die2nite: Work together or the zombies will eat us!

Now, is there somewhere you need to go to set your timezone? It was 3 PM when I jumped in and the timestamp next to my actions was saying it was 20:00.

The clock is set to the developer's time zone. Make sure you're in town by 5 PM (EST). New day starts at 6 PM (EST).

This game needs better tutorials, but I guess player experience is part of the survival equation. I'm already looking forward to playing my next game with people who can *count* properly.

Here is a helpful guide that someone in my town posted, might be of use.

You search by going to the Town Gates, leaving the town, going somewhere, and clicking the Search button.

One important aspect of searching is "auto-search." This means that if you search for something, and wait several hours, you will search again - once every two hours. This is astoundingly useful. Consider the following: Bob heads out one square, searches, goes to sleep, comes back 10 hours later, grabs his loot, and returns to the city. Adam heads out 6 tiles, searching all of them, then comes back. Each of these people will get 6 searches. However, Adam will spend 12 AP, while Bob will only spend 2. Auto-searching is basically free stuff, how can you turn that down?

Another important aspect is resource depletion. After searching a zone several times, all the good stuff will be gone. There will be a little notification above the search bar saying that the zone is depleted. If this happens, you should click the pull-down menu below your inventory, and mark the zone as "Depleted." On the left, there is a map. If you click the "Map" button, and then the "Mark" checkbox, you will see a map with various markers. If there is a little picture of some yellow bits and pieces on a square, that means that someone marked that zone as depleted. That zone will not yield a lot of valuable loot; it is better to go to an undepleted zone and auto-search there.

I am fairly certain that scavenging is the same or similar everywhere. For example, if you walk 6 squares out, you will probably get similar loot to if you just walked two squares out (unless all the nearby squares are depleted). Also, you will probably get attacked by zombies. You will be too far out for it to be worth reaching you and you will be likely to be eaten by a gr- er, zombie. It is more efficient to go to the closest undepleted square and search that.

Finally, if you are in a zone, and there are more than twice as many zombies as people in that zone, you will not be able to leave or search. Thus, when venturing into zombie territory, if you bring a friend to search with you, you are less likely to be stranded and eaten. In general, planning ahead makes you less likely to die - for example, counting how many APs you have and planning your journey accordingly instead of charging into the wilderness and dying in the night 12 squares out.

I would love a key, I didn't like the MMO games as much, but I think that something like this that could be only goodjers sounds really cool.

As long as Prozac isn't allowed to have fire.

On my first day I have used my daily water ration and a plastic bag to waterbomb and kill 3 zombies, and used matches I found and a rotting log I took from the bank to make a torch to help defend my home (and got one complaint for selfish play)

I'm in The region of weary travellers if any Goodjers end up in there.

I'd love to see a Goodjer server for this, that'd be great.

Bookmarked for zombie goodness.

I now have 3 keys, PM me for a hook up.

PM sent, also, waterbomb? Was that a joke, or a gameplay element I really don't understand?

zombies are hurt by water apparently

Mechaslinky....it looks grim for you. As the zombie horde approaches you appear to be out in the middle of nowhere stranded far from the gates, immobile with exhaustion. The gates are locked and hope has abandoned us. I can only pray that you succumb to your exhaustion before your innards are violently torn asunder as if you opted out of a full body scan at the airport.

Looks cool, I'd like to give it a try, I liked Neptunes Pride, but Zombies are always better.

I'm at "The Sheltered Hotel." Still figuring things out, but even on day 1 there's a bunch of drama already building. Seems like this'll be a lot of fun! I've got one key left, PM if you'd like it!

Edit: Kraint got my remaining key.

I have 3 keys. PM me if you want one.

(must be at least "intern" status)

Update: 2 left

I have to admit this dropped my interest for the game by a point (there are still lots of points though, no worries). Is this about zombies or the Signs aliens?

Perhaps they are zombie witches?

If you think water is bad I just used a live chicken to kill a zombie.

Did you use a bow to fire it into the zombie like an arrow? I could totally see that as being a valid attack if that is the case.

I've still got some keys if needed.

Also the mythos behind the game is everyone is in a desert wasteland and the zombies are very dried out almost mummies, and hitting them with water will stop the "reaction" that makes them undead and just back to dead again. Basically they become soppy goop.

The in game mechanic of why is that if you use your water ration (you only get 1 a day for 6ap) is the trade off do you want to take extra actions or guarantee a dead zombie.

