*Release* Rift Catch-All - if it isnt for any of the other threads - it goes here

Also, to save this double post, I agreed with the previous statement, while it is a PvE server you're going to have jerks. Its the internet and no amount of fixing can keep jerks from ruining things. I usually use the point and laugh emotes when i run into them.

I know Trashi likes to kill other players and I'll gladly stab someone in the face that is ruining anyone's fun

(in game of course )

Lt. Warhound, I think that with the GWJers, you'll have plenty of people here that would be willing to go and help out, even if no one else answered the call.

Hell, you know, I don't even mind dying to that chump so long as you can get done what you need done in the meantime while he swats me like a fly. I can be creative about this too!

I'll go ahead and tell y'all since I know some of you were curious if there was going to be much in the way of updates between patch and release, and folks elsewhere are already posting all the full patch notes now as soon as they do an update - which most of us are highly incested about, but hey, it's live in 2 days.

Patch tonight was 820 Mb and some change. Big boy, so rest assured Trion is busting their humps hard right up 'till the wire.

Me. I didn't do much, seeing as we have a big international cultural-diversity luncheon tomorrow for work, and I've been in the kitchen all night making my secret haggis recipe.

Maybe next time they'll be careful what they ask for from a Scotsman. I guess you could say, I really put my heart into it...

We were joking around at work -- you never see any Scottish restaurants ... I'd reckon there's a reason for that

I'll post a bit more details of my culinary adventure, and maybe some pictures, in the anything goes section.

Oh well, more gaming tomorrow.

The situation LtWarhound describes: seen countless times and in all MMOs, especially in Aion, one of the major influences for Rift mechanics-wise. That's the nature of multiple faction MMOs, most of the "cool stories" to be told by MuMORPuGgers are those of griefing or somehow "schooling" someone/the opposing faction.

The response described by alexicacon et al.: haven't seen this since DAOC. As stated, the high level help will leave before long, because if their 4 guys are keeping 1 guy from the other side in check, the other side is winning, since more of "them" are progressing, while "we" are "wasting time". Might be different with a 100 people guild, but I don't think that's the number you will be looking at during the first month after release.

The best solution to prevent this imo was implemented with the chicken system in Warhammer Online btw.

I spent a significant amount of time in the last several betas and never experienced any griefing. I am sure it was there, but never saw it. I went on the world tour with Alexi and was the one who got blammo'd by the lvl 52. We talked to our Guardian brethren, danced in their city square, ogled the cool rhino/anteater looking mount and swam home. This was a PvE server so YMMV.

I've been playing since beta 3 and I've seen a few instances of griefing, most from defiants while playing on the guardian side, oddly enough. All were polite enough to get themselves killed within minutes of flagging themselves. There was even one instance where a griefer tried to wade in and gank people while we were fighting a "boss" invasion just outside the gates of a city (forgot the name of it- the one with the elemental college), and the griefer died so quickly that most of the players didn't even know he was there, judging from the amount of "why the he'll am I flagged" comments in chat afterward.

I think once folks play a little and learn all the settings, most instances of briefing will end. Probably most of the griefers don't realize folks can disable it either.

So is this the final catch all thread people will use?

Also can someone point me to the proper forum or website that talks about mage builds?

I'm probably going mage if i play and my first thought is fire/warlock/(cant remember the name) he makes squirells.

Enjoy the hell out of fighting griefers.

I tried the game again during the open beta and its been very cleaned up and makes me consider picking it up, but i'm more pvp oriented and may go that route instead.

I've played MMOs forever of all types... I have to say that LTs worries are valid worries and shouldn't be just waved away like its no big deal. Griefing is an attempt to disrupt others play. Saying just move on or wait a bit isnt a proper response. It will happen repeatedly until the devs do something or create some kind of penalty to stop it.

At the same time it wont be that big of an issue at the start of the game because no one will be that high enough lvl to do this paticular type of grief.

I must say running around battling the Goon squad griefers was one of the highlights of AoC. It was great fun, great banter and occasionally we even stomped them!

Getting ganked sucks but it's not a game killer usually. As long as there are mechanisms in place to deal with the griefers it shouldn't become too much of a problem.

Dominator. And dominator/warlock/(anything-else) rocks.

Are you in the alpha Ran, and have access to the internal boards?

