Stan's Lounge Private Server Thread

Getting home late tonight is going to make me very very sad

Also, thanks for taking the time to get this set up, Homer, I know we all appreciate it!

Tonight! Private server!

Be there!

Map recommendation: ctf_trains. I know I've recommended this before, but here goes again. It has lots and lots of trains. It's fun!

Huh. Didn't know the server had its own thread. Well I've noticed a lot of rtv going on when I've played the last week or so. Guess I am wondering about the map rotation time/round length?

Some servers I played on have like a time and round limit both. Either 15 minutes or 2 rounds. So if one map drags out and takes forever, it won't repeat. But if someone wins a couple quick ones, it will switch up. Not sure if that's some mod or if that's in the basic map rotation options?

But either way maybe it needs some tweaking. Seems like we're an impatient bunch and more than 1-2 runs of any map gets a RTV going. So maybe just set it up so we never play anything more than twice anyway?

I updated the MOTD on the private to a boring text message, since it was pointing to stansloungetf2.com, which no longer exists. If you guys want throw out new suggestions to update Tempest's old MOTD image, go for it!

Yeah, I think a change to twice on CP/PL/PLR maps to allow each team one chance to play as defense and attack, and perhaps one round of three captures for CTF (which is still hard to accomplish when folks go engie right away) would be a good idea.

I vote for this

I am Rebel Blob, and I'm here to ask you a question. Is a man not entitled to play a class of his choosing? 'No!' says the man playing heavy, 'You must play medic.' 'No!' says the man playing engineer, 'You must play pyro.' 'No!' says the man playing sniper, 'You must play anything else.' I rejected those answers; instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose... Stan's Lounge, a server where the spy would not fear redundancy, where the player would not be bound by petty scoring, Where the classes would not be constrained by balance! And with the class of your choosing, Stan's Lounge can become your server as well.

As long as its ok with Rebel.

It doesn't happen all the time, though, I think 2 rounds of CTF would be fine most of the time.

Agreed.

That is a nice choice. Simply add the tagline "....just don't steal my metal."

I'm just here to mark this thread for future reference.

I'd also like to see the swamp pack added to the private if only to try them out.

Maps from the Swamp Pack are bzipped and have been added to the mapserver.

They won't show on either the pub or private without config changes, but at least they're available.

I think we make next Friday swamp night. Swamp maps only.

Next friday as in 2 days? or 9?

And boy, arena killed the server tonight. It went to arena... watchtower maybe? I forget. And when we tried rtv, all we got was arena maps. Needless to say, everyone decided it was time to go to bed. Is that normal? It seems bad.

Sure, if you guys like it.

The pub is borked at the moment. Whatever was changed, it put everything to arena maps, all the time, and the 2001 sound got old REALLY fast.

I realize this it the private server thread but...

Yeah the 2001 sound had me searching for the pubbie to mute the first time I heard it. The second time I stayed to listen through it all but from then on I just extended my inter-map "break" a little longer to make sure that it was over before I popped back in.

Oh, oops. I got my tabs mixed up, thought this was the TF2 thread.

9 days. 2 is not enough for people to get the map pack and set it up. Plus, I'll be spending the next couple days getting my computer back up and running. I'm not going to have an event night when I can't be there. I need to supervise.

Could someone explain to a steam newbie how to update maps/whatever else I need off the server before I join?

Plan-ahead solution:
1) Go to http://gwj.skulljackpot.com/maps/
2) Download the maps to your TF2 maps directory (for example, C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\***YOUR STEAM ID***\team fortress 2\tf\maps)

Slacker solution:
1) TF2 will download the maps automatically when the server switches to a map you don't have. (Note that this will cause a noticeable wait in some cases, while the map downloads. Also, there were reports that Frontier was not properly served this past week, but I've passed the info along to EvilHomer to get any config issues sorted out).

I have been a slacker so far, not realizing that there was a plan ahead solution. Now at least I have a choice

Slacker solution will also give you an error after it finishes downloading the map for the first time, so you can lose your spot in the server =P

We can just leave them in that bz2 format? All my other maps in that directory are .bsp. And 7zip doesn't seem to extract that bz2.

WinRAR does, at least for me.

I think you have to extract the files.... I believe TF2 will download and extract them for you automatically, but I don't think it will find map files in the local directory that end with anything but .bsp. It definitely doesn't work to leave them in .bz format on the actual game server.

And, yes, Winrar will work fine.

Ah well now I feel silly. Because I tried one of the other bz2 files and it extracted fine with 7zip.

It's just the arena_blackwood file that says it is not an archive. Something wrong with that download maybe?

All the others extracted fine. Looks like I'm up to date, ready for trains or whatever.

arena_blackwood says its corrupt for me.

Lies.

More correctly, I downloaded ctf_trains automatically tonight when I joined and got no errors - though in hindsight, I kind of wish I had

[Edit: I'll see if there's another arena_blackwood I can post to the mapserver, but that won't happen until morning]

I think Swamp Night is going to have to wait. I came home last night to a wet basement. My computer is sitting in a corner with my 360 and I've been vacuuming up water and moving things around all day (and much of last night). I got someone out today to start working on trenching it and got all our carpet up (Legato squares FTW) but I don't think I'll have a real computer for a week. On the plus side I did find four bottles of beer I brewed a while ago. Hopefully it's still good and one of the ones I liked when it was good.
