Mortal Kombat - Katch All

you can freely customize your button maps instead choosing presets. Radical!

I'm confused, was this a surprise? Every current fighter allows fully customized button inputs, in addition to preset options for most arcade stick/pad layouts.

I have never played a fighting game for any reason other than to play against people or to practice at home to get better at playing against people. The story mode is merely a diversion so I don't really care about story mode. It is nice that they have a good story mode, though.

I feel that MvC 3 was a waste of money for me since there's no good way to play against a bunch of friends online. Consequently, I have put almost no time into the game. In fact, my 7 year old son has played it significantly more than I have despite his being addicted to Lego Star Wars 3. Actually, I've played more LSW3 than MvC 3.

+1, just like I said earlier. I'm enjoying MvC 3 more now that I can play after hours with co-workers locally, but it's gotten less play from me than even Super SF2 HD Remix, and isn't even in the ballpark of Super SF4. So very, very disappointing.

Yea MvC3 was a complete bust for me as well and I was *so* jazzed for it too.

Any idea what the 40 mb v1.1 update is all about? Was there one on 360, or is this more PS3 shenanigans?

According to the Bombcast I just listened to, two infinites were taken care of.

Yea there was a 360 patch.

I got this out of the ol' Redbox today.

I had no idea it was so awesome. I've kinda sworn against buying fighting games because they inevitably lead to me venturing online and being frustrated by what could be seen as cheap play by others or a vast inadequacy on my own part. Still, this has me tempted. Can't get enough of the story. Few games could keep me from tearing into Portal 2.

I picked this up on the way into work yesterday on a whim as I was in the store to purchase the SOCOM 4 Move bundle. I'm not much of a console gamer and have never played a fighting game unless you count Karate Champ in the arcades back in '85, they just seemed like the barrier to entry was to high. The story mode comments on GiantBomb pretty much planted the seeds for my impulse buy, thanks Bombcast guys. I jumped into the training mode this morning and quickly hit a wall. When I got to the X, A, Y combo there was no way I was fast enough to pull it off until I actually used my right thumb to roll across X and A and my left index finger to hit Y. Is this just a problem of my thumb being too slow to hit the 3 buttons in a timely manner or something else I'm missing?
I went ahead and bought the Tekken 6 fightstick bundle today thinking if I could use three or four fingers on my right hand I could pull these combo's off.

I finally reached a real fight in the training and every time I have the guy down to a sliver of health even though I have a lot of my own left he somehow pulls off a one hit instant kill, what's up with that, it hasn't happened once in the 3 story mode fights I've button mashed my way through.

Look in the lower right corner of that match. You have to do all of those things as well as winning the fight. I lost once doing it as well.

Yeah that tripped me up the first few times I played. You need to fulfill all the requirements in addition to winning the fight.

What characters are people warming up to the most? I've gravitated towards Kung Lao, Ermac and Kabal. Noob is cool but seems like I'd need more skill to really make use of his wacky specials.

I'm clicking with Reptile more then anyone thus far, but I've not spent much time with the roster outside of story mode.

I'm only up to Liu Kang in Story Mode, but my favorites so far are Sonya and Johnny Cage. I guess I like fast characters. I hate Liu Kang. I'm stuck on his damn duo fight. I suppose I'll have to turn Story down to Beginner tomorrow to pass that.

Oh, and only expect updates for additional content. Apparently the update system they were tauting pre-launch allows them to change the mechanics without Sony and MS's certification process. It's likely what's happening during the "Checking for online updates" message at the start of the game. Pretty cool.

Stick to your guns and abuse bicycle kick. It's how I got through the last three Liu Kang fights. That duo one did take probably five tries.

The update thing sounds like what they did in CoD:MW1 for playlist changes. Not sure if they still use that in CoD games.

This game is great! Is anyone else playing multiplayer? It's very fun and I am not doing nearly as bad as I thought I would. We need to do some GWJ King of the Hill

Oooh, I just took Reptile for a spin in practice mode and he is pretty solid. Nice diversity of specials.

Slogged through the standard Ladder tournament with Kabal, cheesing through the Kintaro and Shao Kahn fights by spamming projectiles. Err, probably not a big fan of Kabal anymore. Nice pick up n' play move set and cool outfit though

So, my 360 seems to have died this morning, and the game is supposed to arrive later today. I might just go grab a PS3 copy at the store, and return the 360 copy to Amazon at this point. Of course, I could always just buy a new 360, but I'm not sure I want to do that.

Edit: Nothing to see here.

I'm just an idiot. Anyone know that your 360 won't work if it's not plugged in?

Doh!

LOLs, nice work.

MERCY

Now look out ... it's just setting you up for an Animality.

Just ordered the 360 version. I look forward to killing you all.

Along the same lines as the Jace Hall video, though not a rap, I post this video:

FATALITY (Mortal Kombat Love Song)

I'd love to add you guys but I can't get into PSN at the moment. Add me if you've got a second... Warriorpoet897.

Most of my MK skills have not translated at all to this new game, but I love it anyhow. Some of the fatalities are laugh out loud hilarious. Story mode is shockingly entertaining. I never would have guessed.

This week's Giant Bombcast does a fantastic job of selling the story mode in MK.

I'm not even into fighters (a. I suck at them, b. Not into online gaming) and it made me want to buy the game.

Apparently there's a PSN outage: http://kotaku.com/#!5794440/sony-pla...

I'm erm... between modems at the moment. Hopefully the stars align and I'm able to log on this weekend.

That's totally me in any previous fighter.

Bummer, thought about checking out the online today.

Got past the Liu Kang duo fight...on beginner. I don't feel too bad about it. I just couldn't get use to the "feel" of him, and the fight itself was definitely challenging. I'm now up to Smoke's duo fight. I don't love him, but I think I'll make it work on Normal (my default).

How to select a character's alternate costume from the selection screen? I'm totally missing something obvious here. Or is the alt look just for browsing in the Nekropolis?

Select your character with Start and you'll get to pick your costume. If you then select with start again you'll get their P2 colour as well.

On a completely unrelated note, the network code in this game is among the worst I've ever seen. My laggiest match in SF4 was better then the best matches I've had in this. So depressing.

This is disappointing to read. I'm surprised that it hasn't come up in any of the reviews I've watched/read. Giant Bomb didn't mention it, nor did GameTrailers. Eurogamer did mention it, but he also said that he was playing against US players, and I've never had a non-laggy game going across the Atlantic, so I don't think that's anything to judge by.

Are you playing in full rooms? Super SF4 could get pretty bad if you had more than about 4 or 5 people in a single lobby.

is there a thread or somewhere i can add my GT too for 360 GWJ fights?

I'm not great but am really liking this game so far,