PVP participation is completely voluntary, so I still see griefing as a very low impact issue within rift on pve servers.

Regarding the quest NPCs, I understand Warhound's angst, but at higher levels you're not popping quest completions every 60 seconds or faster, and the turn in guys are not always clamped together, so it's much less of an issue for the quest guys. There are also progressively more and more things to do in addition to raw quest grinding.

For tricking/forcing someone into flagging themselves for PVP, that whole issue is fixed by one checkbox in game options, so I see it as essentially a non issue. Especially once the game is released and folks start learning the controls and settings.

Yea i was in alpha so i'm sure i do.

I just havent gone looking yet. I'm sure once i do it may be enough to get me to pull the trigger.

My beta main was warlock/elementalist/dominator spec, for about 25 levels. I think the point distribution was 5/10/15 or something like that. I picked a different role and speced pyro/elementalist/chloro because the dominator/warlock was just way too slow and complicated to play. And whenever I fumbled with my 30 keys even for a second, I died. Adding pyro for damage, chloro for self- and pet-heals, and elementalist for pet made the class a bit more gifted in DPS and survivability areas. But even that became moot once I rolled the cleric.

As a last class of the beta that I had a chance to play, I really dig the cleric. Right now I'm totally in love with Justicar/Cabalist/Purifier combo. This combo gives me insta-self-heals, insta-raid-heals, spot cast heals, damage immunity shield, two wicked 3-target AoEs, several castable/insta DD spells and castable/channeled DoTs for single target spike damage, and a few auras that gives self- and group-healing based on damage inflicted. It is an absolute joy to play. I'm seriously thinking of playing this character to 50 before starting any alts (other than mules).

You could start a thread there about mages, i'm sure there are guys around who would benefit from your knowledge.

Yep. When I try to type on my Android phone, it auto corrects my typing for me, sometimes changing entire words to put in what it thinks I'm trying to type ... annoys me.

Here is our mage thread.

Also most quest hubs have defensive stones at them that you can use your asended abilites on. You can setup turrets around them and call in a squad of NPC guards that can help fend off a would be griefer by yourself. You can purches these abilites with the currency you get from closing rifts.

When i get home tonight i'll do some digging, but can you elaborate on too slow and complicated?

Reason i ask is i noticed a surge mechanic attached to spells, but dont know what benifit it has or what it does.

I've played up to lvl 14 with a mage and it seemed to be on the verge of OP because of the burst dmg available along with life drains. Now with the new changes and having the 3rd soul available early now gives you extra CC which is a bonus. So that was my thinking on the matter, but didnt know how things played out.

So this thread seams to be the RIFT catch all so I will post this here. Let me know if I should move it.

Does anyone know what the client update process will be like going form beta to retail? Will we need to download fresh or will it just be a patch/update? The couple times I have tried authenticating the client the last night just resulted in a "try again" error. Let me know if you guys have heard anything.

Beta is currently down. Indefinitely most likely.

I will answer you in the Mage thread as pointed to by Arovin.

From what I read, live will probably do a different download. My steam Rift launcher seems to think the same. I'm not deleting my beta client until that is absolute though.

This is good. I plan on rolling a BD/MM and I really think I want to split up a lot of points between BD and MM. I used both souls to great effect during my limited time in beta. I'm not sure what the high point benefits are for either of course, something cool about such a new game.

Nope I will make some threads for coordination - I will Preface it with *Release* -

I will make one for -
- Guild Matters
- Rogue Discussion
- Warrior Discussion
- Mage Discussion
- Cleric Discussion
- Crafting Discussion
- Leveling Groups (Rift Chasers)
- Dungeon Groups
- Raiding Groups

Probably will do this tonight when I get home from being drug around town with my wife.

I have a sneaking suspicion that marksman isn't as impressive as it was in beta ...

Any word on when they are going to let us download the release client - a birdy told me you could through Steam, but it isnt happening for me.

No word that I'm aware of at this point. My personal theory would be tomorrow or Thursday am. There is a fast way to download published on the internal forums for anyone with access, but it's not been made public to my knowledge.

They should just let us patch the alpha/beta client... pretty please?

Looks like they are recommending a full uninstall of the beta client.
But the full retail client can be downloaded now HERE
