Dead Island

This game had piqued my interest a long time ago, I'm cautiously optimistic about it. I'll probably wait until some first impressions from other people before I go for it.

It sounds very much like L4D2 + Borderlands as Ars describes it. I hope it there are difficulty options unlike in Borderlands which got much too easy once you are a level or two above the enemies.

Which is exactly what I am hoping for.

Agreed. This seems like it's potential. I just hope it can compete witht he competency of those two games.

I figure that if i'm buying DNF at some point then there's no reason for me to skip this

Mind you... that could be a very expensive and regrettable position to take....

Huh, what's DNF?

I think it's Duke Nukem Forever. But, but that can't be right.

Hail to the king, baby!!!

I don't quite see the connection between Duke Nukem and Dead Rising, but um... okay.

I.e. If i'd spend money on something that's as universally reviled as DNF then why not this?

It was in response to people saying that they'd wait and see despite the game looking decent.

Ars has a new article up discussing how the studio plans on making have an emotional impact rather than a humorous one. Sounds like they've got some good ideas going.

I think the reason zombie movies make such an impact is the fact that people make tough choices. Think of 28 weeks later when the guy ditches his wife. That was such an epic moral problem and a choice was made. You instantly put yourself in the situation of the character in the movie and ask yourself "Would I have made the same decision?" A game that forces you to make these types of decisions sounds fantastic! My interest in the game is now back.

I think I'd be interested in a 4-pack, if anyone's up for it. Steam has a nice pre-order bonus, too (which Gamestop is calling a "Limited Edition" OMG OMG).

It would be nice to see a little more gameplay, though. I know they can make neat trailers and I have a general idea what it is, but I haven't really gotten a feel for it yet.

As for zombie movies, those have an impact on us because they're about us. The zombies represent a part of us, sure, but the conflict usually comes from how the survivors treat each other. The violence, the selfishness, the paranoia, fear overcoming kindness, those sorts of things. They're about people at their worst.

I hate touchy feely soul searching crap.

And doctors, and lawyers, and cops...

I am interested in this for coop, but want to see some gameplay.

If anyone decides to organize a 4-pack, I'd also be interested.

Did this video get posted? There is a developer interview over the audio, and they cover a lot. Seems like Left4Dead meets Borderlands in scope.

There is also this one, though it isn't continuous, it cuts around to show things off.

Left4Dead meets Borderlands

what, with rpg character building ?

Yes, also: an open-world, main & side quests, enemy levels, and drop-in co-op play.

I would be possibly interested in four pack too. It might be good for an occasional change of pace from TF2 nights. But I hope they can serve up the touchy-feely stuff on the side.

What are the maximum number of players that are supported in this drop-in coop mode though?

@Tannhauser - you're a filthy damned enabler.

@hannibals - my touchy feely comment was a l4d joke, and a big stretch. Conceptually zombies are a deep subject. But I too Lobster waaaay out of context for a very silly joke.

I played enough L4D that I can no longer avoid making that connection whenever I see the word "hate."

I believe the max is 4 players.

I'm down for the 4-Pack as well (with my son, he's also on Steam) so that's two copies for us. If someone wants to organize, PM who I need to send virtual bucks to!

This is tingling all the appropiate tingly areas. While I groaned at the "pissed off" drunkard tourist bit at the trailer there, the E3 vid was amazing, those enviroments look incredible.

Looks like we have more than enough people for a 4-pack. Anyone want to organize this thing? I'd do it myself but my PayPal account isn't verified so I couldn't turn my balance back into real money.

The video that Tannhauser posted did a good job of raising my opinion of the game, but I still need to see more. Thankfully, because I have an Xbox now, I'll be able to demo it regardless if they fail to put one on my platform of choice.

Cyrax killed the thread.

(It's a zombie now.)

cyrax attacks with electrified machete and does 248 damage to zombie zombie thread
cyrax ends his turn

I'm really liking the look of this. I'd go in on a 4 pack as well.

Same here, if it gets organized I would like to get in on some 4 pack action myself.
