Day 26: Sins

Garg! Red Dead Redemption 2 sucked me in yesterday, and I missed my first day. I hope to catch up tomorrow.

I really want to learn more about shading. I just don't feel like I'm doing anything close to the right thing with it as is. After Inktober is over, I'm going to hunt down some tutorials and see if I can improve.

Check out Alphonso Dunn on YouTube. His stuff is really good, and I've learned a good amount from him.

Thanks. I was actually starting to check out his stuff last night a bit. (I had seen you mention him earlier in the thread.) It looks really good, and I was thinking that yes, I'd start with him.

Cracking on with the 3x3cm catch ups... new theme for this page...

See if I can get up to date by the end of the month

Day 27: No Prompt

The prompt list I've been working from omitted a prompt for the 27th for whatever reason, so I took the opportunity to try my hand at this shading tutorial of Alphonso Dunn. This was good practice for me, and feels like what I should be spending some time on.

I have more time tonight to do the drawing from the 28th, which would get me all caught up heading into the last three days.

Day 28: Doll

All caught up!

Day 29: Robot

Whew. This took much longer than I thought it would. Balance got skewed a bit as things went on, but I think I learned a lot. Fun times, two more days to go!

Day 30: Clown

Just a quick drawing with the dip pens and brushes today. Lots of things to do tonight.

You guys are totally killing it!

Good stuff Trichy! I can see some development in your style over the course of these weeks. Stay the course!

Only one more to go, congrats on those of you who stayed the course!

I think if i hadn't had that dead zone in the middle while i was on a break i'd have been able to keep up the momentum, but ah well! Next time.

Holy crap. I did the whole month.

Congrats Trichy! It's been fun seeing your daily drawings, and seeing the improvement you've been making. Great stuff!

Day 31: Demon

Found this demon drawing (annoying Pinterest link) on the Interwebs and gave it a shot.

Inktober = Done! Woot!

Congrats GBlitz and Trichy for managing the full 31!

Made it to 22, which is 20 more than last year, even if a few were quadruplet catch ups!

Trichy, loved your landscapes and GBlitz your drawings of hands properly impressed!

Where are you all going to go next?

Thanks Bubble!

Congrats on making it to 22! That's still a lot of drawing.

This is next for me...

I just got those too! I'm planning on working through them over the next few months.

Ooh they look quite good.

I think a lot of the guide book stuff comes up in his YouTube videos. I'm not 100% sure that this book was a good purchase. The workbook, however, seems quite helpful.

I'll let you know if I think otherwise, and maybe Trichy can chime in as well, but at the moment I'd be inclined to watch his tutorials online and then just use the workbook.

Dunn's stuff is great. Been a follower of his youtube channel for years.

And once again, congrats on the Inktober winners!

Unfortunately my favourite (quite expensive) pen nib just literally disintegrated on me on tuesday, and I can't get a replacement until i get my next student loan payment. BOO!

Yeah it was more the workbook exercises that intrigued more via "look inside" on Amazon. I'll take a look-see at the vids, ta.

So while I'm still drawing, I'm starting to explore the idea of painting. Watercolor is what I'm leaning towards, and I could use some pointers on getting started, resources, etc.

a few quick tips off the top of my head since i'm going out shortly, can answer in more detail later...

don't settle for cheap materials, because it'll produce poor results even if you're a skilled artist. At least go for some pretty good paper and middle of the road costing paints (student-grade stuff would probably do to start with).

I prefer to tape down the paper i'm painting with using masking tape, that way when you're done you can pull off the tape (carefully) and get a nice neat clean border surrounding your painting.

paint light to dark, since watercolour is transparent. trying it the other way around will ALWAYS produce muddy results.

To blend colours smoothly, use LOTS of water on the paper first then apply colour.

Always use watercolour paper - regular paper will just dissolve or crumple.
you generally have a choice between hot press (super smooth) or cold press (textured). My preference is for hot-pressed paper but ymmv.

It looks to have some good people to check out when it comes to the watercolor medium.

Made a new painting as start of a new collaboration with Bill Harris. Not quite sure what he's going for, but he gave me strict instructions on what he wanted to see in the illustration.

Looks like a poster for "Better Call Saul".
