GWJ League Season Rules

Ranking System:

1. There will be 5 levels of ranks ranging from Rank 1 to Rank 5 with Rank 5 considered the highest rank.
2. Each player will be initially put into a rank based upon their Battle.Net 1v1 Leagues.
1. Bronze = 1
2. Silver = 2
3. Gold = 3
4. Platinum = 4
5. Diamond and Masters = 5

General Overview:

1. Each player will play 5 “Ranked” games within the given month.
1. Players can play more than 5 games a month, but any in excess will be counted towards a tie-breaker score.
2. A player may only play any other player once a season for a “ranked” match. Any games played in excess of the first will count towards the tie-breaker score.
3. A player may play any number of tie-breaker matches.
4. Players can agree to have a match count as a tie-breaker instead of a ranked match as long as it is agreed upon before hand.
2. Points will be awarded to each winning of a match based upon the rank difference between the two players.
1. To determine the number of points awarded, use this formula:
2. 5 + Loser’s Rank - Winner’s Rank
3. The loser of the match is awarded no points.
4. In the case of a draw, each player is awarded half the normal number of points, rounded up.
5. Special Exception:
1. Special exception is used if the rank difference between the two players if greater than 2. (i.e. Rank 4 vs rank 1) and the higher ranked player win.
2. The points awarded are instead added to the tie-breaker score
3. The match does not count towards that players “ranked” matches.
4. However, if the higher ranked player loses, the match counts as one of the ranked matches for the month.
5. The reason behind this is to encourage the higher ranked players to accept challenges from the lower ranked players without “wasting” one of their “ranked” matches. It also keeps the higher ranked player from throwing the game.
6. However, if the higher ranked player wishes, he may have the game count towards one of his “ranked” matches
3. Player’s who participate in the weekly mini-tournaments can receive extra points based on the results of that tournament.
1. 1st place receives 3 extra points
2. 2nd place receives 2 extra points
3. 3rd place receives 1 extra point
4. At the end of the play period, players will be ranked in terms of points won with the tie-breaker points settling any ties.
5. Player rankings are then adjusted based upon season ending positions.
1. Each player will compare his score to the average of the group above and below his current rank.
2. Scoring below the average of the rank below you will move your rank down one.
3. Scoring above the average of the rank above you will more your rank up one.
4. A player may only move one rank each season.

Game Reporting:

1. All game reporting must be entered into this spreadsheet.
2. Posting in the forum thread is fun and all, but if it doesn’t make it into the spread sheet, I won’t count it. This is to make my life easier.
3. If there is some kind of issue with the game, please contact me (and save a game replay).

I added my name to the Tourney Tab of the spreadsheet. I haven't finished my placement matches, but I'm assuming I'll be in the Bronze league, as I'm terrible.

I don't really have a preference as far as format goes, so I'll leave that up to those that have a preferred method.

I've added myself as well.

I liked Luggage's description of setting it into seasons but I don't have the patience to organize such a thing.

Following up with the beta tournament and Tkyl's suggestion here, I'd like to encourage some brainstorming as to which kind of friendly GWJ competition people would be interested in.

Tkyl proposed tournaments separated by the 1v1 division players are in (one for bronze, one for silver etc). This would keep the competition fairly balanced. The problem with this kind of competition is that the majority of players will only be playing the first two or three rounds.

As an alternative, I would propose a league system. A league system has everybody playing the same number of games and depending on the system automatically sorts players into the respective divisions they belong in.
As the most simple solution, we could go with the American system of several divisions being part of a conference and two conferences amounting to a league. The pro is the majority of you would be familiar with the system. The contra is that unless we think of some clever way to switch around players to divisions that fit their needs better, bronze players may encounter gold or platin players regularly.

To remedy that, we could use the system of the BWCL/WC3CL/SC2CL (Broodwar/Warcraft 3/Starcraft 2 Clan League), which is loosely based on the European soccer league systems. Our spin-off would look like this:

  • We would have an Alpha division, which would be the highest (gold and above would be seeded here in the first season) with a set number X of players.
  • Below that, we have two Beta divisions (silver players get seeded here), with the same number X of players each.
  • Below that, we'd have two or four Gamma divisions (depending on the number of bronze players), with the same number X of players as well.
  • We would then have X-1 playdays per season, the same number for every division.
  • Every playday, each player would play somebody new from his division, resulting in everyone playing everybody else once during the season.
  • The playdays would be either one or two weeks long, giving every GWJer enough time to set a time and date with their opponent and play their games.
  • Game mode would be a Best of Three. First map will be set and changes every playday.
  • The second map is chosen by the loser of the first map and consequently, in case of a 1-1, the third by the loser of the second game.
  • For starters, we'd only use official maps from the BNet 1v1 mappool.
  • At the end of a season, the first two of each Beta division (four players total) will play a Bo3 against the bottom four of the Alpha division for their spots. Winners will be in Alpha division next season, losers will play Beta division.
  • Along the same lines, the top two of each Gamma division play the bottom two of the respective Beta divisions for their spots.
  • Depending on the number of people we get, one division would consist of four to eight people. (Even numbers are generally favorable, but not a must.)
  • Depending on the length of the playdays (one or two weeks), one season plus relegation games would last between two and four months.
  • Smaller divisions lead to faster seasons, players ending up in the division of their experience level more quickly and players dropping out being replaced faster. But it also means a smaller pool of potential opponents. To remedy this, we could randomize all divisions of the same level before each season.
  • I'll come up with something how forfeiting will work, how results are reported and how new players can join and old ones can leave the league.
  • Note that the proposed initial seedings were only an example. We'll decide on the exact seedings once we know how many people we'll have participating. Alternately, we'll have a one-time qualification tournament.

