Mortal Kombat - Katch All

I finished story mode this weekend and have been going through the tower challenges (right now at lvl 55). I played some online and it's much laggier than I expected. I had problems getting certain combos to work that I had no problem pulling off in practice mode (like Stryker's back + BP, forward + BP).

Anyone have a guess at how long the Story Mode is?

Cripes.

7+ hour story mode and a 300+ (level) challenge tower?

That's lunacy.

It's been reported at 7-8 hours, I think. But I'm sure someone who's completed it can give you a more personal answer.

EDIT: I haven't completed it, Aaron D., but I can tell you it takes you back through the first three MK tournaments. If you ever played through the first three games I think you'll get a real kick out of the presentation and being taken back to familiar plotlines and locations with the new engine.

In addition to the classic Ladder-style arcade mode.

Tried it out on Saturday. I enjoyed playing as Cage and Scorpion. Raiden wasn't terrible, but not as easy as I remember.

Truth. I'm at

Spoiler:

Shao Khan

and I hate both equally.

I can fix this for you

Spoiler:

Get as far away as possible and chuck low fireballs until he falls over dead. Why low? Liu ducks under the spear. Game that thing! Also, you'll have to beat him with Raiden too. This is harder but use my proven technique. Also, the Raiden's teleport followed by the superman or an uppercut takes Shao apart. Stick with lightning at range, though.

I was pretty angry at Shao khan when I got to him in story mode, it was a brutal fight, but he's actually pretty easy to deal with once you understand his patterns. Always stay out of striking distance of his hammer, and then when he throws the hammer/spear at you, jump in for a punch ->Kombo->flying kick. Keep your distance while he gets up, and repeat. I have much more trouble with Shang Tsung now than I do with Khan.

I'm going to go pick this up on 360 this afternoon if people want to do some online tonight with a complete noob.

I had a busy weekend, and didn't get to play at all. It's too bad, too, because I had a buddy over and we could have had some awesome couch co-op matches.

I think the Shao Khan and/or Goro battles have more to do with them just being badly balanced (intentionally) boss characters than Liu Kang being no good.

Spoiler:

I was able to cheese Goro with Flying Kick, but Shao Khan actually taught me a lot about how Liu Kang works. He's got a number of combos that juggle, and if you can back Shao Khan into the corner, you can go to town on him for 20+% per combo (and that's for the easy ones). Notably helpful was FP, FP, B + RP, which ends with a punch that juggles. If you're mid-screen, you can follow it with anything that moves forward, if you're in the corner you can go to town on him.

Aaron: If it helps, Story Mode is 16 chapters, at 4 battles per chapter, but some of the battles are pretty challenging (boss fights, 1v2 fights). I'm almost finished with it, and I think it's taken me about 5 hours so far.

I cannot describe how impressed I am by this game. It's way better than MvC 3 in my opinion. I haven't had these feelings of "gotta play more" since Tekken Tag Tournament, and I really, really want to spend some serious time learning how each character works. So far, from Story Mode, my favorites are Kabal, Smoke, and Jade. Jade's X-Ray move is particularly cringe inducing, and I've always been a fan of the Bo Staff.

If I see anybody on tonight, I'll join for some online matches.

What do you think of the online play, Ahrez? Despite everyone's raving about story mode I just can't see myself playing any fighting game for the story. Come to think of it, I don't think I play any game for the story.

I haven't touched the online yet. I figure it can't be any worse than Soul Calibur 4 online, and word is that NRS is working on a lag patch. I'll post with my experience after I get some online matches in tonight.

If you're playing games for their stories, you're doing it wrong.

I love this game. Busted through the story with a round robin game play with my brothers and a friend. Gonna try some online play tonight!

Well...there's something for everyone out there, so lets agree to completely disagree.

Apparently someone has never played Bad Dudes.

...er, Planescape: Torment, yeah...that's what I meant.

I'm up for some online tonight. Add me and if you see me online, send a message or invite.

Finished story mode. Is it bad that even though it's cheesy as hell I was super into it by the end?

Spoiler:

Noob=MK 1 Sub Zero brought back from the grave??!?!?!

Goddamn

Spoiler:

Raiden vs Shao Khan was a Female Doggo.

I don't know, it's possible I might not make it on at all. If I do I'll join whoever is online, but don't wait around for me.

So, is there any way to pause the story mode without losing a match?

I love that it's so seamlessly integrated between fights, but that also kept me playing a couple more fights than I wanted to (although that may be what the developers want).

You can pause during the matches, but if you mean "stop and then resume later", no. You just quit at any time, and the game will automatically resume after the last fight that you won. This can be annoying at times, if said fight is immediately followed by a rather long scene, but none of them are terribly long.

I give that answer a 4.

Quick question. Has anyone tried playing MK on either platform with the Left Stick (standard pad) instead of the D-Pad?

Can anyone comment on the viability of that route?

That way lies madness
