Bulletstorm Catch-All

On Bulletstorm:

"It's the Burnout of shooters, with a little bit of Duke Nukem," says Epic Games' design director Cliff Bleszinski, "and a little bit of Firefly and Serenity on top."

Kotaku wrote:

You're awarded points for creative chain attacks - for example, shooting a foe in the balls and then putting him out of his misery with a headshot gets you a mercy-kill, worth more than just a standard headshot. The points you accrue from these attacks go to weapon upgrades, which enable even more cool attacks and, Epic hopes, an upward spiral of creative mayhem for the user.

Wowzers!

If I didn't know Bleszinski was good for it I'd be rolling my eyes so hard I'd fracture my skull right now. I'm sure he could fit puppies, ice cream and pornography into that description somehow. Or rename the game "The Best Thing Ever (No Really)." I find the "Firefly" part to be particularly cynical. Like invoking the name of Joss Whedon will suddenly get you fans.

At an event showing off the game last week in San Francisco, I also saw a little bit of Borderlands and even some hints of Madworld, and the game's main character - a coarse, unapologetically violent antihero - is familiar enough I can't immediately cite where I saw that first. "He's an asshole, a troublemaker, ladies probably love him," Bleszinski said. "It was either that or use Nolan North again."

Borderlands + Madworld sounds a little less hyperbolic and a little more interesting. The line about Nolan North is just funny.

Game looks like it could be pretty good. Just please, Cliffy B. Give us a little more credit.

I checked out the preview in Game Informer this month and I have to say the game looks very interesting. The grapics look crisp and I like the palette, the dfferent "combo" deaths look like they add some novelty to the game. I really want to see some gameplay footage.

I'm very much with whoever it was on Giant Bomb (I think?) who wondered thusly: How did it take the medium 30 years to make a game called "Bulletstorm"?

All I needed to know was that People Can Fly was doing it, and they already had my money.

Well, we were close with Bullet Witch. And Motorstorm, I guess.

I can't help but wonder whether I'll feel compelled to buy this game simply because I made the catch-all thread for it.

Just watched the trailer and interview on GT and I was really interested in the game. It does look like it could be a lot of fun. At this point I don't care about the single player, I want to do all that in multiplayer setting. That would be so cool. It's a good thing it's coming out next year because this one is filled with so many good games.

If I recall correctly the article I read stated that there would be no co-op play but multiplayer may be in the works.

Unless it has RPG elements and/or loot like Borderlands I think I'll probably just continue to play Borderlands Especially if there's no coop.

The environmental kills look just like Madworld, except you're using guns instead of fists to make them happen. That and NIN - "Wish"? Really? Man, that's an old song now. IT was funny because I noticed it immediately when it started up even though I haven't heard it in nearly 15 years.

I think you're going to be playing borderlands then. This is by People can fly, shooters don't get much more pure than games like Painkiller so I expect this to be quite lean on RPG aspects and concentrating on the shooting.

It's coming across that they're using Blezinsky to present the game because he's a known name in gaming, I'd say very few people (especially on consoles) know who PCF are, where they know Epic/CliffyB.

The IGN preview talks about some sort of upgrade system, but no details are out on it yet.

IGN wrote:

The purpose of points -- and the whole reason to not just play Bulletstorm like a typical shooter -- is to get upgrades. Not much is known about the upgrade system at this point, but they will be used for both offensive and defensive purposes on your character.

Sadly so. As much as I loved the original Painkiller on PC, they just never got much traction in the console space.

However, if I remember correctly, Cliffy is actually design director for Epic now, so he's got his fingers in all the games in Epic's kitchen. I don't know exactly how deep he is in Bulletstorm's design, but he's definitely working on it in some capacity. But yeah, it also doesn't hurt that dudes know who he is.

In. I love the look of this game.

Takes me back to the heady days of yesteryear, when Quake strode mightily across the land, and music for disaffected alienated youth was defined by rage.

Am I right in thinking that connection is deliberate? I haven't played Painkiller, but isn't it known as a fun retro throwback in its purity of focus on shooting?

They probably got "Wish" because they could finally afford licensing it, 15 years later. I heard Trent Reznor had a fire sale when shutting down NIN in order to move on with How To Destroy Angels. (Which is fine by me because his partner/lead singer is smokin'.)

Whoa, I did not know about this.

Lame name for a band. Sounds like something that might've risen from the ashes of Papa Roach or Blink 182.

I bet Reznor's just having his own A Perfect Circle moment.

I came to this thread to say this.

Painkiller rocked.

You won't be saying that once the angels invade and you don't know how to fight them.

Sorry for continuing the derail, but I just looked up How to Destroy Angels. I'm not nuts about the single, but, damn, Mrs. Reznor is drop dead gorgeous.

edit:

If there is no gun that shoots shurikens and lightning I will pay for the DLC that includes a gun that shoots shurikens and lightning.

Amen, brother.

The trailer looked like more awesome and ridiculous shooter fun, just like Painkiller.

I'm already pretty much sold.

And wooden stakes that pin enemies to the wall. That's essential.

I would love a nice, shallow frantic shooter in the Quake2/Painkiller/Prey mold. I actually really want to pick up The Club when I find it at a decent price again.

The whole super serials tactical thing is played out.

The trailer for Bulletstorm looks great, there's some very Painkiller looking weapons and powers.

Oh, and the How to Destroy Angels song is boooorrrriiiinnnnnggggg...

One thing i think PCF's games have over Croteam's is that I find the Serious Sam games to be very technical in their gunplay and how the enemies come at you, and after a while it becomes tiring to play and not fun. This looks like fun.

Because angels destroy you when you blink?

Funny you should mention that, because a gun that shoots shurikens and lightning is how to destroy angels.
