Portal 2 Catch-All

Well, I've never made a map for a game before, and I've always wanted to give it a shot. Spent pretty much all day today on a test chamber for the Verticality competition. I don't know whether I'll be able to play everyone else's maps and vote in a timely fashion, but we'll see. I will link directly to the map when the submissions start rolling in, but anyone interested can view the map via the Workshop link in the sidebar of my Steam profile (sig).

The day to have it all completed is Friday still, right? What do we think about maybe Wednesday being the first day you can post your map? I'm horrible at maps and won't be able to finish playing the maps if I only have 2+ days (plus I heard that someone invented other video games to play). Thoughts on this?

Also, as the election cycle revs up just thought I'd engage the topic of voting. Are we going to only have a you vote for one person dealio? That seems the most obvious and what most peeps will likely want. I was curious if anyone else would be interested in a voting for your top 3. It'd be easy enough to have top get 3, next get 2, and third place get 1- add the points together and see whose in first place. It's kind of how I wish actual democracy would work. That way you could acknowledge a couple you liked. Anyone got another alternative voting method?

I like everything you said, demon.

That really messes with my head, though.

Agreeing with me does typically mess with people's heads. Also, causes the growth of an additional nipple for some reason- so good luck with that.

Hey just an idea for the competition. Way back when Quake3 was still a pretty active game I got into mapping for it. On one forum we would do speed mapping every once in a while. You would get one hour to put together a multiplayer map and send it off and play a round on everybody's map.

After having played with the portal 2 editor I'm thinking it would lend itself well to this sort of event.

We could get together in vent or something, start a timer and you have until an hour after to post it to the work shop. Then spend maybe an hour or so playing everybody's maps.

demonbox: I completely agree with the top 3 tiered voting system you mentioned. Are we restricting voting to others who have made and submitted maps that particular week, or is the general public allowed to vote as well?

Norfair: I'd like that, but as a much more rare type of thing. Maybe after we get a couple weeks in of this thing.

Hell no! I'm not making a map this week, but I'm certainly judging the f*ck out of those of you that do.

Lol, yeah, voting for everyone sounds fun enough. Not everyone can make maps in the time span given.

Patch just released: http://store.steampowered.com/news/8...

Looks like quite a few fixes for the puzzle creator. Probably worth a look for you avid mappers.

How's everybody's maps coming along? I'm excited to see what everyone turns in! I think I have mine ready. I have the one I want to submit, plus another one which I did first, but didn't love that much. I might give a third one a try, but I think my heart is set on the one I chose...

I have one done, that I really like as a general level but I'm only so-so on the 'verticality' of it. The core theme that brought about its creation is verticality, but that might not be as evident to someone playing through the level.

I have a concept for another level I want to build that might be better suited to this challenge, but I'm not sure I'll have time to actually implement it.

I think I just finished my level. I've got to rebuild and play through it one more time but I think I'm complete, unless I find out I'm not.

Tried clearing my head from the Verticality a bit, and fooled around with smaller maps. I think I need to go smaller. A collection perhaps, but of smaller chambers. I'm going too big, which without/iffy-working autosave, can be frustrating...

Memories

Will give it a go tonight when I get home. I´ll try to have some feedback for ya!

My challenge map is now up: Vertically Challenged

I put a few comments in the description, and mentioned it is part of GWJ Challenge #1- not sure if that's the best way to help sort which are challenge maps or not (maybe separate collections? dunno).

I thought we were submitting maps on Friday?

Friday is due date; Wednesday is first day you're allowed to submit.

My level's picture is ugly. How do I fix this?

If we're submitting already, I'll post mine, but first, I'll put a list so we can keep track:

Afterthought:

I went with Icarus for my submission, but I do have another one. What should be the protocol on this? Wait for Verticality Competition to end? Submit anyways now, though won't count as a submission? What?

I don't know how to fully control how it'll look, but I found if you go to editor and move it like you want it positioned and then publish it'll look like you moved it. Unfortunately this wouldn't have shown you that parts of your map are cut off.

Spent some time with Hop and Icarus tonight [Spoiler: Both will kill you].

Guess I need to friend up Bill as I did not see his as an option for me. Hoping (and hopping) to spend some more time playing with maps tomorrow to see what I can get through.

Played all 4 maps published today:

Redneck:
-I liked your take on that puzzle from 2. Very fun. Had trouble figuring out how to block the lasers once I was on the lift, but finally got it. Quite good!

Demonbox, Jolly Bill, Cyranix: Reviews when submissions and voting is done! Mwahahahahaha!!

Hey folks, I don't know if this is possible but once you've all finished your levels would it be possible to bundle them into a pack/set? Or is that only possible if a single author built/submitted the levels?

I plan on putting them into their own collection for people to quickly and easily pick them up. No worries there.

Edit: And here it is so far...

Thanks, Mantid.

Ah, good. Hope this works. Thanks demonbox, I was actually posting from inside steam and I couldn't get the link or image buttons to work properly at the time.

My personal preference would be that you hold off general posting of levels until after Sunday if you can manage it, to avoid confusion. Especially if the level was made with the same theme. Not just for the sake of the submitters, but also for the sake of the judges who might not realize which levels are 'submitted' and which are not.

Maybe we should make a separate thread for these contests so as to make the distinction clearer on going? Sounds like the right path to me.