Can you... can you use your pee to kill them?

That betakeygiveaway site seems all kinds of shady. If anyone has a key that doesn't require me to hand out my name and shipping address to some scam site, I'd be interested!

edit: Key received, thanks!

sure... but that will dehydrate you to the point where you could be easily infected.... oh you mean practically speaking in game? No there is no option to do that.

Just noticed that staying in a zone will auto-search the zone (which doesn't use action points). Also, if there are at least 1/2 as many humans as zombies you aren't in any danger. These two things clarify a lot to me; namely, how to search without just wasting a ton of AP and why you want to go out in groups rather than on your own.

Thanks to Prozac for the key. Right now I am in the Fierce Trench of Maniacs. There only seem to be three of us in the town so far, hope we get reinforcements soon.

How many AP does drinking water give you?

I'd like a key as well, if any are left--this looks great!

Edit: Thanks, Itsatrap!

Day 2 in my first town in Die2nite and things are grim.

We couldn't get the workshop built because someone got started on the watchtower and others finished building it, using up important twisted planks.

Add to that someone opening up the town gates with an hour to go before the attack....only 19 survivors as a result.

Myself, I'm wounded, infected and terrorized so I can't go near other zombies outside and would most likely turn come day 3. No meds in the town bank to cure the infection.

I spend all my AP and one water ration (stole another from the tent of one of the dead from the attack), to carry out or destroy the infected corpses from last night's attack. Saved 1 AP so that I could go stand outside and wait for the end.

Awesome game so far!

Sounds interesting. I wouldn't mind a key if anyone has one available!!

Saddest part was that I had plenty of AP. I just thought I had a lot more time so I was out gathering things for the town. Then I realized I didn't, but the gate was closed and nobody would let me back in.

If I have keys available for people, how would I go about finding them? Something somewhere told me that some people may have 3 beta keys to give away.

This beta spreads like a zombie epidemic.

EDIT: There's an interesting little power-struggle drama playing out in my current town. Basically, one guy who has been playing for a while is laying down some ground rules for the rest of us, many of which are inexperienced such as myself. Others are quite unhappy with his attitude and feel like he is trying to boss everyone around. He's a bit abrasive and perhaps should be more open to discussion without getting upset, but I don't think he's been unreasonable or even rude. It's kind of funny, watching the same thing that always seems to happen in zombie movies play out in this game with a bunch of real people.

An auspicious start for me. I gathered my water ration and went out to see if I could find a board or something. I seem to be short on eyes following a fellow explorer abandoning me to a pack of zombies whilst I was both unarmed and afk. In retrospect, I should have listened to the warning pop-up when I elected to escape from the zone.

Edit:
Ate my discarded bubblegum and I'm now standing next to Yonder, staring at the same patch of dirt.

I wish I had Goodjer's in my server, it'd be more fun. We survived our first night perfectly. 25 zombies 25 defence, So If I hadn't taken an item from the bank, made a defensive item for my house and used it Zombies would have got in... but I still got a selfish play compliant. GRRR

Water and, I think, food will restore your AP to full as far as I've tried. Except for when you're wounded, then it restores to whatever your current maximum is.

There are some defensive items that only give the defense points when kept in the town bank. Perhaps they thought that flaming torch was one of them. It seems that while increasing the defense of your house does help with the overall town defense, most people think it's selfish and would rather the focus be on town defense items and building town buildings.

Wow, my first day, and I already have three beta keys to give away. If anyone wants one, PM me.

Well the issue is that upping home defense early comes at the cost of needed upgrades. My town is now mostly out of planks to make a workshop with. The workshop lets you turn rotting logs to planks (and maybe some other stuff as well) so it is really necessary. Right now there are a bunch of logs in our bank that we can't use without a workshop but we can't save enough wood for a workshop because people keep using it to upgrade to hovel.

Someone made a watchtower instead of a workshop and I think that is what is our undoing. I'm getting the feeling that the reinforced walls and the workshop are the two day one construction projects that MUST be done.

I tried to open the gate for you MechaSlinky but I was out of AP and you need one AP to open and one AP to close it. :/

Just got some beta keys to hand out. First 3 PMs get them.

yay I'm with a Goodjer! I wouldn't have eaten that gum if I were you... So I have until midnight server time to get back home right? Which is 6PM EST? How long after midnight is it safe to go outside again? (For certain values of safe anyways)
