Mortal Kombat - Katch All

Is it weird that I could tell you character relationships for a fighting game?

No, but it's weird when the game in question is MK. =)

The MK story always did make slightly more sense than most fighting games. And the movies stayed fairly close, IIRC.

I played a lot of MK 2 in the arcade as a kid, and I wasn't really aware that there was a story.

Any pics we could see on that full roster?

Yes. I'm just putting up the link for spoiler reasons.

No, I'm not sure who would regard the roster as a spoiler.

I would buy it just for that.

The same people who warn you that their post might contain "gun spoilers" because they mention an auto-shotgun you get in the second act. I continue to be amazed by gaming's obsession with spoilers.

But just for the sensitive types:

Spoiler:

Sub-Zero is a robot now? What the hell?

Interesting roster.

It has been confirmed that DLC characters will be Kenshi and Scarlet.

Anyone know if Rain's gonna be in this at some point?

!!!!!

I didn't see that! good catch. Um, not to my knowledge, no. I think what happened is the picture is their placeholder for DLC characters in the corner but Sub Zero was the last person they were on (or vice-versa).

Not a robot (and he's in the demo).

I'm willing to bet he's going to be DLC, yeah. I think the team talked about it and raised him specifically as a DLC example.

I really can't wait for this to release. My bro downloaded the demo, and we had a blast with only those 4 characters and limited move sets (I'm assuming the full game will have more moves?).

It's funny how we evolve together with the evolution of the fighting genre. I remember I started as a HUGE Street Fighter fan, and now for the life of me you can't bring me near one of those epilepsy-inducing games. I transitioned well into MK, MK2 and even MK3 for a bit, but after that I never picked up a new one. Then there was Killer Instinct and KI2 which I loved and can't believe a new isn't being developed. Then there was Tekken and once there, I never moved on. Have played and loved each installment, love the ridiculous amount of moves each character has, how it flows, everything. But now, this MK iteration might bring me away from the Tekken world.

Spoiler:

Cyber Sub-Zero is in the game. You unlock him in story mode. In the original mythos, Smoke was caught and turned into a cyborg. In this revisionist version, smoke escapes and Sub-Zero gets turned into the cyborg. Interesting, to say the least.

Story spoilers.

Are they releasing this for PC at all?

Doesn't look like it.

Mortal Kombat: Songs can be streamed via AOL Music. It should be noted that these are all electronica.

It's half and half in terms of quality. I think the best is Liu Kang's Theme by Congorock. It's a great track that I think incorporates an MK tone and what I might expect an official Liu Kang theme to sound like. My favorite song is Reptile's Theme by Skrillex. Goro's Theme is another quality track.

I'd personally stay away from Helado and the last three.

So, found out today that MK is not coming out for the pc. Such a let down. MK is officially dead to me now

Well bah I say.

A look at the King of the Hill/Lobby System for the game.

Looks like a cooler version of what DOA4 attempted.

Cool stuff. Gives the observer something to do, which I find nice.

Anyone think Portal 2's release might hurt this? Or rephrased, anyone think Portal 2's "possibly earlier" release might hurt this? They were both scheduled for Apr 19, so I don't know. I incredibly ecstatic for both.

Absolutely not. Besides being total opposites in near every way, those are the two biggest releases this month. MK is also the last release of this big wave of fighting games we've been getting. I don't know about forums, but I'd be honestly shocked if they aren't neck and neck in NPD, with an edge to MK (no Steam).

I have no desire to pay full price for portal. The lobby looks pretty neat on MK so I may grab it. Need to decide soon though since I'd like to preorder from amazon to get the $10 discount on future purchases.

I agree. Polar opposites here, though I'm inclined to say, that you may be favoring MK because your name is Cyrax. Would we be singing a different tune if your name was Adorable Auto Turret? or Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device? Huh? HUH?!

I'm getting both but I'm far more excited about MK then Portal 2.

I'm in Mexico, so maybe release dates vary, but, yesterday (Sunday 17th) I was at Blockbuster, and they had the game for rent, both 360 and ps3. I asked when they would have it for sale, they told me they were getting it tomorrow (today, Monday 18th). Anyone else seen this?

If you're the type that just wants to see video game guys kill each other in gruesome and often-hilarious ways, MK has plenty of that. If you're interested in an approachable, well-designed fighting game that offers a variety of wild moves that are easy to execute but are tougher to work into timing-based combos, you're totally covered. And if you care about the lore of Mortal Kombat--bear with me here, I know how weird it is to talk about the story in a fighting game as a strong point--this game takes you through the early parts of the MK story, before it got too crazy and littered with more characters and realms than you could shake a loose spinal cord at. With its shockingly terrific solo components and a multiplayer offering that gives you plenty of options, Mortal Kombat might just be the most complete fighting game ever released. Oh, and yeah, it's a lot of fun to play, too.

5/5

I know Jeff is more than a little biased towards the franchise but I am shocked he's giving out a 5/5. This review may have sold me on it in release week instead of me waiting for a significant sale =)

Damn you, you filthy enabling penguin.

Edit: hahaha didn't see your tag until after I left my post. So appropriate.

Truth =)

Also 4 player 2v2 tag? Awesome
8 player online lobbies? Awesome

What version are most people getting?

I'm getting XBox.

seconded. Here's my situation:

>>I believe most of the moves are classic "tap, tap" MK, which -- in my head -- seems like it would lend itself to the PS3 controller with its segmented d-pad. However, for the Box I have a more-than-decent SFIV six-button controller that has a Genesis-style d-pad and the "new" Xbox controller with the raised d-pad.

>>Of course, there's also always Xbox Live -- my preferred service -- and the Xbox cheevos, which I can't deny loving. I doubt I'll be playing online much but those cheevos... oh, those sweet, sweet cheevos.

>>Aaaaaand there's

Spoiler:

a potentially system-exclusive character

Has anyone had a chance to test out both versions? Reviews are woefully scant on cross-platform information, which is incredibly lame.

I don't fire up my PS3 much so I never did check out the demo. From what I've seen of the game though I know that I want it. MK2 and 3 were like children to me.

Always nice to hear the game you pre-ordered turned out great.

360 or PS3?

Fill it out!

PS3 here.
