My experience flirting with Champions Online F2P raises the question: does anyone still play City of Heroes, or is it pretty much moribund at this point? I noticed that they have a Mac client now, so I'm curious to know whether it's still a thing.

I still pop on every couple months. While they've reduced the number of servers, there are definitely still people playing.
I tried it a few months ago. They had a free weekend for the Going Rogue expansion. It seemed like there were plenty of people still playing, but I imagine DCUO's launch and CO's going free to play will hurt.
Hope there's another free weekend soon. I'd like to dabble again before I consider re-subbing.
Looks like they finally made Fitness pool powers inherent the last patch, so every single one of my characters would get to use a respec and choose some new powers at this point. Might be fun.
Looks like they added a lot of stuff the last couple updates, even redesigned the character creator, alternate power animations, updated graphics, lots of long-requested things.
Well this still seems to be the most recent topic on the game, although I saw about 10 different ones using search.
Game on sale on Steam today, $9.99 for all the most recent stuff, which is cheaper than a month sub.
Also, apparently announced a few weeks ago, expected to go FtP by the end of the year.
Well, for $10, I signed up.
I am on the Infinity Server, and migh have access to a Supergroup base, depending whether or not the supergroup I used to hang with didn't wreck it.
Yeah I grabbed it too. After they also sent me an offer to return to my account for 15 days for free with a code as well.
Assuming I get the full 45 days that should be enough to scratch the itch, as well as ensure I get the Going Rogue content when F2P hits.
Pretty sure every character I have needs a respec, as it's been a while. And my character list is pretty large. Altitis is what we called it, and I had it bad.
Yup, picked it up. I played this game and loved it a long time ago. Even if I never play another hour again, I'm happy to give $10 to the developers. It's better than Age of Conan's deal, which charges free-to-play previous subscribers $15 to unlock a previous character slot. That's a single slot.
Wow. I had/have a problem. Commonly known as alt-itis.
I have 52 toons. And that's not counting several level 1s that are either name camping or were prestige dummies for friends' solo supergroups. That's actual heroes/villains above level 5 or so. Whew.
And of course the first thing I'm going to do tomorrow is create a new toon, for the new melee powerset they added.
I'm also back - lvl 50 scrapper (hero) and lvl 44 MM (was villain, now rogue).
Almost entirely solo, but as a MM you're never alone - and the tip missions give me some extra choices. Still one of the best MMOs I ever played, good light relief from the heavier stuff. I was in this from beta, and still find odd new stuff. I miss the old days of mass Lusca fights in IP, and to be honest on the server that I am on (Defiant), there are few other people around.
Just one question - how do I pay off the debts for my supergroup base ?

Pretty sure it's in Atlas Park main building, city hall or whatever. Guy at a desk just inside.

HOLY CRAP.
To be fair though, I think superhero MMOs should get a special exemption from alit-itis, since a huge chunk of those games' fun is just F'ing around in the character creator. But still. 52...damn.
Blizzarella awaits unlocking on the Champion server.
53 now.
The new Going Rogue stuff, in Praetoria, is amazing. Branching dialog, alternate story choices, branching contacts. Looks like it should be worth several run throughs before getting remotely boring. A lot different than "go to Atlas Park, go to sewers, come out at level 6 or 8" that the old game had fallen into.
Dangit! I missed it going on sale again.
I just started my free 15 days they sent me and I'm having a killer time. Want to pick up Going Rogue but I want to get it at 9.99 if I can.
Inherent Fitness Pool at level 2 is probably the best change that ever happened to this game. On my new lowbie brute I can just keep on trucking instead of the usual sit and wait for end to come back that plagues most characters until 20. Plus I can actually take powers from my prim-/second-aries. It's a welcome change and a breath of fresh air to leveling.
Respecing 51 characters is going to take a while (already did 1, and old Dark Armor brute that just sucked end like you wouldn't believe and stalled out in the teens because I felt like I would never make it to stamina). But I'm looking forward to changing around all my builds and maybe even slotting some new things.
Also while I was gone they made the global e-mail system and allow attachments now. No more bothering my sg-mates to come twink out my new alt. Just send some inf and IOs over myself.
The only thing that seems to be holding me up now is that every arc seems to be ending with an elite boss that is completely unsoloable...I don't remember that being part of the original scheme of things, and of course with server populations relatively low, finding anyone around is a real task.

