2011 Team Fortress 2 Tournament, this time with ACTUAL medals!

I can be an alternate, but with the baby coming in approx six weeks I'm not at all sure what my availability will be.

I'm 100% against randomizing captains post-draft. If I were drafting, a significant factor would be how well I get along with the folks I draft. Given how important teamwork and communication are, similar play styles and communication are incredibly important to the cohesion of a team.
There were a number of folks I could have chosen for my second in command in the last tourney if I were looking at skill alone. How well I got along with my xo in-game was far more important than pure skill.
In my opinion, the point of drafting is to build a team which plays together well -- not just to smooth out talent levels as best as possible.

Geez Phish, putting some real thought into this. I figure people would just go, "XO pushes M1 and racks up the kills, I choose XO"

Gentle reminder to the folks (mostly previous captains) stridently opposed to random team distribution:

Spoiler:

Teams were entirely random last time. This would be the same, except you'd be more likely to be fighting against teams with a similar roster strength.

Are Mac guys allowed?

Phish makes an excellent point. Why did you schedule your baby in the middle of the tournament? Somebody needs to get their priorities straight. On a side note, you are good for my TF2 game. I get tunnel-vision easily which leads to my death. You are very good at knowing when to pull your head back in and I am trying to listen to you more.

Thanks Minarchist, don't know if I could take it in good conscience. I am not a great communicator in-game which I think is a key to the role. We'll see how this shapes up though.

Going the highlander route seems intriguing, any interest there?

Nope. The highlander server experiment ended that idea a while back. It's just not that fun.

Asterith, we played one game a week. The time varied depending on the schedules of the players involved. Usually were in the range of 9-11pm EST. Some teams practiced as well during the week.

Yeah this is important. And maybe as early as 8pm eastern. But we had some people sign up last time that were on other continents and just couldn't make the times and then had to drop. Some of our overseas friends have odd schedules and can play at US primetime, but if you can't it might be best to sit out. Or maybe put yourself down as an alternate fill-in if you can only make it on the weekend or something.

I could probably still handle the in-game stuff, I just don't have time to beat people over the head to respond to practices, commit to matches, etc.

I'll play. I would like captains to pick teams so I can find someone to blame for everything and feel justified. >:)

In, please for any team needing an average Sniper.

My home PC bit the dust Tuesday night but the new (much better) rig is on order and should arrive by the 20th. Let's see if a modern graphics card improves my play any.

I don't see why not...

I know I haven't been around much (at all) the past six months, but I'm in. The timing of the tourney coincides nicely with the end of a hectic, insane, crunch. I'll try to get a bit of practice in before the tourney so I'm not just dead weight.

sign me up.

I'm down. Haven't played too much lately but I could hold my own as a heavy or soldier.

Count me in!

Please add me to the alternates/practice roster. However, until I can resolve my random disconnects and unlock-availability problems, I should probably avoid tournament play.

I am in, I posted two days ago and it never showed up apparently.

Re-reading the Summer Tourney thread, one of the suggestions I rather like for selection boiled down to:

* Select howevermany captains are needed
* Captains take turns drafting players to teams
* Teams are then randomly assigned to captains (so they have a vested interest in trying to create balanced teams)

I'm probably in - work has decided to explode on me (and is likely to be on fire for the next six weeks), so depending on when we're looking to start I may have to pass. :(

I am leaning heavily in favor of these ideas. Are people willing to put their name in for captaincy, or am I just going to decide? Remember people, I abuse power.

Agreed, except the person doing the drafting should just stay captain. I would also suggest making our captains our all star players (and you know who you are). That way they are broken up and not picking each other. They also know who is who in the TF2 world making the picks pretty fair. I remember one game last year where mex joined in for a single round as a stand in (8 domination's and heated discussion later, we agreed he was to much of a game changer to "sub" in.) I think have a few people like that around here. So if they were captians, every team would have a heavy hitter at least.

I also agree with the picking extra people for each team, that way we can always play a game on the night they are scheduled. If the other team shows up with less players, or we get all the people + extra's to show up, maybe they can rotate out for a round. Can we open up the server to have like 8 spectator spots so they can be "on deck". This will also help with last minute issues and connection problems should they occur.

Me personally, I think I will go quickly in the third round draft

Cheers,

Phishy makes a good point.

In.

Yeah Mex carried us to almost victory that night.

Signing up.

Sign me up please.

I'm in. And Jolly.

And it was a lot of fun n_n

I'd throw my hat for Team Captain but I don't have a mic and honestly I'd just wanna play this time around.

But with the pool of GWJers, it's impossible to have a team with at least one or two super experienced guys.

For team captains I'd suggest (if they're up to it) : Erik, Brainz, Evilhomer, evilseed, ukick, Dimmerswitch, Phish, and lately Qball is really annoying with every class >_<, they have mics, regulars on the GWJ servers and they're great guys, I'd be happy to be on any of their teams =)

edit: Oh yeah Moondragon was also captain last time around and he did great with all the organizing and stuff and he has a mic too.

I'm glad it's only taken 450 hours to become annoying with every class.

I figured not, but being a n00b on TF2 on PC/Mac I'm not well educated on the compatibility of private servers.

I'm definitely interested as this would be a tourney that would not require monopolizing the only TV in the apartment.

First up: no way is Mex not a captain.

Second: I am flattered to be listed as a candidate for captaincy, but right now I'm not even sure I'm going to be able to participate (work is beating me up, and may be like this for another six weeks). Until I have a read on how this is gonna shake out, I'm an alternate at best.

If we are going to be drafting teams, it might be helpful to get everyone's preferred classes, self-identified skill level, number of hats owned, and a link to your steam profile. I'd be happy to create a form to gather this info for people. Are there any other questions that might be useful?

Just make sure when you give the link to psych that he enters in his password too.

Macs work fine. It's all bits on the internet. I've played a few times on the private on a mbp (yay able to cash in on the engi update while away from home).

Vouching. Ukick's finally starting to rub off on you.

I'm happy to play in the tourney, and am honored to be nominated, but I really don't want to be a captain. I get enough wife aggro from doing server admin stuff as it is, I don't need *more* TF2 responsibilities.

Get it off me! Get it off me!

I'll have you know the least played class business was because I was bored with just playing demos, soldiers, and pyros a lot from before.
