Gamers With Jobs - Unofficial IRC Channel

Pages

I'm posting this new thread instead of bumping the original as the useful info is pretty far down, and besides, now we do have a channel.

Forgive my ignorance for things all IRC, but what about the chat room for the GWJ Steam group? Its always empty now, but it seems like it could be a pretty good ready made meeting place.

IRC is much more versatile, most important is that it can be accessed from everywhere, not just where you can run Steam. Twitter on the other hand is like the bastard child of a forum and chat, but not a straight up replacement for either.

Anyway, could be worth seeing if there's any interest. I'm no IRC fiend by any means, but over here Quakenet was always where anything gaming related was located. I'll be idling in #[email protected] and anyone is free to join.

Here's the server list (random US server: gameservers.tx.us.quakenet.org:6667) or you can use the web client by just choosing a nickname and clicking connect.

I expect it to be pretty slow at catching on, if it does, since it's likely to be prone to a moment 22 effect where people log on, see very few people on and immediately log off.

But now, we've got ~10 ~20 ~30 ~40 regular idlers! There's even conversations! We're growing!

Also, unlike USTREAM, it doesn't cap out at 100 chatters. So next time there's a live show and you can't get into the USTREAM channel, come and check us out.

Woohoo! Another network and channel to idle on! I'm there.

Summer's been keeping me busy and away from the IRC client. Now that the kids are back in school it is indeed time to return and idle!

IDLING

BTW, for people who may not be familiar with IRC: A lot of people will connect to IRC and just leave it running in the background during work and/or at home and look at it now and then to see if there's any conversations they want to participate in, or we'll just say something randomly.

You may join and see 10 people in the channel, but just because we don't say anything right away doesn't mean we're ignoring you or anything. So we all talk of idling, but we really do talk.

Sometimes.

Cool, just joined. I'll have to try to keep it hidden here at work though.

Alright, anyone know a good dedicated IRC client for OSX? I'll do some searching on my own later, but if you have any suggestions, i'm all ears.

Colloquy is usually recommended for Macs. I use it on my iPhone and find it to be a pretty nice app.

I'll bite. I just set mine up with Pidgin, which is almost permanently on. I'll idle

I run irssi on the family linux file/web server, so it stays up and connected all the time. Every so often I'll read through the backlog of stuff and talk a bit. So far, you guys aren't as chatty as my group of friends on freenode. Sometimes it takes a good 20-30 minutes to catch up there!

You should contribute more.

The 1.4 beta of Adium supports IRC. It's what I've been using.

Anybody else having trouble connecting today? I need to idle!

No issues here.

Indeed, the channel is working great for me. I even typed something.

ChatZilla is a great IRC client - it's a FireFox addon so you can have your IRC in a tab next to your GWJ tab.

Fixed.
Anyone not idling is missing a great discussion about giant robot fingers.

We need to keep posting in here, if nothing else for the irony of a thread talking about chatting in another medium coming up in the "Popular forum threads" sidebar. =)

That is a brilliant idea.

Sounds like a winner to me. Come for the chat, stay for the giant robot fingers.

At the very least, we should bump out "Idle F***'in Thumbs" since our digits are better.

It's like I'm psychic!

X-Chat Aqua is another good Mac OS X client option for anyone still thinking of joining us!

pneuman is cruising for porn, join us

I'm never going to look at my old NES lightgun the same.

Is that what you call it now?

I'll set it up once I get home tonight. Much merriment will ensue.

FYI, I wrote an irssi script that captures all URLs I see in IRC, and posts them to del.icio.us, so if you want to see what folks are linking in irc (some NSFW), you can go to:

=)

I've got a bad feeling about this.

At least they're not all boobiepie links.