Have you talked with the difficulty contacts? I forget what they are called right this second, but I saw one in Praetoria right by the initial start point. Has 4 settings now. Level (-1 to +4), # of players (1-8), boss (yes./no), AV (yes/no). So if you have no on those last 2, bosses will become LTs and AVs will become Elite Bosses (EB).
And if I read your post above right and you are playing on a 40-50 character, then yes, most story arcs have AVs at that level. Used to mean we always had to team to finish off a run to 50. But now that they've added the EB option instead of AV, that's a whole lot easier. And yes, soloable for most classes.

I'm guessing you're looking at an average number of alts for COH. Pretty sure I had almost every server filled with alts during my time. Some of them quite high.
I loved City of Heroes. Only MMO I ever played past two weeks. Never got to fifty, but that doesn't mean that I didn't spend an unfortunate amount of time in-game. I still visit the old COHguru forum from time to time. Seems like some people are still playing around in it. Not quite sure how you could do that for what, eight years now? But more power to em.
If anyone wants to be powerleveled a bit just to get past the first few levels of monotony, let me know. I've got a brute and tank on Freedom that can do it for you.
Been playing this game off and on since beta back in the day. The news coming out with the Freedom update sounds fun. And I am in between MMOs at this point so may check it out. Is their a GWJ super group brewing? Because that would rock.
Well since I'm back in for at least 40 more days, and will in all likelihood play at least a little after F2P, might as well friend some more goodjers.
Global in game is @Stele.
Anybody else currently playing feel free to friend me. I've got characters on nearly every NA server, so I can probably find a place to team with you.
My main sg/vg is on Guardian. But we have sg/vg both on Freedom, Virtue, and Triumph. Also vg on Protector. And then some other splinter groups around other servers, maybe just 3-5 members that needed more space like me. I'd hate to throw away years of base building and prestige. A lot of the base building I did myself back in 07-08 or so. Pretty sure we have some room wherever you might be though. Just talk to me in game sometime.
Looks like plenty of people playing on Freedom - logged on to server selection just now and Freedom has 3 red lights on, not seen that for a long time.
Just done enough alignment missions to convert my lvl 45 MM into a hero...now to see if any of the contacts will talk to me
Saw Freedom and Virtue red last weekend.
I think everyone is using these 15-day passes that I got. Also there was supposed to be a double xp weekend this weekend, so people may have planned ahead to play. Moved to Aug 11-14 now I think.
Due to it being so long since my account was active, and losing all info for it, i ended up buying a new digital copy of cov/h and started up the account friday. Now have a level 8 villain named Amuc, whatever the villain equivalent of a blaster is.

That would be a corruptor. Which is an inverted defender. More buffage/debuffage than a blaster and more dps than a defender. My favorite toon is a fire/dark corruptor.
Think I chose fire/fire, for the healing aspect.
If anyone joins on Defiant, my global handle is '@Doktor Weebl' (my first ever character, straight out of the beta)
And I actually saw other players today, in the 'Rogue' area. Most nights I'm bumping into the odd one or two, but as a military MM at lvl 46, I always have plenty of back up.
Have noticed that your 'pets' can become unresponsive if you move from one area to another, up to the point where you enter a mission building etc. Bit of a problem if you are having to grind 'x' number of enemies., because even dismissing your men and recalling them doesn't work.
Wait, pets stay up between zoning now? Haven't played any of my 3 MMs since I came back...
I'll friend you up even though I'm currently all on NA servers. Never know, I might run out of room eventually and have to go to a European one.
How do you know what your global handle is?
Comes up in the text window when you first log on.