What do you guys think?

Edit: Below a simple example, if we only had four people in Alpha and four people in Beta...

No problemo. I haven't found a sweet deal on a US version yet anyway, so I'd be more than glad to do all the administrative stuff like updating the tables and reviewing replays.

I don't think there's going to be a sweet deal on Wings of Liberty until the third game drops and the Battle Chest goes on sale.

I will just watch jealously from the sidelines.

I'm interested. I haven't finished my placement matches yet so I don't know where I'll end up!

Damn Luggage. Those are some tight guidelines.Nice work! I cant wait to get started.

Definitely interested! I haven't played any placement matches yet because I wanted to get gold in all the challenges first, but give me a deadline and it'll be done.

I'm interested. I'm gold league atm, but my entire Starcraft multiplayer experience is those 5 placement matches, so hopefully you'll let me update my league if (and by if, I mean when) I drop to a different league.

Same here.

Yeah, as I said above, the placement matches plus a dozen more would be the best way to measure your experience level. But a one time tournament could do the trick as well.

Right now we're more interested in finding out what the majority of you guys want to do (single elimination tournament, double elimination tournament, league) and how many would want to participate. Once we have a solid idea about that, we'll get down to specific stuff like the qualification/seedings.

I am also trying to find a way to let the EU server guys like MrDevil, Scratched and liquid participate, at least until Blizzard lets us know how the cross-realm feature will go down.

Maybe I missed the post about it, but what is the Regular column intended to convey?

I've signed up for the tourney, though sadly I don't think I have time for a league. I'll update if my league changes soon (which it probably will, I'm ranked pretty high in my 1v1 bronze).

Good question. It's basically asking if we want a regular tournament/league or if it should be one time only. Of course that one is reading tea leafs right now, but it'll still be nice to know.

As you also said correctly, both tourney and league carry their advantages and disadvantages when it comes to player commitment, so we'll see which way the crowd swings and if no clear favorite surfaces, we'll maybe do both.

I'd be down for league play. I do have busy periods that may make it difficult for me to get my games in during a paticular week but in general I should be available.

I'm interested in a spot as well, though I choose to jump into practice matches so I haven't gotten a placement.

I'm not big on single elimination, especially in this game. I don't have a preference beyond that.

A league sounds like a lot to organize. Maybe we should try a tournament first. That way people can dip their toe in the water without making a big long-term commitment. If everyone enjoys the tournament, we'll have a better chance of getting a league off the ground (assuming someone wants to take on the duty of organizing it).

Guess I finally need to do my placements, huh?

I'll hop in so I have motivation to actually play multiplayer.

The problem we had with the DoW2 league was almost entirely week 2+, so limiting scope is probably not a bad idea. People lose interest pretty quick, especially if they've already had a bad season.

Along those lines, if our DoW2 league is any indication, keeping things short and sweet is really the way to go. I made the mistake of having our season run too long; by the time we got to the end partners had dropped, entire teams had dropped and worse, interest had dropped because we already had very clear winners.

This is exciting! Nice job on those descriptions, Luggage. You're a good man, and thorough.

I like the idea of a seed tournament, since I feel like it'll be difficult to predict how the group will even out into leagues. But the soccer league system of a pyramid of groups is a great idea.

I don't think I've been this excited about multiplayer since Bubble Bobble. On the list.

On the list etc, this sounds like an awesome thing.

A seed tournament would be a great idea, that way we can at least do a tournament (to see what the actual interest is like) and it sets up well for doing more if there's continued interest. I'll go with the majority as far as the tournament/season style; whatever works best for everyone.

Hm? No, man, she hit me right here.

Seems it's time to get off my ass and play my 1v1 placements.

Aight, I'm in the spreadsheet now. And subscribing, as such it were. Hopefully this thing gets farther off the ground than the last one did, although admittedly a lot of the wind got kicked out our sails last time when the beta ended. It was still fun while it lasted, though.

I finished my placement matches tonight. Bronze, as I figured. I won two of them, though, so that's something.

This sounds amazing, and, honestly, I registered for this site just because of Luggage's post on format/rules. I'm ready to throw down with what looks to be an outstanding community!

P.S. I don't like single elimination.
P.S.S. add me to steam group? ID: colonelpaladin

Count me in!
Gold Division atm.

Thanks. I am just helping Tkyl and we need all of you to make it work. Tkyl will provide additional information what the next steps will be at the beginning of next week (i.e. tomorrow or Tuesday I think).

Not sure how much I can do, but if you guys need help with anything, let me know, and I'll do my best to try to accomodate.
