lol my respec fee on my rogue is like 15g a pop now.

I think mine are around there too - Level 21/28 skill points. Just re-did my points again recently and now I'm thinking of getting my 3rd role slot.

Rift is an alt-ist's dream/nightmare.

It must scale by level, not how many times you do it.

I did it for the FIRST time last night to try bard out and it cost me 16g at lvl 26.

It does indeed scale with level. I was just remarking how mine has gone up since I've increased in level since the previous time.

I anticipate people swapping specs quite a bit, so I'm happy with a fixed cost per level. Scaling by number of respecs over a period of years would be prohibitive. Money is fine for me in the game.

Regarding open world PVP, no, a couple folks running around in a zone with a flag enabled trying to find someone else with a flag enabled, then ganking or otherwise making a nuisance of themselves to other players trying to level in peace, is not open world pvp - at least not anything even remotely close or similar to what I'm describing from DAoC or warhammer. Both of which had an incredibly fun open frontier experience.

Yeah but that is the only option while playing on a pve server.

I posted this on the "video game deals" thread already but this may be relevant to everyone here. I found Rift on sale for $39.99 and was thinking about getting it. From what i've read here and what i've seen on metacritic, the game seems to be really good.

The game is pretty bad for the first 5 or 6 levels, which is unfortunate. The main problem is the lack of rifts and the fact that you're forced to pick souls out of the blue and some souls are really good for soloing and others, not so much. There's little indication of what works well and what doesn't until you try them out. But then once you try them out, you're stuck with them (unless you start over). It doesn't even really come into its own until level 14, when you start unlocking souls and you have the money to buy a new role. Once you have that flexibility and the ability to play around with different specs, that's when the game truly shines. Also, doing rifts. When I was in open beta, I wasn't sold on it until level 12-14 when I was like "Yeah okay, this game has a lot of potential." as opposed to "okay, the difference between this and WoW is ____."

I somewhat agree with whoever said that there will be eventually a point where a specific set of souls will be preferred or almost mandated for any given role, but I disagree that they will be hardlocked into specific specs. The devil's in the details. Do you go for the 44 or push for the 24 in the other soul? By playing around with the soul builder on the internet, I've come up with a lot of interesting bulids that could go one way or another. And ultimately, that's what I find fun. Putting the theories on paper then going into the game and seeing it play out in practice.

Also, money is not much of an issue up to level 30 in any case. At one point, my rogue was broke from paying for mounts for all three of my alts, but after a few hours of questing she built it back up to 2 plats.

I agree wired, with the caveat of "for now". I'm optimistic that the development team listens to player feedback and may incorporate an open world RVR region down the road.

The game's just been released, so I don't have a problem with not having every single wishlist feature incorporated at release.

idk.. Maybe WH40K will bring something remarkable different gameplay wise.

I dont think i've seen anyone here or even their advertising them saying they were offering anything new. One of the things that i kept mentioning during alpha was that how the game would remind me of WoW and how it did the same thing just slightly better. When i went back to try things out in the open beta i saw they cleaned up a bunch of things that made it on par or equal to WoW. With the additions of high end (heroic) dungeons and raids it looked like the game was getting a solid foundation which looked good for its future.

I always laughed at peopel that tried to suggest that this was a WoW killer if anything it's a well done homage with a different setting.

One new thing the game does offer that tickles me to no end. AOE looting!

Right. But then you will find that one is better than the other because of X and you will post that on the internet. Then someone else will not even bother testing but will just pick the one and they will have X too. Soon after a large percentage of the population have X as their bread and butter. This makes the devs optimize boss fights for people who have X and anybody who picked some other skillset Y will suck against those bosses. Soon after raid organizers start demanding that in order to join their raid you have to have X or go home. And so the cycle continues...

Forgive me if you know about them, but I just wanted to bring your attention to Roles. You can buy alternative Roles for your characters that can be specced completely different from your original spec. It's like having a whole new character, but you keep the inventory and your character stats. They start at very cheap and get more expensive the more roles you buy. I think the max you can have is 4, but someone correct me if I'm wrong.

That is to say, if you want to respec, it may be cheaper to just buy a new Role rather than respec your first Role.

MoonDragon wrote:

Nope same price regardless. I bought a 3rd role just to double check.

Or be like me, that even with two role slots I'm constantly respec-ing both of them for around 12-15g a pop. Think I've spent 100g in total for that role slot and respecs.

Thinking of unlocking the third role slot. Wonder how much that costs....

I didnt mean to suggest that anyone had said such a thing.. but rather that was my impression going into it based on the amount of "discussion" Probably half my guild in WoW is playing Rift right now and I was more speaking on how much long tail there seems to be to me in Rift. I don't think theres enough to really move me long term since I can already see that over time much of what went into WoW development wise will be repeated in Rift since the core mechanics are basically the same.

Which is perfectly fine and could make the game very successful and popular because at this stage as others pointed out an MMOG is primarily "fun" when played with a group of friends. Theres nothing left in WoW that makes it that much better than half a dozen MMOG's on the market (both F2P and Subscription) so for me I'll just play the one that has all my friends playing.

I do feel that there is always something really enjoyable about playing an MMOG that is polished but still "new"

no doubt! The way they have their classes/soul system set up seems to extend that "new" feeling.

So i was screwing around last night with the Goons on a PvP server. We formed up a raid and headed in to the Silverwood

It was all good fun fighting back and forth until a lvl 50 guard spawned out of know where. He was destroying us repeatedly.

Then a server wide message pops up...

"Is that the best you can do against 1 guard??!"

"I wish I was getting exp from these kills"

Then our guildie who works at Trion join's us in TS from work and has the following to share.

(trionemployee) oh, indeedy. i was watching the GM do it... goons swarmed silverwood and ended up at the sanctum bridge, and a GM spawned a single guard on the bridge who was one-shotting all of them...
(trionemployee) the whole GM staff was crowded around a few workstations watching the show, popcorn and all

I have screen shots at home I will post later.

Brings a whole new dimension to PvP.

Thats pretty cool

You can save gear sets for your alternate roles as well:

/saveequip 1
/loadequp 1
/saveequip 2
/loadequip 2
etc.

dude! thats good to know!

Yep. I made macros for them on my raid-test characters.
/loadequip /saveequip

A UI button somewhere would be nice, but building macros essentially is the same thing.

just remembered there was rest xp in this game too... so if you juggle alts make sure to park them in Meridian before logging out.

ranalin wrote:

It isn't just Meridian. It works (I think) if you are near a quest hub of any kind.

I think it works in bigger towns, not sure about any hub.

For me, I just gate back to Meridian and done.

All this talk of alts has me wanting to play one of mine

I know if I logged onto my rogue though, I probably wouldn't log into anything else till my rogue was 50.

It works in area hubs. Like what is the name of the second areas main town, Granite Falls? You earn rested xp there.

Well, I broke down and got it. Great start too. I created a character, ran one intro quest and then got a message that the server was coming down in 10 minutes for 2 hours. Heh.

Yeah its the "Official" launch kicking out all those gold farmers..well...some of them at least. hopefully, maybe.. oh screw it.. you can't get rid of them!

oh a happier note, here is a list of all the dungeons and the lvls required to run them. yay!
* the lvl listed is the lvl of the mob inside, so the range to enter(and note die and still get good xp) will be roughly -2 or +2 of the range listed.
