Witcher (The Penultimate Directors Final We Really Mean It! Version), and still vacationing in Morrowind. Put me down for the former, not the latter. Appears I may never finish Morrowind. More fun to explore than follow the plot!

Dragon Age Origins will be the death of me...

Lets add it to the pile title (again) this month. If I don't finish it, it will finish me.

Finished Winter Voices chapter 0 - was closer to the end of it than I thought.

That's one hell of a weird game. The combat is glacial and the florid writing style seems arty for the sake of being arty but there's an interesting story in there somewhere, the watercolour artwork is fantastic and I love the way your skill tree is designed around a web pattern - with all the skills and abilities based around the various stages of grief (denial, etc). Plus they have the BEST narrator's voice ever.
Going to take a chance and give Chapter 1 a try I think.

[Adventures of Lolo III]

Reminds me of a couple games I played played to death in the early nineties, Chip's Challenge and Spelling Blizzard. Those games were so long I never even came close to beating either. Those two, and maybe a little Carmen Sandiego on the side, were my favorite early computer games.

OK, I'm suffering from gamer's block and I'm not sure what I should play next.

Instead of picking a game, I instead pulled the big box out of the back of the closet and cataloged everything in it.

Allow me to present The Pile.

A lot of the games on that list I have played. A lot I have not. A few I probably can't; I only have them on 5 1/4 inch floppy and when was the last time you saw one of those.

But anyway, I have decided to crowdsource my pile for this month. Look at the document, look at the games I haven't played and tell me which ones need to move to the top of the pile. And thanks.

My Recommendations from your list after a quick skim :

Amnesia : Dark Descent
Silent Hill : Shattered Memories
The Longest Journey
The Dig

Can't go wrong with any of those.

I'm carrying over Sam & Max Season 1 from -- hell, from January, at this point. I've been eyes-deep in Dragon Age II, so not much else is catching my attention.

I would declare something else, but I'm heading into the last four weeks of production on a musical for my high school, and I expect I'll be lacking the energy to chew food this month, let alone play video games. We'll see how things shake out come the middle of the month.

I'd consider giving these a shot:

Arx Fatalis - because I've began playing it twice but got distracted and want to live vicariously. Perhaps a glowing review will re-motivate me.
Ben There, Dan That - because it's short and funny and will be a nice lead-in to its better sequel.
Call of Juarez - because I just beat this one myself and had a really good time with it. Also, it's not too long.
Riddick: Dark Athena - because I beat it last year and loved it. Also - shouldn't take long.
Ghostbusters - see reasons for previous two. I played on normal, but most recommend easy.

You just have so many good ones that I could make a list almost as long as your original list. Tough to go wrong with stevenmack's choices too.

Edit:
A clarification. The Transformers game I'm playing is a PS2 exclusive from 2004; not a movie-based title.

Spent the last 6 hours playing Dragon Quest 9 and I'm almost positive I'm at the last dungeon. Just got massively owned by a sub-boss and am thinking I need to grind some levels before attempting again.

I found that levels aren't a big factor in downing bosses in that game - blind luck is a bigger factor. If the boss wants to eff you over, it will....

So long as you're about lvl 40 across the board, you should be able to kill everything in the storyline.
